I was still enjoying my weekend away when the BET Awards aired but now that I’m catching up on all that I missed, I couldn’t resist a little celeb nail watchin’. I’m hoping to catch a re-airing of the show or video clips online of the Michael Jackson tributes but for now let’s focus on the tips. The biggest nail trend of the night… Minx! As I said when I reviewed Minx last December, they’re great for special occasions and more and more celebrities seem to be embracing them for red carpet events. Can you guess who wore Minx? I’m sure one name immediately comes to mind. Check out the nail winners and losers of the night, after the jump!

Monica, Letoya Luckett, Keri Hilson and Beyonce were all spotted with Silver Lightening nails and seeing Keri Hilson’s pic with her BET Award makes me wonder if it was intended to match the trophy, should they win.

Happy Friday kids! One more Golden Globe wrap up then I’m done, swear. If it wasn’t my favorite award show of the year, I wouldn’t be so gaga. Of course the Grammy’s are coming up and you KNOW there will be at least a few crazy nail looks on that red carpet. Can’t WAIT! Anywho, the biggest nail trends of the night were red and vampy shades. Now I haven’t seen all the films of 2008 but compared to the ones I did, Mamma Mia is definitely my favorite of the year. My BFF turned me into an ABBA fanatic back in my late teens when he would play songs from ABBA Gold while we hung out after work. And I rushed off to see the stage version of Mamma Mia when it came to the Cleveburg, dancing in the isles with the crowd at the end.

Needless to say, when I had the opportunity to see an advanced screening of the movie version of Mamma Mia last summer, I was giddy with excitement. Even in a room full of media folk there was laughter, clapping and cheering including full out applause at the end. Truly fantastic! The biggest surprise of the movie… the gorgeous and talented Amanda Seyfried. Who knew this girl that I’d only seen playing a ditzy blonde (Mean Girls), a dead BFF (Veronica Mars) and a mormon teen (Big Love) had such a voice? She’s pretty magical in the role, especially with Meryl Streep by her side.

Well, on the red carpet at last night’s Golden Globes she certainly glowed all on her own. Amanda was a vision with beautiful berry lips, heavily lined eyes and deep burgundy tips. Even though I’m not a matchy-matchy girl when it comes to nails, it works on her.

Last night’s Golden Globes ceremony was all about Kate Winslet as she swept the film acting categories and rocked the red carpet. I’m not gonna lie, I teared up when she won her second statue of the night. For someone as accomplished and talented as Kate, she was so humble and sweet. And I laughed my butt off when Ricky Gervais said, “Well done Winslet, I told you, do a Holocaust movie and the awards come, didn’t I?” which is a reference to her stint on his short lived but HILARIOUS HBO series Extras.

Andy: I’m an actor as well. If there’s a line going in this film, I’d love to be part of this also, because I’d just like to say you doing this is so commendable. You know, using your profile to keep the message alive about the Holocaust.

Kate Winslet: My God I’m not doing it for that. I mean, I don’t think we need another film about the Holocaust, do we? It’s like, how many have there been? No, we get it, it was grim, move on. No, I’m doing this because I’ve noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust, guaranteed an Oscar. I’ve been nominated four times. Never won. The whole world is going, “why hasn’t Winslet won one?”

Andy: Def—yeah.

Kate Winslet: That’s it. That’s why I’m doing it. Schindler’s bloody List. The Pianist. Oscars coming out of their arse.

Seriously, if you haven’t seen the episode, you MUST MUST MUST rent it just to see her give advice about phone sex while dressed as a nun.

Getting back to the nails…

Kate worked with celebrity manicurist and nail polish guru, Deborah Lippmann who chose Rhapsody in White to complete her overall look. The result…absolutely stunning.

“We don’t say it out loud but I am always picturing my client holding the award so finding a shade that wont detract is paramount,” says Deborah who styled the nails of Golden Globe winner Kate Winslet. Deborah used Rhapsody In White on Kate’s hands and feet to complement her YSL dress.

Best Actress Oscar winner Marion Cotillard was a nail standout on the red carpet. While most of the ladies played it safe in sheers and neutrals, I couldn’t help but notice Marion’s metallic tips. Celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann got her nails camera ready for the big event.

