What’s On Your Nails? is a series focusing on my fellow beauty bloggers and industry insiders, their favorite nail polish and other hot nail topics.

I have a real treat for you this week campers. The uber-fab Daneen from Spoiled Pretty is showing us what’s on her nails. A true beauty fanatic, Daneen can talk product and her love of Kim Kardashian’s makeup until she’s blue in the face but it’s her passion for gorgeous shoes and handbags that make my wallet want to cry. She regularly posts her latest finds, like these total hotness Chinese Laundry platforms from DSW that are too amazing to resist.

But one of the things I find truly unique about her site is when she teams up with blogging partner in crime, Amber from Beauty Blogging Junkie, for their theme weeks. The recent You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman week celebrated eco-conscious beauty in honor of Earth Day. Having had the pleasure of hanging with Amber and Daneen, I can tell you that with those two, a pair of Depends in necessary because hilarity is sure to ensue.

Read on to learn more about Daneen, see which Fanatic Favorite Winner is on her tips and how she feels about matching polish to your outfit.

Introduce yourself to the ALU readers. Tell us a little about you and your blog.
After I got married in June 2007, I had a good amount of free time on my hands. I didn’t have any more wedding planning to do – so I was
looking for another artistic outlet. Creative writing has always been a hobby of mine, and I love cosmetics like no one you’ve ever met – so everything sort of came together. And voila…you have Spoiled Pretty.

Written in a conversational and snarky tone, Spoiled Pretty is like taking a peek into the journal of your fashion and beauty-obsessed BFF – the one who knows which products to stockpile and sidestep; the gal pal who can talk for hours (and who has) about her haute new handbag; and the trend-spotting, deal-finding friend who loves nothing more than to share the deets.

Why is OPI You Don’t Know Jacques! your favorite?
In November 2008, I decided to rock the “greige” nail look that Glamour said was all the rage. So when I visited my local nail salon, I combed the polish displays looking for OPI’s You Don’t Know Jacques!

I’m pretty indecisive by nature, and I wasn’t very confident that the dirty taupe lacquer would flatter my caramel complexion. But I figured that it’s nail polish and it comes off. So I took a chance, and I’m so glad that I did because it has become my favorite nail shade EVER.

After my nails were thoroughly dry, I ran home to blog about my fab new find. And, I kid you not, it took me twice as long to finish the review because I kept getting distracted; I was hypnotized by my deliciously dark manicure.

The best part about You Don’t Know Jacques! is the compliments you receive when you wear it. Even when my manicure is way past its expiration and it’s all chipped up (I call it my Jacqued-up mani), people still stop me and ask about the color.

It’s like Chris Rock says, “There are only three things women need in life: food, water, and compliments. And the occasional pair of shoes.”

What is on your tips and toes right now?
On my tips, I’m wearing Katy (duochrome hot magenta with shimmer) from Zoya’s Ooh La La collection. And my little piggies are sporting Chanel’s Orange Fizz, from the Summer 2009 collection.

Do you consider nail polish a beauty necessity or accessory? Why?
When it comes to getting manicures, my mom and sister are like the US Postal Service…through rain, snow, sleet or hail, the nails must get done. That gene skipped right over me, I’m a little embarrassed to admit. When my nails are freshly manicured, I feel pretty and put together. And I always choose a shade that reflects the season, and the occasion. But far too often, I’m so busy that I can’t keep up with my nails like I’d like to. Hence the Jacqued-up manicure I referred to earlier. So long story short (too late), I would say “accessory.”

How many bottles of nail polish do you own?
I would estimate that I probably own 175 bottles of nail polish. Isn’t that funny? I don’t wear nail polish all of the time, and yet I have enough bottles to change my nail color every 2-3 days and not repeat a color for an entire year.

How often do you change your nail polish?
Like I said, I’m not fanatical about my nails. And I often embarrass my mother walking around with chipped up nails. But my toenails are always done. I switch up the colors about once every 2-3 weeks. In the summertime, it’s more often.

Do you have a favorite nail treatment you think my readers should know about? Why is it so fab?
I love me some Seche Vite (pictured right with MAC On The Prowl). When I paint my own nails, it always seems to be at some late night hour…and I don’t know what it is about my DNA, but my nails take forev
er and a day to dry. Before I found Seche Vite, I would be forced to fall asleep with my hands carefully perched on my chest (as not to awaken with a sheet-marked manicure). But now, I just use it as a top coat, and it dries my polish before my klutzy self has a chance to mess it all up.

