It's A Neon, Neon World With Essie & Orly

As my favorite nail color queen, Rihanna, has already shown us, bright, bold, in-your-face shades are what's hot right now. She's been spotted wearing orange, teal, purple, etc. and even though she's driving the bandwagon other young celebs are jumping on board. Take Lindsay Lohan for example. She wore a hot pink to match her prom-tastic dress at her 22nd birthday party and was caught lighting up (don't do it!) with glowing orange tips.

To feed your need for neon, Essie and Orly have hit us with a one-two punch of bright, four color collections for Summer.

The Essie Neons are quite a departure for the usually subdued brand. They tend to target the conservative, classic nail fanatic. I give Essie two thumbs up for addressing the trend. Unfortunately I have to give a thumbs up/thumbs down to the formula. While half the shades (Mini Shorts & Short Shorts) were OK, the others (Bermuda Shorts & Shorty Pants) were pretty nightmarish. As expected, the neon pigments cause these polishes to dry matte but for some reason they don't smooth out easily. You have to put in some work to avoid an uneven texture. But the colors, love them! Mini Shorts is definitely my favorite.

Orly High Voltage is a mixture of saucy shimmers and punchy cremes. The gold shimmer in Heat Wave is captivating. As soon as I picked up the bottle, I had to have it on my tips. It's really a stand out lacquer for me. Charged Up is a nice grape but it's also the only polish I had application issues with. I needed three coats to get even, full coverage. And if I were picking a hot reddish pink, Hot Shot would be my choice. It's way more vibrant in person, somewhat shocking.

Chanel Robertson Boulevard Nail Colour Collection

When I was in LA last month, I desperately wanted to stop by the new Chanel boutique on Robertson Boulevard but time wasn't on my side. The reason for my desperation... the Robertson Boulevard limited edition Nail Colour Collection. Sold exclusively at the Robertson boutique from now until the online launch in July, this collection was created by Peter Philips, the new Global Creative Director of CHANEL Makeup.

Based on the bold pop art imagery, I wasn't expecting the slight softness I saw in the shades I tested. It's this quality that makes them very wearable, even for Chanel's more conservative clientele. As expected, the lacquers applied flawlessly and with excellent pigmentation, I barely needed two coats to reach bottle color. At $25 a bottle, they better.

Rodeo Drive is a warm grapey purple with subtle silver shimmer. In the sun it reminds me of the cartoon character Grape Ape. Of all the polishes in this collection, Rodeo Drive was the one I most looked forward to seeing so I'm glad it lived up to my expectations.

L.A. Sunset is a creamy melon orange with a high gloss factor. I wouldn't classify it as a bright per se but it's definitely bold and summery. A perfect pedicure shade.

With the popularity of yellow polish this season it's no surprise to see one included in this collection. However, I was surprised at how sweet and sexy L.A. Sunrise looked on Selma Blair's tips in InStyle's June edition. No mustard or neon here, just a gorgeous lemon sorbet. I plan to order it the day of the online release.

China Glaze Summer 2008 - INK

Tattoos are a controversial topic. You either love or hate them. They're regarded as both beautiful and tacky, depending on who you ask. But no matter what your opinion is, tattoos are extremely personal; a memorial, an artistic expression, a memento of a wild escapade, a drunken regret, a terrible reminder of past events or loves. INK includes six bold new shades, a set of nail decals and rhinestones, a black nail art lacquer with fine tipped brush, a limited edition bottle of their yummy smelling Orange Cuticle Oil AND the six existing neons from the WOW collection. Now that's a lot of neon.A quick word about the finish. As with other neons I've used, these all dry to a semi-matte finish. It must have something to do with the type of pigment used to create neon shades. So if you're looking for high gloss you'll have to add a shiny top coat. Therefore I've shown all the lacquers with two coats of color on the nail and no top coat; exceptions are noted.