The shade Deborah chose; Believe, a gold with silver and bronze shimmer. It’s a very multidimensional shade. Believe is actually one of my mom’s favorite shades. I gave it to her because she is a huge Cher fan and Deborah created the shade with Cher.


The color looked very silver on the red carpet but you can see below that it is clearly gold.

I’ve been so starved for an awards show red carpet, I can’t even stand it. Between the lack of new episodes of my favorite shows and non-existent televised red carpet, my Tivo and I have had small shaking fits. The DTs are rough. So THANK YOU Screen Actors Guild for fulfilling the craving.

With the SAG Awards being the only big red carpet night for the television ladies until fall, they rocked it out of the park. Icy silver metallic and a full range of blue gowns were the standout trends of the night and there were equally hot nails to match. The old standard red and the tail end of the fall vampy trend made an appearance as well.

Red – Mindy Kaling from The Office looked classic with her red tips, even though I think the makeup is a bit heavy. Oh and if you’ve never read her blog, Things I’ve Bought That I Love, you are missing out.
Vampy – Missy Pyle is one of my favorite comedic character actresses; such a scene stealer. And her dark wine tips add the right amount of drama to her smokey eye and nude lip.Even though her character on Samantha Who? has such a sweet, grown up Shirley Temple look, Christina Applegate turned it out with glamour gal style.Blue – OK so Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s dress isn’t the most flattering thing she’s ever worn but I’m diggin’ it’s dark blue-green shade next to her navy tips.I love getting to see Jenna Fischer all glammed up and she did Pam proud accenting that gorgeous frock with silver accessories and deep blue nails.Pearly White/Silver – Eva Longoria Parker’s look isn’t groundbreaking; don’t get me wrong, she always looks stunning but, has a very signature look. What I did love… the shimmery opalescent nail shade. How adorable is Brittany Snow? Was anyone else a fan of American Dreams? Her dress may be all woman but her face is still very “girl next door.” House‘s Olivia Wilde such has come a long way since her days playing Marissa Cooper’s love interest on The O.C. Amanda Bynes is one tall drink of water and she always looks beautiful. This look is classic, elegant but still fun.Ah Jan, you scorned vixen. How I love you, you big ball of crazy. Melora Hardin was built for red carpet gowns and even though I’ve praised her love of vampy nails in the past, I think the light shimmery shade she’s wearing is perfectly subtle.Now I am generally a french manicure hater because I feel they look fake and tacky but take notes girls because Andrea Bowen has shown us all how a french can look classy and natural.

Just to clarify, I am NOT a country music fan (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but that damn Carrie Underwood song, Before He Cheats, does get stuck in my head. Regardless, I couldn’t help but check out the Country Music Awards arrivals to see what the gals were wearing on their nails. I’ll admit that I had a little prejudice going in, expecting to see french manicures and pale nails everywhere but much to my surprise, it was vampy night at the CMAs.

And was it just me or did the rest of the red carpet look like the American Idol rejects show (Carrie Underwood excluded)? Phil Stacey, Bucky Covington, Kellie Pickler… What, no Sanjaya?? Certainly the hospitable people of the south could throw him some love.

Unfortunately, all the stylists in the world can’t prevent every celebrity fashion/beauty misstep. And there were a few last night.

Much to my dismay, I just can’t give a thumbs up to the lavender tips. It’s just too much. Though I’m overjoyed for her Emmy win. She’s had an amazing year.
There’s no denying that Patricia Heaton has an incredible body and fantastic sense of humor. And I usually love her fashion choices but for me, that raisin nail shade detracts from the overall look.

I don’t even know what to say about this other than, who the hell is Phoebe Price and why couldn’t I escape seeing pictures of her everywhere? Phoebe, go back to the drawing board and try try again.

As much as Seacrest bugs me with his multi-media domination, I continue to tune into E! News because of Giuliana. I was so bitter when they removed her as co-anchor a few years ago. At least the powers that be regained their senses and put her back where she belongs. Again this is a case of pale nails that work. I know Giuliana isn’t afraid of color so when she sports a light tip, it’s on purpose. With her daring detailed dress, flowing hair and massive amount of hand and wrist bling, it would look out of balance to wear a dark polish.