I’m also a big fan of Zoya Remove+. The ingenious bottle prevents the spillage typically accompanies traditional nail polish removers. Plus the formula is purple, which is pretty.

What do you think will be the big nail trend for summer?
Brights will be hot for summer; they always are. I also think that creamy nudes will be big. They look hot with a (faux) tan, and elongate fingers – and who doesn’t love that? I also predict that nail art will be in. It used to be that you had to go to a salon for professional-looking nail art. But there are so many products on the market (like Sally Hansen Nail Art Pens and Konad Stamping Nail Art) that, with a steady hand, women can create intricate designs at home.

What nail trend do you wish would go away?
Ugh. I really hate the long, really square acrylic nails. Every time I see women sporting them, I want to introduce them to a nail clipper and glass file.

What is the biggest nail faux pas that women make?
I roll my eyes when people match their nails to their outfits. It’s so unimaginative. Nails are one of the few places you can take color risks without people looking at you sideways. So my advice is to be adventurous and try something unexpected. It’s just nail polish. It comes off.

Thanks for a fun filled interview Daneen! Fanatics, make sure you visit SpoiledPretty.com to keep up with Daneen’s latest beauty and fashion loves.

“What’s On Your Nails?” with MissChievous

What’s On Your Nails? is a series focusing on my fellow beauty bloggers and industry insiders, their favorite nail polish and other hot nail topics.

Fanatics, I am thrilled to bring you this installment of WOYN? with YouTube makeup queen and beauty blogger, Julia (aka MissChievous). I’ve been a fan of Julia’s makeup tutorials for quite some time now. I became hooked when I first discovered her “Keeing it soft & glowy” tut on Specktra. To this day, it’s still my all time fave m.u. tut and the look I most aspire to recreate. Of course I wasn’t blessed with her flawless, porcelain complexion but a girl can dream.

In addition to her varied range of tutorials and looks, like this one for an Illamasqua contest, Julia’s a lover of polish and her readers took notice. After many viewer requests, she now includes a note about what shade she’s wearing in each video.

Read on to learn more about Julia and see what green (yes I said GREEN!) she’s loving at the moment.

Introduce yourself to the ALU readers. Tell us a little about you and your blog.
My name is Julia and I am a makeup artist and beauty blogger. I create makeup and beauty related videos on Youtube and also write a beauty blog. My main passion is makeup but my nail polish collection is rapidly growing.

Why is Misa Green with Envy one of your favorites?
I don’t have one favorite nail polish but right now I love this color for spring, it’s so unusual but bright, it reminds me of Shrek! I wore this in one of my Youtube videos and had so many comments on it. Some of my other favorites include China Glaze Ruby Pumps, China Glaze For Audrey, OPI Done Out in Deco, Color Club Revvvolution, and China Glaze Japanese Koi. I like nail polishes that are conversation starters! [editor's note: a polish lover after my own heart]

What is on your tips and toes right now?
Toes is China Glaze Ruby Pumps, Tips is China Glaze Mom’s Chiffon.

Do you consider nail polish a beauty necessity or accessory? Why?
It’s an accessory but a very fun one! I think nail polish is a great way to incorporate color into an outfit since I like to wear a lot of neutral colors like black and white. It’s also a way to express my personality since most people tend to stick with nude/natural shades and red/pinks. That’s why I like to wear bold colors to make a statement. I also keep my nails polished at all times to keep them strong; the result is that people always ask me if my nails are fake! I’ve never had fake nails in my life.

How many bottles of nail polish do you own?
I have never counted but I would estimate between 40-50, but it keeps growing!

How often do you change your nail polish?
Sometimes every second or third day. If I know I won’t have time to change my nail polish within a week or more, I wear a sheer nude color so that chips won’t be so obvious.

Do you have a favorite nail treatment you think my readers should know about? Why is it so fab?
The basecoat that I have been using for the past month or so and that I like is Nail Tek Foundation II, and for topcoat I swear by Seche Vite. I don’t know how I ever managed to do my nails without the latter! It just dries the polish so fast and makes it super glossy. For my cuticles I always carry a tin of Burt’s Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream in my purse, I love the lemon scent and how it moisturizes my tips.

What do you think will be the big nail trend for summer?
Bright colors like orange, hot pinks and turquoise, and pastel shades like baby blue, lavender and pastel cream shades.

What nail trend do you wish would go away?
Tacky nail art with glitter and rhinestones galore, long artificial nails with the very thick white band at the top – it just looks so cheap and fake in my opinion.