Blue Sparrow is a royal blue peppered with light blue glitter. The glitter leaves a gritty feel to the dried polish so between that and the matte finish you really need to use a coat of a thick glossy top coat to bring out the lacquer's true brilliance. I'm showing you the color without top coat but I included an up close swatch with a coat of Seche Vite.Celtic Sun is a neon yellow with a hint of green undertones. The polish is shown with three coats on the nail yet the smile line still shows through. I personally prefer a more lemony yellow. This color has a very 80s retro feel to me. It's a shade right out of the Wham! Wake Me Up Before You Go Go video.Japanese Koi is the shade of a perfectly ripe tangerine. It's got a slightly pink base that keeps it from being day-glo orange.With it's hot pink base Rose Among Thorns is no average rose. I found this image of the beautiful Cerise Rose and thought this could have been the inspiration for the shade. Sacred Heart is a dusty red that is unlike any red I own. There's something about the satin finish on this one that reminds me of the skin on cherries. Odd reference I know, but it keeps popping in my mind. Flying Dragon is my personal favorite from the collection. It is a deep purple that has a reddish tone to it in person. The red and blue glitter really makes this polish unique. Like I mentioned above, the finish is my only real issue with both glitters. For some reason this seems to be a bigger problem with Flying Dragon. According to a rep for China Glaze it is the unfortunate downside of blending neon with glitter. Their suggestion, two coats of Seche Vite to avoid a rough finish. MAC Fafi Polishes

OK I'll admit it, I didn't have a clue who or what a Fafi was when I first heard rumors of this collection from MAC. I guess I'm old and out of touch that way. That doesn't mean I didn't drool over the collection anyway. I know people are waiting on pins and needles for the Heatherette collection. Some even skipping over Fafi to save money for it but I'm telling you, you're missing out.

For those of you joining me in the Fafi-clueless realm, Fafi is a French graffiti artist who creates strong, sexy, playful female characters. She even gave singer Lily Allen the Fafinette treatment in the Mark Ronson video, Oh My God.



I was at my freestanding MAC store the day Fafi released and I went gaga over the Fafi Eyes 2 palette and Strawbaby lipstick. You know I'm a sucker for anything green so You're Fresh (the light green shadow) had me at "Hello!" btw if you own Strawbaby, go pick up the new Viva Glam VI SE gloss. It looks phenom over it and you get to help an amazing cause in the process.

So now on to the polishes. MAC released two shades with the Fafi collection, Boom and Girls Will Be Girls. Unfortunately the MAC website is sold out of both lacquers so I suggest calling your local MAC counters to find them. Both polishes applied fairly well, I just had to really wipe my brush off to avoid pooling because the formula is a bit more fluid than I'm used to.

Girls Will Be Girls is a peachy pink due to the ribbons of gold shimmer running throughout. For those of you from the MUA nail board, it's a very Nikki shade. With two coats it was almost entirely opaque but I could still see a bit of my tip color underneath. It dries to a semi-matte finish with no top coat applied.

Boom is described on the MAC website as an eggplant shade but to me it's more of a deep fuchsia. I've heard comparisons to OPI's Jewel of India mentioned but I don't own that one to show you. The shimmer is apparent but not gaudy and the shade is so well pigmented. Even though it's not the graple I anticipated, it's still very pretty and wearable. I can already picture it as a pedi shade this summer.

Rescue Beauty Lounge for Spring

You read my swooning over Rescue Beauty Lounge Under The Stars, well now I'm practically drooling over their Spring collection. Why? Hello? Green! Do I need to say anything more?

RBL's Spring collection pulls its inpiration straight from the bold jewel tones and brights seen on Lanvin's runway. Alber Elbaz chose cobalt, green, yellow, red and violet to showcase his designs and Ji Baek has translated that to nail fashion.



RECYCLE is a deep blackish emerald green. This color makes your nails looks like precious jewelry.

PURPLE HAZE, a vivid violet, provides the perfect sour counterpoint to all those sweet garden prints.

