ALU’s Favorite Fashion’s Night Out 2011 Events

Tonight is Vogue’s 3rd annual Fashion’s Night Out event. A night to help promote the fashion industry that has grown to become a worldwide celebration. Stores all across the country and the world will be open late tonight, many of them offering special deals, gift bags or complimentary services while you shop.

Of course the craziest place to be on FNO is New York City. Last year was my first time being out for FNO and to say it was a madhouse would be an understatement. One major lesson I learned… if a major celebrity or reality star is involved STAY AWAY. Unless you are sleeping on the sidewalk waiting to be the first ones in the door, you’re never getting near them.

That’s why this year I am focusing on the events outside of the major department stores or featuring big names. I’d rather enjoy the fun things like discounts, manicures, goodie bags and hair styling. I’ve compiled my list of 19 fun FNO destinations for all my NYC peeps. Enjoy!

ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – “French Twist” Manicure with Zoya Caitlin & Dove

zoya-caitlin-dove-nail-polish-intimate-collection-spring-2011 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.

Today I’m recreating a look straight from the NYFW runways. Over the past few years Zoya has become quite a presence at Fashion Week and during the Fall 2011 shows they came up with a look they’re calling the “French Twist.”

Using two polishes from the Spring 2011 Intimate Collection, I tested my freehand skills polishing a French tip.  Keep reading to see how it turned out.

CND at New York Fashion Week – Day 4 Giveaway

Sunday was Day 4 of Fashion Week and I was off and running at the crack covering a show at 8am.  I’m so not a morning person but for nails, I make it happen.  On this day CND worked with two talented female designers, Malandrino and Behnaz Sarafpour .  While I wasn’t able to see the Malandrino show, based on the tweets from my fave fashion bloggers, every piece was covet worthy.

New York urbanites and Parisians alike will delight in today’s CND manicures which honor the sophisticated, jet-setting woman

From a pale, purple tinged grey nail to graphic, futuristic French manicures based on shoes, we see two classic looks made modern.

CND at New York Fashion Week – Day 3 Giveaway

Day 3 of New York Fashion Week was my first official day of covering backstage. I started out bright and early at my can’t miss show, Diego Binetti. I’ve gushed over and over again about how Diego “gets” nails and how each season the combination of his inspiration joined with the creativity of Jan Arnold and the entire CND team continues to amaze me. This season is no different.

I walked backstage and was greeted with a, “Are you ready to die?” and that was all I needed to hear. I knew it was on. Game. Set. Match. CND!

Runway or Everyday? – butter LONDON’s Nail Polish Rings at Vena Cava

Last season we saw nails elevated from accessories to full on jewelry at Diego Binetti. This season at Vena Cava, butter LONDON‘s Nonie Creme is pushing the boundaries, bringing nail polish to a whole new territory; skin.  That’s right, she’s taking over “real estate” from the skin and by creating jewelry with nail polish applied directly on fingers.

Nail art savant Melissa from The Daily Nail has extended her designs on to the skin in the past but this is the first time I’ve seen the actual nails ignored entirely.  Nonie applied “finger bands” of color to two fingers on each model, some single, some double, and a simple coat of clear Hard Wear top coat to the nails.

To replicate the look follow Nonie’s tips: Start with clean, dry skin.  Swipe with remover.  Start below the first knuckle.  Only paint a few fingers or else it will look too tribal. Allow 15 minutes to dry and expect 24 hours of wear.

Get the Vena Cava look using butter LONDON Royal Navy, Scoundrel, Tramp Stamp, and Union Jack Black. The orange, Flouro Orange, is not yet in production.  butter LONDON polishes retail for $14/ea and are available online at butterLONDON.com and Beauty.com.

My question to you is… is this look runway only or something that could be worn in the everyday world?  Would you apply nail polish on your skin on purpose?  What do you think of the “finger bands” look?
