Anna Paquin’s Mysterious Black Nails at the 62nd Annual Emmy Awards

anna-paquin-emmy-awards-black-nail-polish I don’t know what’s so special about black nail polish but apparently Anna Paquin is being as secretive about her nail color at last night’s Emmy Awards as she was about her wedding to Stephen Moyer. The True Blood star requested that Celebrity Green Nail Stylist Jenna Hipp be sworn to secrecy! If you ask me, that is just plain silly.  I get wanting your personal life kept private but NAIL POLISH??  Sookie, get over yourself!

In her defense, Jenna did say that Anna was an absolute pleasure to work with.  Even though I couldn’t get her to spill Anna’s nail color she did say that, “Anna was full of smiles and very hospitable! She and Steven even served me fresh lemonade!” My guess, this is her publicist’s call but it’s still lame sauce.

black-layering-anna-paquin-cnd-china-glaze-sinful-zoya However, Jenna did clue me in that she layered two black colors to achieve extra depth and shine. If you want to copy Anna’s look, I suggest you try CND Oilslick, a green based black with China Glaze Liquid Leather, a brown based black on top.  The different bases will give you a more true black and the jelly-esque nature of Liquid Leather will add a cool, squishy looking texture.

Another option is to add just a whisper of shimmer using Sinful Black on Black, my go-to black creme, over Zoya Raven with its subtle silver pearl.  The silvery specks will just barely peek through.

You know, Sookie and Bill are my least favorite characters on True Blood and something as silly as not releasing a nail color doesn’t help their cause.  What are your thoughts on this? Regardless of the top secret nail drama, Jenna gave Anna an amazing manicure and her hair and makeup were flawless.  The dress left something to be desired for me.

  1. Lovis says:

That seems quite silly to me..

  2. Elise says:

I love her and that dress too. And I don’t know, maybe she didn’t want to tell the colours so that bloggers would go crazy to find out what it was? :P

  3. puffnstuff says:

i dont think its a big deal; you need to get over yourself…

  4. AngelMartinez says:

HATEFUL, JUST PLAIN HATEFUL! I AM SICK OF HOLLYWOOD AND IDIOTS WITH EGOS. SHE IS UGLY ANYWAY, INSIDE AND OUT APPARENTLY.

    • Lisa says:

Seriously? You’re the one being hateful.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Honestly, I don’t think calling her ugly is necessary. Do I think it’s silly that she wanted to her nail color a secret? Yes but I don’t hate her or find her ugly.

  5. Kitty says:

Keeping that a secret? Haha, I just LOLed over here. Sorry but I completely agree. I find it silly as well.

  6. Liz says:

Her nails are not very pretty. Too Short.

  7. CinJudes says:

Completely silly & furthermore, kinda rude considering it was – even as black polish – one of the only unhidious things she was wearing.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I don’t know that it was rude as much as I felt bad that Jenna probably wouldn’t get any credit for her work with the colors not being released. I had a couple readers email me and another ask on Facebook about Anna’s polish so I wanted to post something about it even if we don’t know the actual shade.

  8. Gina says:

I agree, it’s silly. Why would this even be an issue. Whatever, it’s nothing incredibly unique IMO.

  9. Lauren says:

I am with you 100%. True Blood is definitely my favorite show, but she is lame. Who even thinks to say, don’t tell anyone what color(s) I have on?! I have never worn black nail polish and I never plan to, but it suits some people. I like it on others, just not me.

  10. Tara says:

    Hey there!

I completely agree with you on that. Tara’s my least favorite (wobbly chin kills me, gives all people named Tara [me] a bad name) and then Sookie and Bill. Black on Black is my go-to black as well!!! Secret nail polish…. strange. Maybe she doesn’t want to advertise for any particular companies?

    I dunno. I like black but it’s nothing special…..

    • All Lacquered Up says:

You make a good point. She could be working out a deal to represent a makeup brand or she may not want to publicize any brands. Though she did let Frederic Fekkai release info about the products used on her hair so who knows? I just found it funny.

  11. Janet West says:

aaahhhh….Don’t dis the girl. I do like the combo you have, especially the second!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I’m not dissing her personally. I just think it’s funny that she would want to keep the nail color a secret.

  12. miriam says:

The dress just screamed trying too hard and the fact that she wouldn’t tell anyone her nail polish brand (so silly) screams elitest. I also don’t like her character at all and fast forward through all her and Bill’s parts.

    • alex says:

If you fast forward through all the parts in which the main character appears, why even bother watching the show?? And why all the hate just because of nail polish?!

  13. Chaosbutterfly says:

Yeah, that’s stupid. I mean…come on. We can see it on her hands, so she might as well just tell the name. It’s not like we’re asking what color her underwear is. Sheesh.