YELLOW FEVER, a mouth-puckering lemon, will brighten up summer whites, and neutral shades of navy, khaki and olive.

And finally, a Lanvin dress inspired the re-launch of CHINOISE, my all-time favorite warm China red lacquer.

RBL polishes retail for $18, which I know is steep. Personally I'd love to get them all but I just can't justify that type of splurging so picking up Recycle will probably be my limit. MAC Fafi Collection

Hey kids! In case you didn't know, MAC's newest collection Fafi hits shelves today. A collaboration with French graffiti artist Fafi, this collection is a girly girl's dream come true. And the packaging is to die for.

I'm heading down to my freestanding MAC today to check out the collection and play with the new nail lacquers.

OPI Holiday in Hollywood: Dazzling Darks & Neutrals

When I think of glitz and glam, my mind immediately drifts to Hollywood, award shows and the red carpet. For Holiday 2007 OPI takes us there with the Holiday in Hollywood Collection. It includes two distinct sets of six polishes: Dazzling Darks & Neutrals and Glamour Reds.

The Dazzling Darks & Neutrals are up first. The Glamour Reds are soon to follow.

Stars in My Eyes is a semi-sheer sparkly silver. What you see below is two thin coats. I'm sure a third coat would make it completely opaque. As I was applying Stars in My Eyes and the majority of the sparklers in this collection I noticed a great multi-colored shimmer in the lacquer but it doesn't appear on the nail. Instead this shade has a slightly pinkish cast and amazing depth. It dries semi-matte so if you really want to put on the glitz, add a super shiny top coat.Hollywood Blonde is my surprise of the collection. I totally didn't expect to like, let alone love, this shade. From the few pics I'd seen of it online, it looked like a blah nude. Wow was I wrong. A glistening nudish pink semi-sheer, this is my kind pale. The gold shimmer gives it depth and a fairy dust quality. I would totally rock this on my tips or toes for a holiday party. I love when a polish blows my expectations out of the water.I'd Like To Thank... is described by OPI as a "copper shimmer." I don't know what Suzi has been smoking but I see no copper here. I'd Like To Thank is a duo-chrome; a shade that changes from one shade to another depending on the lighting. This one changes from a mid-tone peachy pink a deep golden rose thanks to the magical gold metallic shimmer. This is a shade I'd say is more suited to warm skin tones. The only real downside of this color is that the metallic quality made my brush strokes more apparent.My Big Break has the same consistency and duo chrome effect as I'd Like To Thank. And the same visible brush stroke issue but it's not nearly as visible. There is a small amount of green shimmer in the formula that shows up on the nail at certain angles. Overall it's a lovely berry rose shade that leans towards a deep lilac depending on the light.Have You Seen My Limo? gets the prize for most unique. Yet another duo-chrome, the deep grape base has silver and green shimmer that allows the shade to transform from reddish purple to a dark silvery plum. I really hope OPI adds this to their permanent Classic Collection.Who Are You Wearing? is a tough color to accurately capture. I must have shot 40+ images of it and I still had to add swatch shots from other images to give you an idea of how truly cool this polish is. When I first saw online swatches of it I thought it was just another blue, like OPI Ink or Russian Navy but, oh no it's so much more! The final duo-chrome in this collection, Who Are You Wearing? has a red shimmer that only appears in warm indoor lighting. Otherwise it's a battle between the blue shimmer and the purple base as to which color you'll see. The purple being the hardest to capture digitally. This is a shade you MUST see for yourself.The Holiday In Hollywood collection is available now at professional salons, including Ulta, Trade Secret, Regis, Pure Beauty, JCPenney, Dillard’s, Beauty First, and Beauty Brands.

MAC Fall 2007

I wish I had been able to share these shades with you before they sold out on MAC's website. All this moving stuff is slowing me down. I didn't expect nail lacquers to be the only products from the Smoke Signals and Blue Storm collections to sell out (with the exception of one lipglass). Though considering how gorgeous they are, it's not overly surprising.