What is the biggest nail faux pas that women make?
Wearing nail polish with big chips in it for days without removing, or applying polish all over the cuticle area and not cleaning up the mess. It looks sloppy, I’d rather see bare nails or clear polish. Also wearing inappropriate colors or nail art at a job interview or for business meetings can be a big no-no.

Thanks for taking the time to share your love of polish with us Julia. Fanatics, be sure to check out Julia’s YouTube channel and blog for more amazing makeup looks.

“What’s On Your Nails?” with Nancy from Beauty 411

What’s On Your Nails? is a series focusing on my fellow beauty bloggers and industry insiders, their favorite nail polish and other hot nail topics.

I’m very pleased to bring you this week’s What’s On Your Nails with one of my very fave blogging peeps, Nancy from Beauty411. I was an avid reader of Nancy’s blog long before I met her last year and we’ve been Twitter buddies ever since. I consider her my go-to resource when it comes to skincare because her no nonsense reviews and detailed ingredient analysis are always spot on. But besides all that, she’s a fellow nail polish fanatic with a weakness for Chanel.

Read on to learn more about Nancy, which Chanel is tops on her list and what treatment product she considers a must after discovering it right here on ALU.

Introduce yourself to the ALU readers. Tell us a little about you and your blog.
I’m Nancy from Beauty411 and I think I was born a beauty addict! My blog, Beauty411, allows me to share my beauty finds with friends, family and my readers. The best part about blogging has been the friendships I’ve made with other beauty bloggers, including you, Michelle. :) Another highlight was meeting Bobbi Brown. In “real life”, I’m a sales representative with a passion for high-tech skincare.

Why is Chanel Vendetta your favorite?
I have a weakness for Chanel nail polish and from the first time I saw Vendetta, I just had to have it. It looks amazing on, wears like a dream and I always get compliments on it. And I can’t wait to get my bottle of Cosmic Violine, on your recommendation!

What is on your tips and toes right now?
Currently on my tips – Lippman “It’s Raining Men” from the summer collection (pictured). On toes, it’s Zoya “Renee” from the La-Di-Da collection.

Do you consider nail polish a beauty necessity or accessory? Why?
I think of nail polish as an accessory, although well groomed nails are a beauty necessity. Your nail polish can really finish off a look–or the lack of it, can really draw attention to the fact that something is missing.

How many bottles of nail polish do you own?
Way too many! I’m a little OCD with nail polish, in that I use a few times and then move on.

How often do you change your nail polish?
I change it up weekly; usually Sunday nights, in time for the week ahead.

Do you have a favorite nail treatment you think my readers should know about? Why is it so fab?
A couple of favorites. The Seche Vite Topcoat, which I learned from reading your blog and talking to you at the Total Beauty Summit! It’s now something I use regularly. I also like the Lippmann Start Me Up treatment set/products.

What do you think will be the big nail trend for summer?
Red lipstick is a big trend for summer makeup, so I think the glitter polishes we’re seeing will play off of that for summer nails; or you could keep it understated and go with a natural color if you don’t want to be matchy-matchy. Neon colors are also back in a big way for summer.

What nail trend do you wish would go away?
I’m not a fan of the French pedicure. I just can’t get into that look, even though I love French manicures. Go figure.

What is the biggest nail faux pas that women make?
Well, I know the biggest nail faux pas that I make is simply not allowing the nail polish to dry adequately. I’m always in such a rush to hurry up and move onto the next task on my list. I’m trying to get better at really allowing the nails to dry for 20-30 minutes before engaging in an activity that could ruin my manicure. Like Twittering! Not good for wet nails!

Thanks a ton for joining in on the WOYN? fun Nancy! Fanatics, be sure to check out Beauty411.net.

“What’s On Your Nails?” with Fiorella Valdesolo

in What's On Your Nails? with 3 Comments
What’s On Your Nails? is a series focusing on my fellow beauty bloggers and industry insiders, their favorite nail polish and other hot nail topics.

You may remember my little freak out over being in the April edition of Glamour Magazine. The article’s writer, Fiorella Valdesolo is a freelancer that contributes to Glamour, their website and other publications like the New York Post. And as the Beauty Director for NYLON Magazine she even wrote a book, Pretty: The NYLON Book of Beauty.

After reading many of her nail related posts on the Glamour beauty blog, I just had to ask about her polish tastes. So read on to learn more about Fiorella and check out what NARS polish tops her list of faves.

