The Black Polish Trend

I wouldn’t be a true polish fanatic if I didn’t pay homage to the biggest trend to hit the polish world since Uma Thurman donned Chanel Vamp in Pulp Fiction. Chanel’s introduction of Black Satin caused a frenzy like I have never seen. The insane eBay prices, the story about Sarah Michelle Gellar stealing one from a party, the waiting lists at Chanel counters for a re-release, it’s madness. Pure madness. And with the release of Chanel’s new black for spring, Noir Ceramic, the craze continues.

The truth is, black polish isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t suit all skin tones or tastes. It doesn’t make you an un-stylish buffoon if you don’t love black polish. Wear what you like or wear nothing at all, there is no right or wrong. Just keep your nails presentable.

I personally refused to give in to Chanel. I’m here to tell you that there are options for everyone. If you want to join the dark polish trend but don’t want to go for full on black or give in to eBay prices for Chanel, I’m here to help. From my personal collection, I present my “best of” vampy polishes. With the exception of the polishes marked (DC’d), all of these are available in drugstores, salons or through the online e-tailers I have listed in my links.

(l-to-r) Misa Stiletto, Milani Black Cherry, Zoya Yasmeen, OPI Lincoln Park At Midnight, OPI Black Tie Optional (DC’d)

(l-to-r) Revlon Dark Pleasures Talk Dirty, Creative NFS, Creative Blue Blood (DC’d), Misa Blueberry Glaze, China Glaze Up All Night, Revlon Dark Pleasures Midnight Affair

(l-to-r) OPI Espresso Your Style, Orly Talk Dirty, Creative Fedora, Sinful Colors Black on Black, Zoya Raven, Orly Goth, Misa Wishing On A Star

I can’t believe there’s actually someone out there who is as obsessed with nail polish as I am! yay!

Most excellent! I’m a huge fan of black polish and also refuse to cave to Chanel. Though I have many of these, I’m always looking for more so I am most appreciative of your photographic guide :~D

Kim – There are a lot of us polish nuts roaming around. I guess we just keep it to ourselves. I know the employees at my local Trade Secret probably think I’m nuts for stalking the new collections.

Trina – Stay strong girl! Chanel won’t get us all. I hope my photos are helpful. Dark polishes are so hard to capture in pics.

I love your blog!! Nice to see there are “others” like me!!

I was looking through the Community Nail Polish Gallery and found a picture of Chanel’s Black Satin. The color looks like black patent leather. Do you think it really looks like that or do you think the top coat may have something to do with it? I don’t really want to spend $30 on a bottle of nail polish–can you recommend a comparable polish? Sometimes the black polishes can be dull–I’d like one that has brilliant shine. Thanks!

Misa WOTS is what Chanel Black Satin (U.S. version) should have been!

I must admit I am a Chanel Vamp addict. It’s all I will wear. Yes there are many lesser brands who have close matches. Yet none compare to Chanel vamp. I was frustrated with the girls on Ebay yet I have been a customer there as well when my dept store runs out. Oh well:)