Being the bargain hunter that I am I generally don't look to MAC for my polish at $10/bottle but, I can't resist a pretty color. Which is why I covet my bottles of Vin Goth, Blue Sprinkles, Rose Topping and Tiger Tiger. And why I have a drawer filled with blue, green and purple MAC shadows even though I rarely wear makeup other than my everyday neutral look.

I have to thank the lovely and generous Julia from All About The Pretty for offering to send her samples of these four new lacquers to me.

First up, the Blue Storm shades.

Whirlwind is glorious. Even more so in person. There is no way to capture this incredible shade and do it justice. If you can still find this at your local MAC counter, buy it!! Even if you don't wear blues or greens, BUY IT!! It applies like a dream, has amazing shimmer and fire and is completely swoon-worthy.

Rainy Day is what I'd call a "great concept, poor execution". A beautiful stormy blue-gray is right up my alley. But making it a metallic chrome instead of a shimmer like Whirlwind was a mistake in my opinion. The application and it's finish filled with brush strokes disappointed me. This is a case where layering could save this beautious shade. I'll have to play with some combos.

Now on to Smoke Signals.

When I first read that MAC was coming out with a black with red shimmer I thought here we go, they're jumping on the Lubu Heels, RBL Revamp bandwagon. I've never been so happy to be wrong. Why Wildfire is described as having red shimmer, I'll never know. It's actually a plum shimmer that turns this black based polish into a sexy deep purple on the nail.

Nocturnelle is a repromote that originally debuted with the Nocturnelle collection in October 2006, right in the middle of the black polish craze. For a black creme, Nocturnelle represents well. It's highly pigmented, glossy and smooth. But, I couldn't in good conscience tell you to go buy Nocturnelle when there are plenty of similar black cremes in your local drugstore that look just as nice. Unless you specifically want MAC's formula, I say skip it.

Customization: Frankenpolish & The Art Of Layering

Ask any beauty junkie and we'll admit, no matter how many shades, fragrances or formulations are thrown our way we are still restless for more. Even if we find that perfect product, after a while we'll wish it was a bit more "something". Deeper in color, smoother in feel, slightly more floral, etc. Let's face, it we're just never satisfied.

As we've learned from magazines, makeup artists and our fellow product junkies, beauty is like Burger King; we can have it our way. All it takes is a little customizing. Whether it's layering your favorite perfumes to create a signature scent, mixing your moisturizer in with your foundation to make it sheer and dewy or blending eight different shadows to achieve that perfect smokey eye we love to alter and combine our favorite products.

In the world of lacquer it's no different. When we can't find the color we want we become kids again, mixing lacquer like we used to mix our finger paints. It's all about experimenting, letting your imagination go and relying on our childhood art lessons about the color wheel. Say it with me folks, yellow and blue make green. Now I'm having Ziploc commercial flashbacks.

There are two methods of customizing polish:

• Layering - Using multiple layers of different colors to create the desired shade
• Mixing - Combining two or more lacquers in a bottle (aka Frankenpolish)

First let's discuss the easiest way to customize your color, layering. It's very no muss, no fuss. The only real trick is making sure the edges of each layer line up. If you have a shade that is too light or dark, layer it over white or black. Is your polish to sheer? Layer it over a similar hued opaque formula or black. Everything looks more intense over black. Love the shade of your chrome or metallic finish polish but hate the brush strokes? Add a sheer on top to achieve a smoother finish. Here are some examples from my own experiments.

I was so excited when I got China Glaze Kaleidoscope Him Out and He's Going In Circles because not only are they holographic but they're blue and green holos. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that the green and blue made enough of an impact.

So I layered them over opaque creme lacquers and pow! Instant intensity.
Here's an example of how I combated brush strokes in a metallic finish. I love the color of China Glaze Open Sky but the finish left something to be desired. So I turned to a holo for help. Adding a layer of OPI Blue Moon Lagoon didn't alter the beauty of Open Sky, it just added a little bling and a smoother look.

