Makeup Wars – Favorite Mascaras

I was not blessed with long, luscious lashes, so when it comes to mascara I need all the help I can get. They’re also stick-straight, lucky me, which means I need a mascara that not only lengthens and defines but also holds a curl. That’s a pretty tall task for one product, but I’ve found four go-to’s that are up for the job. If you’re looking for a clump free mascara that you can swipe on and jam, I’ve got you covered.

My Best Mascaras

Everyday Length & Separation

On a day-to-day, I want my lashes to appear naturally enhanced. “My lashes but better,” if you will. I look for a mascara with short, rubberized bristles that really get in there to define each individual lash.

COVERGIRL Clump Crusher ($5.60, Drugstore.com) has filled that need for over a year, but I recently received a sample of Benefit Roller Lash ($24, Sephora.com) as a Klout Perk and I’m obsessed. I mean, it can hold a curl. Don’t judge, but I fell asleep while testing Roller Lash and my lashes WERE STILL CURLED when I woke up. What more can I ask for?

Extreme Separation

When the vibrating mascara fad was happening in 2008 there were a lot of hits and misses, but Estee Lauder TurboLash ($38, Nordstrom.com) has stuck around for a reason. It’s great if you lack steady hands or wiggling a wand leaves black marks on your skin. That’s why I’ve been raving about it for 6+ years. I even have backups of my backups just in case they discontinue it.

Extreme Volume and Length

With lashes as sad as mine, I’m all for trickery when to comes to faking a full lash. However, I’m not usually in the mood to deal with applying falsies. Too Faced Better Than False Lashes ($35, Sephora.com) solves that problem. The three-step system includes a coat of lash-extending fibers. While I’ve tried other fiber-esque lash products, this one has given me the least contact irritation.

I picked up Better Than False Lashes during an ULTA 21 Days of Beauty sale and repurchased it since. Of course, now there is a new, improved version, Better Than False Lashes Extreme, that I totally plan to get when my current supply runs out.

  1. Benefit Roller Lash is my fave high end! Milani Total Lash Cover is my fave drugstore pick. I’ve tried vibrating mascaras omg they tickle. I can’t even handle it LMAO

  2. Retrodiva says:

Okay, the Roller Lash has been mentioned enough that I need to try it. But I’m also wanting to get my hands on that Too Faced system. Looks like it would be right up my alley.

  3. Lisa N. says:

Great recommendations! I’ll have to check them out.

  4. Phyrra says:

Love seeing your picks! I wish fiber mascaras didn’t irritate my eyes.

  5. MarciaF says:

Super picks. I do better with TF Better than Sex than with Better than False Lashes but they are both great ones.

  6. Nancy says:

I still need to try Roller Lash (next Ulta trip). And Estee Lauder mascaras don’t get enough love–I’ve used Sumptuous for years, and before that More Than Mascara!

  7. I’ve never tried the EL Turbolash, I’ll have to now!

  8. I have the same lashes you do, but I have to use waterproof masacara or my lashes uncurl. Nothing will hold the curl. So my favorites are Diorshow by Christian Dior and Miss Manga by L’Oreal both waterproof of course. They are amazing!

  9. Stephanie says:

Some of my favs too, yay! I’ve been eyeing the TF one, no pun intended, but usually need a WP version to hold a curl. Does this or RollerLash flake or smudge at all? Some days I’d rather deal with combing out clumps than redoing my whole eye due to smudges.

  10. Stephanie says:

P.s. My other other absolute favs besides the CG and L’oreal for DS is UD Perversion with the Subversion primer and Benefit They’re Real, neither which are WP but don’t give me issues so I’m hopeful for Roller Lash, forgot I got a sample in Birchbox last month, duh.

  11. Pammy says:

Whoo-hoo for Clump Crusher! That was my pick, too! :)

  12. Karen says:

Great review! I’m excited to try the TooFaced Better than False Lashes! Thanks!!

  13. Sydney says:

Clump Crusher has been a staple mascara in my collection pretty much ever since it came out. It’s my go-to everyday one just because it’s so easy and I have zero issues with flaking or smudging. I haven’t tried any vibrating mascaras or applied fibres, but if one happened to come my way I probably wouldn’t say no to giving it a go!

  14. Georgia says:

Can you suggest a foolproof mascara that is also waterproof?

  15. Merlin says:

My favorite mascara is “hypnose Star” by Lâncome… I have naturally long lashes, and I think this mascara is the one that gives me the best overall effect. I don´t wear it everyday because it is expensive, (it costs about US$60 here).
