CND at NYFW – Checkerboard Nails at Nicole Miller Spring 2012

With the rise in popularity of “scotch tape manicures” amongst the DIY nail art fanatics, I see a lot of checkered nail styles roll by on my Tumblr. So I was quite thrilled to see this popular look pop up on the runway. CND injected bright pops of color and pattern at Nicole Miller’s Spring 2012 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

For Nicole Miller, Wanda Ruiz crafted glam rock checkered manicures using CND Colour in Raspberry Parfait and a custom mixed blue comprised of CND Colours in Anchor Blue, Dark Ruby, Eclectic Purple and added blue pigment. Nails were finished with one layer of Ice Blue Shimmer Effect.

CND Says: Create this look at home by doing a vertical sweep of pink down your nail, and do the same with a sweep of blue so each half of the nail is covered with a color. Then go over with each color for the opposite corners. Top all nails with Ice Blue Shimmer for a dazzling finish.

If your hand isn’t steady enough to hand paint straight lines of color, create checkers utilizing scotch tape. Check out the tutorial on Chloe’s Nails for great tips on how to create this look.

What do you think of Checkerboard nails? Do you like the blue and pink combo? Do you have any great tricks for DIYing checkered nails?

Runway or Everyday? – butter LONDON’s Nail Polish Rings at Vena Cava

Last season we saw nails elevated from accessories to full on jewelry at Diego Binetti. This season at Vena Cava, butter LONDON‘s Nonie Creme is pushing the boundaries, bringing nail polish to a whole new territory; skin.  That’s right, she’s taking over “real estate” from the skin and by creating jewelry with nail polish applied directly on fingers.

Nail art savant Melissa from The Daily Nail has extended her designs on to the skin in the past but this is the first time I’ve seen the actual nails ignored entirely.  Nonie applied “finger bands” of color to two fingers on each model, some single, some double, and a simple coat of clear Hard Wear top coat to the nails.

To replicate the look follow Nonie’s tips: Start with clean, dry skin.  Swipe with remover.  Start below the first knuckle.  Only paint a few fingers or else it will look too tribal. Allow 15 minutes to dry and expect 24 hours of wear.

Get the Vena Cava look using butter LONDON Royal Navy, Scoundrel, Tramp Stamp, and Union Jack Black. The orange, Flouro Orange, is not yet in production.  butter LONDON polishes retail for $14/ea and are available online at butterLONDON.com and Beauty.com.

My question to you is… is this look runway only or something that could be worn in the everyday world?  Would you apply nail polish on your skin on purpose?  What do you think of the “finger bands” look?

New York Fashion Week is off and running and this season I’ve teamed up with CND to bring you a week of fashion themed giveaways. As one of the foremost authorities on fashion forward nail styles, CND and its co-founder Jan Arnold have helped make nail color as much a part of each season’s fashion stories as the clothes themselves.

Beginning today I will be sharing the backstage scoop on the looks created by the CND team for each day of Fashion Week.  I will select my favorite and put the polishes used to create that look up for grabs in a daily giveaway.

Tune in every day after 8am EST for your chance to win.  Just comment on that day’s post before Midnight EST to be entered in the giveaway.  Sound fun?

Random NYFW SS 2011 Moments

nyfw-ss11-random My week in NYC was such a whirlwind that I’m still processing it all.  It goes by in a flash and then I’m standing at the airport with a camera full of images and no clue what I saw.  It always takes me a few days after I get back to decompress and put all the pieces together.

So while I’m compiling my backstage coverage, I thought I’d share some pics from the rest of my trip.  You know, those hours when I’m not crammed in a tiny space with every beauty blogger, editor, model, makeup artist, hairstylist, manicurist and publicist in NYC.  A lot happens in those off hours including a few reality star sightings, meet-ups with friends and fun nights out.