Introduce yourself to the ALU readers. Tell us a little about your beauty background.
I have been working as a writer and editor for various women’s magazines since moving to New York in 2000. Most recently I spent four years at Nylon magazine, where I was the beauty director/deputy editor, before leaving in the fall to pursue a freelance career.

Why is NARS Jungle Red your favorite?
When I first saw The Women—the original 1939 version, not the ridiculous remake released last year—I thought that “Jungle Red,” the color of choice in the film’s nail salon, had to be the coolest shade name ever. Apparently Francois Nars agreed, and after starting NARS, he created his own version of Jungle Red lacquer. While the name is amazing, the color, a deep, warm-toned, totally sexy scarlet, is even better. (If I had to pick two runners up for favorite polish they would be Chanel’s Vamp, and NARS Candy Darling.)

What is on your tips and toes right now?
Jungle Red on my tips, and nothing on my toes. Sadly, my feet remain very neglected in the winter months. [editors note: she responded when it was still cold and snowy]

Do you consider nail polish a beauty necessity or accessory? Why?
For me, there are very few absolute beauty necessities—toothpaste, sunblock, soap, shampoo—so I consider nail polish an accessory. That said, I am a total accessory junkie.

How many bottles of nail polish do you own?
Currently around 25… and I just cleaned.

How often do you change your nail polish?
Twice a month.

Do you have a favorite nail treatment you think my readers should know about? Why is it so fab?
I love Creative Nail Design’s Ridge Out Base Coat. My nails, particularly on my toes, are not perfectly smooth, so this product does a great job of filling in the tiny ridges before I apply polish.

What do you think will be the big nail trend for spring?

Deep purple, totally matte shades, and flesh tones.

What nail trend do you wish would go away?
Black nails, and, I know I’ll get heat for this, but traditional French manicures.

What is the biggest nail faux pas that women make?
Can I say public clipping? That really grosses me out.

“What’s On Your Nails?” with Elke Von Freudenberg

By on April 20, 2009
in What's On Your Nails? with 4 Comments
What’s On Your Nails? is a series focusing on my fellow beauty bloggers and industry insiders, their favorite nail polish and other hot nail topics.

Celebrity Makeup Artist, Beauty Blogger, Entrepreneur, Mentor. Elke Von Freudenberg is all these things but above all, she’s a friend. As the founder of The Beauty Blog Network, Elke is one of the reasons beauty bloggers are such a strong force in the industry. She also introduced me to an amazing, supportive group of women that helped turn me from a clueless newbie into an experienced blogger.

And now she’s the creator of her very own signature line of eyebrow products, The Model Brow. When I had dinner with Elke in L.A. last May, she was still working on the final packaging and now it’s all a reality. So exciting!

Read more about Elke, her thoughts on chipped polish and see her fave polish that just happens to be on my must have list after the jump!

Introduce yourself to the ALU readers. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a celebrity makeup artist as well as a blogger. I get to try out makeup products on shoots, celebrities, models as well as myself, and blog about it! I’m also an eyebrow expert in NY and LA as well as the Founder of The Beauty Blog Network.

What is your favorite nail polish?
Parlez Vous-OPI, because it’s just about the most trendiest color right now. lov!

What is on your tips and toes right now?
MAC’s Naturally Rich on toes, and MAC Demi-Blanc on fingers.

Do you consider nail polish a beauty necessity or accessory? Why?
An accessory. It’s like another piece of jewelry. It highlights a certain color in your wardrobe, or makeup. It just gives a little something extra.

How many bottles of nail polish do you own?
Oh lord… about 80-100?

How often do you change your nail polish?
Usually every 2/3 weeks. Polish lasts really long on me, but if I have a certain event or something, I’ll definitely change it to reflect my look for that day or night.

Do you have a favorite nail treatment you think my readers should know about? Why is it so fab?
Any cuticle remover product I can get my hands on. I also love sugar scrubs for hands as well. Just makes the whole end result cleaner. And cuticles look better too.

What do you think will be the big nail trend for spring?
I think it’ll still be pastels for spring, like last, just a grayer version of it.. more dusty.

What nail trend do you wish would go away?
I’m not a fan of the super bright, neon shades. Just doesn’t do a thing for me and screams teeny bopper to me. Just can’t do it. Even on my toes.. just can’t.

What is the biggest nail faux pas that women make?
Chipped nails…. chip chip chip. Makes me wonder what those nails were doing to get that way without a fix. If you can’t take the polish off when it’s looking bad, don’t put it on in the first place. Because yes, everyone is looking at it.
