DIY Nail Art Tutorials

Confession: I’m not a DIY sort of gal. For instance, we specifically bought our house because we didn’t have to change a thing, besides a few paint colors. And any improvements we’ve made have been done by pros. I see friends reupholstering chairs in funky fabrics, stenciling their walls or jazzing up thrift store pieces with rivets, buttons, sequins, etc and I don’t have the slightest desire to do that.

For those reasons and more, when I heard this week’s Makeup Wars theme, DIY Beauty, I was hesitant. Yes, I dabble in nail art but it’s not my forte. I just don’t have the crafter gene. However, there are a couple nail art techniques I simply adore so I’m sharing them with you in hopes that if my non-Martha Stewart self can attempt them, so can you!

My theme for 2014 is all about getting back on track. 2013 was kind of crazy for me. There were some major highs and devastating lows that threw things out of whack. And while one of the high points was getting back into the game with my blog, which quietly turned 7 last week, I want to take things to the next level in 2014.

I have set some attainable and logical goals for myself in the beauty, blogging and health realm, which fits in with this week’s Makeup Wars theme, 2014 Resolutions. Previously, I gave you some ideas for Nail Resolutions, now it’s time to share what my goals are for the coming year.

When it comes to special occasion makeup, I tend to rely on a smokey eye as evidenced by my Jump Back Ball looks (here and here). So when the latest Makeup Wars challenge called for a Holiday Eye look, I decided to buck tradition by opting for soft and shimmery, featuring the new Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, offset by a bold lip. Holiday 2013 Wish List

First, I can’t get a grasp on the fact that Thanksgiving is this week. I’ve finally gotten used to writing 2013 and it’s going to be 2014 before we know it. Argh!!

That being said, the holidays are just around the corner and I love putting together a Holiday Wish List as much as I did as a kid when I dogeared pages of the Sears Wish Book. To make things easier on the boyfriend, I even made him a secret Pinterest board to make his shopping a bit easier. Amazon Wish Lists are an amazing thing as well.

So what am I asking for this year?

My first year in college, I joined a sorority (Alpha Delta Pi). Living on an engineering floor comprised of 44 guys and 5 girls didn’t offer much in terms of socializing so going Greek made sense for me. One of the rules my sisters imparted on me upon receiving my first “letters” to wear… don’t wear them in public without AT LEAST mascara and lip gloss on your face.

It sounds silly but it’s something that has stuck with me throughout the years. Like the the mnemonic device, “Don’t leave home without your M.I.L.K. (money, ID, lipstick and keys),” it’s just good sense!

So when it comes to my 5 Minute Face, the focus is always lips and eyes. And considering that I’m usually running late and don’t have time for a full face of makeup, this is pretty much my everyday look.