  14. I think it’s silly that it would matter to anyone so much.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I wouldn’t say that it matters that much but I had some readers ask me about her nail color so someone was interested.

  15. sara says:

Honestly, I’ve been kind of zoning out if Eric isn’t on my screen. But that’s because Alexander Skarsgard sets my lady bits all aflame. :) For reals, though, keeping your polish secret? That’s just dumb.

  16. AndreaG says:

Wow, that is silly! I actually wondered if her polish was a dark navy shade… Thanks for the post and for giving us options! :-)

  17. Susanna says:

Very silly. And I’ve always thought she looked better as a brunette.

  18. Breanna says:

Weird. But it’s fine, I love her anyway. And I love True Blood. Maybe there’s a reason she didn’t want to spill? Like, maybe it’s some top secret polish that hasn’t been released yet? I’m just being optimistic though. Most likely, her publicist is just a jerk.

  19. Cristina says:

I completely agree about them being my least two favorite characters… And the whole thing with the polish is as dumb as her character.

  20. kathyb says:

I’m too distracted by that tragedy of a dress to comment on her lack of revealing the polish colors.

  21. TyTyBaby says:

Lame sauce is right (and a brilliant expression). Boo, Sook, booooo.

  22. Meg says:

I don’t like her dress – I think it was too reminiscent of Cleopatra, but not in a good way. And she needs to get over herself. It’s JUST nail polish! Besides, if she wanted to really get out there, all she’d have to do is give the “secret” so then she could say “all those girls are doing this because I did it first”.

  23. Ping says:

Agreed. That’s kinda weird. I mean, from faraway, it looks like a plain black polish anyway.

  24. Diane says:

Could someone possibly be releasing a True Blood tie-in polish collection? The Twilight nail polish collection by Nox seems to be catching on, it’s possible someone wanted to cash in on the sexy vampire trend.

Maybe she was wearing an unreleased colour, or conversely something *not* from the collection and didn’t want to seem disloyal to something coming up in the future.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

That is entirely possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up seeing her in an ad campaign for a brand sometime soon. I know of at least one star I couldn’t do a “get the nail look” about because she was wearing a brand of nail polish that wasn’t from the brand she reps.

  25. Winnie says:

Well, first, love the photo of her you posted, she’s sort of sneering in it, no?

Anyway, maybe it’s Wet n’ Wild or something, maybe she doesn’t want people to know she uses cheap polish (hey, some of those cheapie brands are fun!). Well, whatever, some people are just strange, what can you do?

I love the people who are indicating that YOU have some sort of problem because you think it’s silly of her to keep it a ‘secret’. Umm, you’re here to talk about nail polish, you often report on what celebs are wearing so people can choose to purchase the same color if they like (I just bought Lippmann’s Waking Up In Vegas because of that), so they’re kind of harshing your vibe here. And let’s face it, there are several things I can think I’d like to keep to myself if I were a celeb, my nail polish color is not one of them.

    • Winnie says:

Oh, and I find her dress somewhat frightening, to be honest.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

You know, I’ve always been a pop culture fan. I’ve been reading entertainment rags forever. I love to know what celebrities are wearing. Whether we’re talking clothes, accessories, makeup, hair products, nail polish, etc. Others could give a crap less and hey some people purposely won’t buy things if it’s used by a celeb they don’t like. I know from the emails and comments I receive that there are readers who enjoy this sort of thing as much as I do, so I post it. If some of my readers don’t like it, so be it. I can’t please everyone but hopefully I’ll post something else that is non-celeb related and it will make the anti-celeb nails faction happy.

      • Winnie says:

True enough, you can’t please all of the people all of the time. For the record, I’m actually not a Lady Gaga fan, couldn’t sing a song of hers if my life depended on it. But I liked the look of her polish on that cover, and I probably never would have noticed it if it weren’t for your post about it and it’s a great color, I love it! So thanks for that!

  26. Nicki says:

At the end of the day, black is black – you don’t REALLY get that much variety. I agree that keeping it secret seems a bit foolish. If it was some sort of blazing/unique/one-of-a-kind colour that we’d never seen before I could understand the need for secrecy, but black? Yawn.

  27. Paz says:

I’m guessing that it may be Chanel’s fall black that came out earlier. It has that black leather look as well.

  28. Brittany says:

Hmm… I like the idea of layering blacks for a more intense look!

Sookie and Bill are totally getting on my nerves lately. I want them to break up like they do in the books!

  29. kasia says:

I don’t see anything interesting in this nail polish ;p

  30. Jeanne says:

Obviously her looks (she is not a very pretty girl) and dress can’t get her the attention she must desire/crave . . so she had to go for the “I can’t tell my nail polish” route. Also, hate to say, but since I don’t watch TV, I don’t even know who she is. However, her dress looks like it wasn’t quite finished by the designer before she needed it at the Emmy’s. That front draping looks undone, like they pinned it up from the inside.

