Spring Nail Trend and Nail Art Tutorial

As much as I love color, a clean black and white print is effortlessly chic. Simple, sophisticated nail art dominated the Spring 2015 runways. Subtle black and white looks, created by Deborah Lippmann and Jin Soon Choi made quite a splash.

Today, I sharing an easy nail art tutorial, inspired by a NYFW SS15 design, to help get your nails on trend.

Inspiration and Nail Polishes Used

Michael Kors, Edun, Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta are just a few of the designers who featured black and white prints in their spring collections. It’s a classic color combination that is timelessly chic. The same goes for nails. A graphic black and white nail is so striking with a minimalist feel. For today’s look, I used the Edun design (second from left) as my inspiration. The solid black with just a teaser of print, is so elongating.

To recreate the design as nail art, I headed to the Sally Beauty Nail Studio. If you remember, I told you about the new nail wall rolling out nationwide to Sally Beauty stores. Lucky for me, the store in Mayfield recently moved so they already have the Nail Studio wall filled with 750 nail polish shades. It’s a cornucopia of color!

I picked up OPI Black Onyx, OPI Big Apple Red and Paper Mache from Sally Beauty exclusive brand, FingerPaints.

Get The Look

  • Apply a base of FingerPaints Paper Mache. I used three coats. You don’t have to be precise on the sides since it will be covered. Wait for it to completely dry.
  • Cut painter’s tape, scotch tape or use a nail stencil to block off the center of the nail.
  • Polish over the nail with OPI Black Onyx and immediately pull up the tape.
  • Use a toothpick dipped in OPI Black Onyx to create irregular shapes on the nail. I used OPI Big Apple Red on the ring finger as an accent.