These two were just for fun. I love my greens but a girl can never have enough options.

Now on to the science project that is the Frankenpolish.

My first try at making my own polish was to mix MAC pigment with clear lacquer. Mixing pigments can be a lot of work but if you have a gorgeous shade that would look great on your nails, it's worth it. I buy Milani clear polish but others like using Sally Hansen Insta Dri. I add 1/4 tsp. of pigment at a time and mix, mix, mix before I test it on the nail. Just keep adding pigment until you've reached the desired opacity. If you can, add a couple mixing balls because the pigment will settle out when not in use.

Here are the results of my first ever pigment mix. This is MAC Entremauve in Milani Crystal Clear lacquer. The pink sparkles in Entremauve really pop as a polish.

The other method for mixing your own polish is to combine different lacquers to create a new shade. The true Frankenpolish.

Zoya Holiday 2007 - Utopia

Releasing in November for the holiday season, the Utopia collection from Zoya is a group of fun, bold shimmering metallic shades that will add a splash of color and glitz to those dreary gray winter days. And All Lacquered Up is fortunate to be the very first to see it, outside of the Art of Beauty family.

This is going to sound silly but whenever I hear the word Utopia I think of that Drew Barrymore movie Ever After. It's a feminist take on the tale of Cinderella and in it the heroine (played by Drew) loves the book Utopia by Thomas More. I still have my copy of Ever After on VHS and even though I haven't had a VHS player hooked up in years, I refuse to get rid of it. I love that movie.

Ok, so either someone at Zoya loves me or green nails is a trend that I didn't see coming. Of all the jewels tones green is the color I least expected to become mainstream. Outside of our small online nail community I've never seen anyone else wearing it. But you certainly won't hear me complaining. Bring on the greens!

My one and only complaint with this collection is the pigmentation. The majority of the lacquers needed three coats to become completely opaque and achieve the bottle shade. Similar to Suvi and Kotori from the Downtown Collection. I wonder if it's because the extra pigment would thicken the formula and Zoya's polish is already thicker than the typical non-Big 3 Free brands.

Austine is a muted brushed gold. On the nail it has the appearance hammered metal and the silver shimmer keeps the color from becoming too peach. Austina is more metallic than shimmery which sets it apart from the other shades in Utopia but thankfully it doesn't affect application.

Tama is the least "me" shade of the bunch. I'm not anti-pink or brights but I feel there's something in this shade that doesn't work with my skin tone. It's a pretty color and definitely more rosy in the sun but it's just not something I would intentionally buy for myself.

Kamilah is luscious crimson shade with a hint of gold shimmer that comes out in sunlight. As you can see in the individual swatch pics of this and some of the other shades, these polishes seem to have a slight duochrome effect. The color doesn't completely change but it's definitely more intense in direct light.

In the bottle Juno looks very much like a duochrome. The polish looks blue all along the edges of the bottle, similar to how Ki looks in the bottle. However on the nail, the blue isn't that apparent which is a shame. A purple/blue duochrome would be amazing. Of all the purples I have, I feel that Juno will make my top 10 for sure, possibly even top 5. It has incredible depth, pigmentation and gloss. If you love purple, get Juno.

Akyra reminds me of a peacock feather. It's not as bright but in the same vein. In the sun the green takes dominance and it's the green that makes Akyra different than Kotori.

I saved the best for last. Irene is a stunning mossy sage green sprinkled with gold shimmer. This green is probably better suited to warm skin tones but a shade this gorgeous should not be limited by skin coloring. In case you haven't guessed, this is my #1 pick from Utopia and a must have for anyone that loves or appreciates the beauty of green polish.