  31. Sookie and Bill are my least favourite characters too! They’re both annoying. She’s got a weird pinky nail, seems ridiculously small compared to other fingers. During red carpets and awards, that’s the time everyone ask what he/she is wearing. I think it’s rather silly to keep that a secret when it’s an opportunity to promote the upcoming product or whatever it is and it’s something so small like nail varnish! C’mon!

  32. robynsdragon says:

Ech! She is just too much! Its polish, not the secret to ‘eternal life’ – which BTW would be an awesome name for a ‘True Blood’ tie-in collection! And I agree with (our) Tara (above) about the wobbly-chin. Yuck!

As for the dress – if you tilt your head to the left, squint and imagine that the black wannabe-80s-lyrica-spandex is red, it starts to make sense. The baroque-inspired bolero distracted the bull just enough that he titled his head and only impaled part of the skirt into her … um… feminine garments. Awful!

  33. BV says:

LOLz. National secret. Hilarious. I actually thought it was Chanel Black Velvet..? Am I nuts.. my guess Chanel Black Velvet with some type of shiny black jelly on top. I think she looks great too BTW.

Anna – I love you girl but please remember that there may come a day when people don’t give a rat’s what you are wearing – they simply won’t care. Be a bit more gracious to admirers while they are still around!!

    Heh.
    BV

I don’t think I’m alone when I say there needs to be more Eric, hopefully scantily clad in True Blood.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

OMG for real! Bring on more Eric. In the first season with that horrible long wig he didn’t do much for me but now… GRRRR!!

  34. Laura says:

Nail issue aside, why does she always have this smug sneer on her face? Ugh. I don’t think I like her just because of that.

  35. auroragyps says:

I actually like the gold part of the dress, but the way they designed the bottom fabric part is bad. Combine the shorter front hem with the black platform pumps and it makes her look like she has stumpy little legs with hooves at the end. The whole thing should have been simple, sleek, and to the floor.

As for the “secret” nail polish, she could have just said “it’s a secret” all teasing and making people wonder what’s in the works. Much more fan friendly.

  36. margot says:

How silly ! I mean, it’s BLACK nail polish, not exactly a super exciting, super special, super hard to find color … but well, if she doesn’t want to tell, so be it !
I have to say, that dress doesn’t do much for her.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

No, the dress was not working on her. McQueen isn’t easy to pull off and it just wasn’t appropriate for the Emmys IMO. But I get the appeal of wanting to wear one of his dresses on a red carpet even if it is kind of fug on her.

      • margot says:

I am a big fan of McQueen but I think unless you are a stick on legs, this one might be quite hard to pull off haha must be one of those dresses that just looks best on a hanger :/
I personally think she could have gone McQueen and still look good, the dress just didn’t agree with her.
It’s just a pity, isn’t it ! I actually think she is a quite pretty girl, but that’s only my opinion :)

BTW thanks for taking the time to answer people’s comments. I like your blog very much and it is definitely my reference for nail polish :)

  37. Marina says:

That’s lame. What, she has nothing else to draw attention to herself than “secret” nail polishes? Good luck, What’s-Your-Face.

  38. Key says:

I love how people are hating on her because she wouldn’t say the name of her nail polish. I mean, come on now, she won’t name it so we all have to call her ugly and insult her character? Stay classy, you guys. Black nail polish is black nail polish, go to the store and pick up just about any one you see and you’ll get the same look. The upset over this is just plain ridiculous.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I agree with you. Hating on her personally is unnecessary. Especially the attacks on her appearance. I honestly thought it was amusing that she wanted to keep the nail polish a secret and since people had asked me about it, I wrote this post. I didn’t expect a shitstorm of hate for Anna Paquin to erupt.

  39. Lisa says:

Wow, people are awfully cranky today. I agree it’s pretty ridiculous to guard nail polish secrets, but the fact that people attack her choice to try and keep her life private by calling her ugly is awful. And yeah, her dress is pretty intense, but it’s Alexander McQueen, so of course it’s a bit over the top.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

To be honest, even if it looked like crap on me, I’d be tempted to wear a McQueen to an event. It just didn’t work on her for the Emmys.

And I agree that the ugliness is uncalled for.

  40. Jessica says:

I’m really turned off by the rudeness of some of these responses. There’s no reason to call someone hateful, lame, or ugly just because they want to keep the details of their manicure private. I’ll be sure to avoid the celebrity-related posts in the future.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

It’s a shame you feel the need to avoid any celeb related posts just based on this one. I honestly didn’t expect people to attack her personally. To say the decision to keep it a secret is lame is one thing but dogging her physically or saying she’s being hateful by keeping it a secret is too much.

