Kimora Lee Simmons’ Baby Phat & KLS fall collections hit the runway Friday night and I was backstage to see all the action, up close and personal. Crammed into the tight coat room of the Roseland Ballroom, makeup, nail and hair artists were fast at work. The overall look was inspired by the 1920′s, very Clara Bow. Heavy smokey eyes, deep ruby lips and marcel waves for the hair but with a modern twist.

The nails represented what CND is dubbing the “techno chic” look; one half of their color story for fall. For Baby Phat that meant the tips were elongated, black ovals bejeweled with Swarovski crystals that looked like black onyx. Pictures cannot truly justify how utterly fab those crystals look. I’m so far away from being a nail gem girl but my inner klepto wanted to snag a set for myself.

To me, those black onix nails look boring. Svarovski crystals look monotonous on them. I would add more different colors, depending on each single outfit. Please, show us something original.

Sorry, but long black nails? Bejeweled or not — scary, scary, scary!

Not a fan but then again, I have to remember that Fashion Week is not about practicality, it’s about artistry, innovation, and paradigm-breaking. Looks like several designers have risen to that challenge, but this nail design, not so much.

So we are still seeing black nails… innnteresting….

Am I seriously the only one who thought those nails looked gorgeous? I know we’re all on the short and vampy bandwagon but, like it or not, longer nails are on their way in.

Now I know my shotty camera work doesn’t do those tips justice but they were mesmerizing in person. Very appropriate for the ’20s theme. I think a colored crystal would have been tacky.

Cincy, I’m totally with you! Baby Phat is always about extreme “fabulosity”, and those black gems are fieeeeerce. I’m not usually into nail gems either, but I’m a sucker for almost anything black and shiny/sparkly. I saw this show on Full Frontal Fashion and loved the whole aesthetic.

Also, just need to say how thrilled I am for you being at Fashion Week! You know the NB is so proud to have you representin’!

The Beauty Bug is with you Michelle – I LOVE the black nails – just wish they were a little shorter. Short, neat vampy nails tend to look the best.

I really like to keep my nails more attractive. Black is my one of the favorite color. I am just looking for this kind of information. Thank you for this great information. I will try this as soon as possible. Again thanks for this nice post.
