JINsoon Fall 2015 – Operetta

With her Fall 2015 collection, Jin Soon Choi has proven herself a master of the secret shimmer, that subtle glimmer you can see in direct light, but is less noticeable to the casual viewer. It’s like you’re in on a secret that only other nail fanatics know. The five, rich shades of the JINsoon Operetta collection draw inspiration from Art Deco designer Erté and the opulent costumes he designed for operas.

Formula & Application

JINsoon nail polish is 5-Free (Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor) and includes UV filters to prevent yellowing and fading of color. The bottles are tall, thin rectangles with shiny, black removable caps.

The brush has changed since the launch of the brand. It is now round, short and a thick with flexible bristles that easily fan out to cover the nail. I prefer round brushes as I find it easier to create a smooth curve along the cuticle.

The formula differs a bit between shades, so I will address that individually below.

JINsoon Aria (inspired by Floria Tosca’s gown in Tosca) is a lush fuchsia with a tonal subtle shimmer. The formula is thin, easy to manipulate, and well pigmented, giving full-coverage in two coats. It’s a little redder and more berry-toned than the comparison shades, OPI Kinky in Helsinki, Zoya Izzy and Zoya Anaka.

JINsoon Cantata (inspired by Mélisande’s dress in Pelléas et Mélisande) is a unique grey shimmer. Overall, it’s a cool grey, but there is a muddy undertone to it. Though the pink shimmer offsets that. The formula is a little thicker and the first coat was a bit patchy, but with three coats, perfection! I haven’t seen anything quite like this. The only other grey I own with pink shimmer is OPI It’s Totally Ft Worth It, but it’s really more of a silver.

JINsoon Oratorio (inspired by Cio Cio San’s robe in Madame Butterfly) is a warm tan with gold and light bronze metallic shimmer that gives it a speckled egg appearance. The formula is similar to Cantata in that it’s a little thicker in consistency and a bit streaky. I used three coats with this one as well. In my collection, Oratorio has no dupes. Orly Nite Owl is more of a deep champagne, while China Glaze Fast Track is a lot warmer.

JINsoon Soubrette (inspired by Donna Elvira’s gown in Don Giovanni) is a reddish purple with subtle shimmer that has a jewel-toned satin feel. I’m wearing this one now and the glow is real, people! The formula is so buttery smooth and the pigmentation is on point. Two coats and boom! Zoya Haven is its closest living relative, though Soubrette is brighter.

JINsoon Verismo (inspired by Manon Lescaut’s cape in Manon) is a deep, cat’s eye golden green, micro-flecked metallic in a blackened base. Super pigmented and deliciously smooth, it barely needs two coats. I’d say it falls squarely between Dior Czarina Gold and MAC Neptune.

I’ve been wearing Cantata a lot lately (at least three times), but wanted to try something different with it, so I decided to stamp this geometric honeycomb pattern over Cantata with one of the China Glaze Romantiques. Plate: Bundle Monster XL04 or BM-422.

Bottom Line: I’m totally smitten with these colors. I’m really into secret shimmer right now, instead of my usual affection for over-the-top sparkle, and this collection hits the spot. Cantata is truly special and Soubrette is just so decadent and glowy. Verismo is another favorite since it has that baroque, old gold feel that is a great fit for fall.

The JINsoon Fall 2015 Operetta collection is available now at JINsoon.com, Nordstrom.com and Sephora.com. JINsoon nail polish retails for $18/ea.

Thoughts on the Operetta collection? Do you plan to pick up any of these shades?

Wow – these are all gorgeous! The glow in Soubrette and Aria reminds me of Essie “The Lace is On,” one of my favorites! Also, Cantata looks like it might be a dupe for Julep “Devon.” Have you ever tried any of the Julep shades?

If butterLondon’s Wallis had an older, darker sister this would be it. Gorgeous, my pick of the lot.

Thanks for comparing Verismo to bL’s Wallis. I love Wallis and am wearing it now. Verismo is different enough to justify getting. All the colors are great. Cool collection. Thanks for sharing.

Within 5 minutes of reading this post I ordered Cantata online. I am wearing it now and am getting a couple of compliments a day. Beautiful and a great work color too. Very professional while still being a bit different.

  16. Each one is stunning in its own right, and I am happy to see that the fuchsia shimmer–which every brand takes a stab at–is close to the discontinued OPI Kinky in Helsinki–my mom’s favorite shade. With the added benefit of being in a 5-Free formula!