  41. Jackie S. says:

Wow! I really liked her before this..LAME!

  42. Caitlyn says:

It’s silly to be secretive about nail polish ^^ and I don’t like the dress :-pp
My boyfriend’s all over True Blood right now and keeps watching it back and forth … my favorite character is Jessica, then Eric (he looks so much like my ex-boyfriend, it’s almost creepy ^^), then Sam and then Terry, whom I already know from Gilmore Girls ;)

Bill is like Angel from Buffy, blah. I never liked Angel. Though Spike fascinated me from the beginning ^^

Maybe Anna just didn’t want to make a fuss about her nail polish, like “oh I’m wearing china glazes liquid leather” and all the girls start running towards the next mall and getting tons of “liquid leather” ^^

  43. Ooooh, I love short, super-dark nails! Mine are almost always like that. The hubbub over the actual color seems a little silly, though … Maybe I’m showing my nail polish ignorance, but can people really tell the difference between one black polish and the next?

  44. Ice Queen says:

Well, someone needs to get over herself, doesn’t she? Why the heck would a polish colour be a state secret? Celebs… *shaking my head*

I have to say, I hated that dress Anna wore. I don’t care who designed it. It. Was. Ugly.

  45. Katy says:

There’s probably some dumb corporate reason behind it.

I’m one of the few who like B/S, I’ll come out and admit it. It’s not like Eric would be any better! I like Sookie, except for how she’s treating Tara this season. “Er, sorry about your trauma. Let’s talk about my boy problems now.”

  46. LoveSookie says:

I used to love this website and now I only check it a few times a month and articles like this one is the reason why. You basically called her out, insulted her character on the show and insulted her dress and wonder why people are being so nasty calling her names. Puh-lease. She may be repping another cosmetic company (frederick fakkai is hair care) and stating the name of the polish from a rival company may cause her to believe she would get into hot water or the polish in unreleased. I really think people who say mean things about celebrities have a crappy life and get joy out of saying nasty things about others. All you had to say is that her manicurist couldn’t tell you the polish but it was two dark shades layered. You included all the other stuff to strike out at her for not wanting it revealed and it came off as very bitter and the immature comments on here don’t help YOUR cause any.

  47. Jeanette says:

I’m a huge True Blood fan but don’t like Sookie. She’s my least favorite part of the books too which makes reading the books terribly difficult since they’re all from her perspective! I’m a total Bill fan and can’t wait for the break-up!

As far as black polish, I don’t wear it often. I am a little gothy and I feel that it looks far too cliche on me with my entire black wardrobe. I never thought to layer blacks so now I’ll have to at least give that a try.

  48. zin says:

it looks exactly like when i layer china glaze liquid leather under black diamond and use nails for males topcoat to get that plastic-y latex-y thing. i think she looked slammin! haters gonna hate.

  49. Rainbow says:

I hate Anna Paquin and I also fast forward through Sookie and Bill scenes on True Blood..I don’t know what Vampire Eric sees in her even if she is the only remaining wait wut

  50. Barb says:

I agree its a bit wonky to not release your nail polish. The only reason I can think she didnt is that she created her own color and they are now going to manufacture it? Maybe they used Zoya and she will have a “Sookie” polish coming out soon?? LOL

I will say that I really did love her dress. I thought she looked gorgeous. And her shoes were to die for. I love her and Stephen together.

  51. Wlee says:

My guess is the secrecy has to do with a competing brand endorsement… if she’s wearing, say, Nars polish but talking to, say, Chanel about a deal, she wouldn’t want to reveal it!

  52. Rebecca says:

She’s my least fave too. I even prefer the newbie Jessica to her character. I think she was miscast in that role. I know she bleached her hair blonde, but I think in the book the character is a curvy/tan blonde haired and blue eyed woman.

  53. Julia says:

I agree, I think it’s just plain silly. It’s a simple black nail polish, nothing extraordinary or special. I guess she doesn’t want to advertise or something?..

  54. Anita says:

The nail polish is just bizarre celeb Behavior, but I’m more concerned about the dress. It looks like she accidentally tucked the front into her knickers!

  55. Jennifer says:

The nail polish secrecy doesn’t bother me. She probably has a reason that we just don’t know about. Also, I LOVE Anna’s Sookie. She’s a very strong character in my opinion (much better than whiny bella).

  56. Nancy says:

I was recently looking for “the perfect black” for layering and read this post in your blog that Sinful Colors Black on Black was your “go-to.” I bought it yesterday and am wearing it today and O.M.G. is that a slick, gorgeous, vinyl-black black! ONE COAT! Holy cow! It’s perfect, goes on flawlessly and… LOVE. :) Thanks for sharing your experience so others (like me) can learn. :)

    Nancy