NOTD - Nicole Paparazzi Plum

I love going to see my nail tech. She has this amazing wall of discontinued polish from Nicole, OPI and Creative. It's a total treasure trove. It's where I found my bottle of OPI Rainforest. There is this one Creative polish that I lust after. It's called Amazon and it's a stunning emerald green. Some day it will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

I went to see her the other night and found this beauty on the wall. Nicole Paparazzi Plum is deep deep plum with subtle shimmer. I compared it to my swatch of OPI Lincoln Park At Midnight and they are very very close. So close that you don't need to hunt this one down or pay crazy eBay prices for it.

I really enjoy doing my own nails and taking the time to do them well but there's something so relaxing about getting a manicure. I'm not gonna lie, when I do my nails, it takes me a while. It has taken me quite some time to get over my clumsiness and improve my polish application. So, watching a pro is fun for me. Every time I see her, I pick up some new. Either how much polish she leaves on the brush or exactly where on the nail she starts applying. Every little bit helps make me better.

OPI Designer Series Comparison Pics

Here are some comparion pics of the new Designer Series polishes. Just trying to save you all a few dollars in case you already own some of these.


To my eye, Amethyst is a bit more pink than Sand-erella and has way more holo bling.

Glamour is truly unique and I couldn't think of a color combination that would come close. The burple (bluish-purple) base is very unique.

Passion is more rose toned than Elegance. I thought for sure that they'd be twins. Passion is definitely a more muted pink than Elegance. As much as I was initially unimpressed with it, I'm now happy to have it based on this comparison.

Desire is Design's darker, more bronze, winterish sibling. Because of the amount of holographic shimmer in Desire, it's hard to catagorize it as a warm or cool color. The base is definitely warm but when the light isn't causing the holo to show off it's rainbow beauty, the shimmer looks silver.

For anyone that hasn't tried this line, the glitter is as smooth as the diamond dust formula is to apply. I love that it's easy to remove and doesn't give you that nails on a chalkboard feeling as you rub it off, like with a lot of glitter polishes.

OPI Designer Series *New Colors*

I have to leave for Columbus but I wanted to leave you all with some new pretties to stare at. There are the new Designer Series polishes from OPI and they're HOLOGRAPHIC!! Just like the original 12. Love them! Glamour will definitely be the first one I use.

NOTD - China Glaze Steppin Out

It was feeling the need for something fun and this fit the bill. I have made myself a promise to use every color I own before repeating so it was Steppin' Out's turn.

I received this color as a gift and I'd never heard of or seen it before. It's just lovely. If anyone knows when this beauty was released or with what collection, please post or email me.

The metallic shimmer gives this reddish-purple a foil-like finish. You don't get a high gloss sheen from it but it's not matte either.

I'm staying with the Stickey Sandwich method, it seems to be working really well. I was lazy earlier this week and didn't remove my Lippmann Hit Me With Your Best Shot mani until Wednesday night. So a whole week went by and it honestly didn't look any more worn than the pic I took on Saturday. The only exception being a piece of my thumbnail that was ripped off when I reached to hold a door open for some rude, unappreciative people. Not even the slightest acknowledgment. Blech!

NYX Cosmetics

As I was reorganizing my stash I came across my small collection of NYX polishes. It's been so long since I've worn any of them, I almost forgot I had them. NYX isn't the easiest line to come across. I've read about people finding them in stores but I've never seen them in person. I order mine directly from NYX's website.

If you never tried an NYX polish, I highly recommend them. They have a huge color range; brights, sheers, glitters, pales, etc. The bottles have a wide brush, similar to OPI's, that makes application so much better. In fact, I believe that they had the wide brush way before OPI introduced theirs.

If you order directly from NYX, you will only be charged $3/bottle, not the $4 posted on the site. Shipping is fast and very reasonable. I ordered 10 polishes and only paid 6 dollars and some change for shipping.

The My Diva's Closet website also sells NYX and they have MUCH better pictures than NYX does. They charge $4/bottle so I only visit for the pictures. Here is my NYX collection.
