The Brights are back everyone! OPI is adding to their ever so popular Brights series with a set of 6 vivid creme polishes dubbed the Mod About Brights collection.

Yet again I'm getting giddy with delight over a fab looking green hitting the mass market. You know the frankeners on MUA will be adding black to Green-wich Village to try and duplicate RBL Recycle. And a royal blue creme... catch me as I swoon. If these cremes are as fantabulous as the ones from India, I'll be in heaven. I've been on such a creme kick lately. Between that and my recent pink love you would think I had a polish lobotomy.

China Glaze Summer 2008 - INK
Tattoos are a controversial topic. You either love or hate them. They're regarded as both beautiful and tacky, depending on who you ask. But no matter what your opinion is, tattoos are extremely personal; a memorial, an artistic expression, a memento of a wild escapade, a drunken regret, a terrible reminder of past events or loves. INK includes six bold new shades, a set of nail decals and rhinestones, a black nail art lacquer with fine tipped brush, a limited edition bottle of their yummy smelling Orange Cuticle Oil AND the six existing neons from the WOW collection. Now that's a lot of neon.
A quick word about the finish. As with other neons I've used, these all dry to a semi-matte finish. It must have something to do with the type of pigment used to create neon shades. So if you're looking for high gloss you'll have to add a shiny top coat. Therefore I've shown all the lacquers with two coats of color on the nail and no top coat; exceptions are noted.
Blue Sparrow is a royal blue peppered with light blue glitter. The glitter leaves a gritty feel to the dried polish so between that and the matte finish you really need to use a coat of a thick glossy top coat to bring out the lacquer's true brilliance. I'm showing you the color without top coat but I included an up close swatch with a coat of Seche Vite.
Celtic Sun is a neon yellow with a hint of green undertones. The polish is shown with three coats on the nail yet the smile line still shows through. I personally prefer a more lemony yellow. This color has a very 80s retro feel to me. It's a shade right out of the Wham! Wake Me Up Before You Go Go video.
Japanese Koi is the shade of a perfectly ripe tangerine. It's got a slightly pink base that keeps it from being day-glo orange.
With it's hot pink base Rose Among Thorns is no average rose. I found this image of the beautiful Cerise Rose and thought this could have been the inspiration for the shade. 
Sacred Heart is a dusty red that is unlike any red I own. There's something about the satin finish on this one that reminds me of the skin on cherries. Odd reference I know, but it keeps popping in my mind. 
Flying Dragon is my personal favorite from the collection. It is a deep purple that has a reddish tone to it in person. The red and blue glitter really makes this polish unique. Like I mentioned above, the finish is my only real issue with both glitters. For some reason this seems to be a bigger problem with Flying Dragon. According to a rep for China Glaze it is the unfortunate downside of blending neon with glitter. Their suggestion, two coats of Seche Vite to avoid a rough finish.

China Glaze Spring 2008 - Ecollection
It seems like "going green" and focusing on the environment is on everyone's minds and it is affecting every aspect of our daily lives. And if it's not everyone, it certainly should be. Now more and more beauty companies are starting to get on the "green" train and China Glaze is no exception. This Spring they introduce the ecollection a set of polishes with an earth conscious theme that comes in recycled paper packaging.
To preserve the beauty of our world's colors, tread lightly and leave only footprints. In Blahniks or Birkenstocks, going green is always fashionable.
Overall I'm a fan of this collection. I'll admit the grouping is odd in terms of shade until you read the names and reflect on the theme. So let's talk formula. As you may already know this new Big 3 Free formula that was introduced last summer is thicker than the old formula and therefore requires a bit of getting used to. I've found that it applies best in two medium coats. Too thin and it pulls/drags on the nail, too thick and you get bubbles. All the manicures pictured below were done with two medium coats of lacquer.
Tree Hugger reminds me of a green apple but with multi-tonal green shimmer. It's like the perfect spring shade for me. Just looking at it makes me happy. I could go on and on about how gorgeous this polish is but it really speaks for itself.
Solar Power can only be described as "taxi cab yellow." It is a loud and proud shade and with the yellow trend popping back up for spring/summer Solar Power, with it's golden shimmer, fits right in. I have to admit that I prefer the jelly finish of last year's Yell-O-Neil from the Surf collection. Simply because its glass like look is so completely unique.
Shower Together is a slightly lighter version of the oh so popular Aqua Baby from the Patent Leather collection. It's like Aqua Baby and For Audrey had a baby which makes this blue green stunner is a color I could just swim in. Doesn't it look like pool water?
Unplugged isn't a shade I normally think of when I look towards Spring but it adds a nice balance to the collection. A red based brown with ribbons of gold shimmer running throughout, the overall color is that of a deep bronze with flecks of gold.
Hybrid is a pinky beige with silver shimmer. In other lighting it's a dusty nude rose. So hard to describe which is what makes it stand out. Does anyone else think it's similar to Chiaroscuro but without the green shimmer? I'm just not sure I love this on me. What do you think?
Recycle is a shade a lot of us have been longing for. A mid-tone gray creme that reminds me of rubber wire coating. Even though some of the MUA nail girls have franken'd their own gorgeous grays, I love being able to get it without the muss and fuss. Gray is going to be the next big shade in polish, especially in fall so, I'd get this one now before gray becomes a scarce commodity.

Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Fall 2008 Preview
Backstage at the Tracy Reese Fall/Winter 2008 show I had the pleasure of previewing the Fall Sally Hansen Salon line. Tracy Reese collaborated with the wizards at Sally Hansen bring us yet another fabulous fashion inspired collection. According to the reps I met, the team from Sally Hansen sits down with Tracy to review her swatches and takes them back to the R&D department. In turn, they create 60+ shades from which Tracy hand picks the finished collection and names them with her creative team.
Fall 2008 is all about surprising pairings on the Tracy Reese runway: high-tech and natural, metallic and sheer, and rustic and refined are just a few of the bold juxtapositions. It's a collection charged with the forces of nature, the beauty of art, and the power of abstraction. Together Tracy Reese and Sally Hansen translated these concepts into ten rich and dramatic nail lacquers that are as wearable as they are fashionable - on and off the runway.
As I reported earlier, Torrid Bloom was the shade chosen for the "Veiled Nail" runway look. The other colors include; Raven's Wing, Moonstone, Quartz Chameleon, Divinity, The Good Earth, Cruel Heart, Alchemy, Torrid Bloom, Night Lily and Stormy Blue.
I was lucky to bring home a sample bottle of Stormy Blue to test out. It was the shade that called to me the most. You know how I love my blues and Stormy Blue is this amazing metallic steely blue. I heard it being called, "the new navy." With all the grays I've seen coming down the pipe, this shade is the perfect mix of last fall's navy trend and new mid-tone grays. Given it's metallic quality, brush strokes were minimal and the bit of glittery sparkle you see in bright light makes this one a must have for blue lovers.
Moonstone and Raven's Wing were my other immediate favorites. Moonstone, a silvery gray shimmer, and Raven's Wing, a black sparkler, are both high on glitz and very chic. The visible silver glitter in Raven's Wing sets it apart from the black shimmers we've seen in the past.
The Tracy Reese for Sally Hansen Fall collection won't be out for a while but it's always fun having something to look forward to.
OPI Spring 2008 Collection - India
OPI, you don't know this but we've been broken up for some time now. The fighting began when you revamped your formula last spring. The inconsistencies in every collection since Australia has been frustrating. I understand the pressure to go Big 3 Free but sacrificing quality in order to satisfy the protesters was a bad call if you ask me. Of course our fight occurred entirely in my head but I'm sure you'll be happy to know that we've called a truce.
Why the change of heart? Well, two reasons really.
1. You finally delivered a navy blue shimmer that actually looks navy. No purple undertones. Not just another blue-black. Yoga-ta Get This Blue, it's like you knew I needed you.
2. You realized that I was not the only unhappy camper in regards to formula and you found a way to deliver pigmented, streak-free, non-goopy cremes.
The OPI India Collection for Spring 2008 made me remember what it was that caused me to fall for OPI in the first place. How compared to all the drugstore brands of polish I had used, there was a line that applied smooth and even with a beautiful range of colors. My first OPI obsession was the classic; I'm Not Really A Waitress. My latest; Yoga-ta Get This Blue.
With a color range pulled from the fashion and culture of India, this collection is filled with vibrant pinks and reds, rich berries and luxurious metallics. Do I think every shade is utterly unique and rave-worthy? No but let's get real girls. Us hardcore nail fanatics are a finicky group to please. I say formula improvements are a good step. Giving us the next Rainforest would be a fabulous and giant leap.
So this formula I am raving about, is it really that different? I wouldn't testify in a court of law but, to me, there really is a noticeable improvement. I can't find the change in the ingredient list but I'm telling you, something happened. With a couple exceptions, every shade applied like a dream. And disregarding the two sheers, these lacquers are highly pigmented requiring no more than two coats. Each image below was taken without a top coat and only two layers of lacquer.
Black Cherry Chutney - a blackened red with subtle shimmer for depth. In most lighting all you see are a few specs of shimmer and otherwise it's just another almost black berry. The brush on mine has a few bent strands so that affected application. I hope it was just the brush but I can't promise anything.
Charmed by a Snake - a lighter bronze, more appropriate for Spring. The champagne shimmer keeps this shade from being too warm and too Fall. Definitely one of my favorites.
Curry Up Don't Be Late! - I'm not gonna lie, this will be a hard shade to pull off. Brushed yellow gold is too much for my pale skin but, I would think with a faux tan or darker skin tone this shade could really pop. 
ElePhantastic Pink has been creating a buzz before it even hit shelves. It's the shade I've received the most inquiries about. A bold carnation pink creme, this isn't for the demure pink wearer.
Get Me to the Taj on Time - is a safe opalescent semi-sheer. Yes, it applies well but we've seen this before.
I'm Indi-a Mood for Love - a hot pink creme that leans towards blue, giving it a slight purple undertone.
Keys to My Karma is your basic maraschino cherry red creme. This one has a lot of pink in its base and needs two coats to achieve the bottle shade. It's a good staple color but not something you need. Still I'm feeling the urge to pull out my reds again.
Lunch at the Delhi has been dubbed a "coral" but I'm not seeing it. If anything, I think of it as a dusty, muted red. Yes, it's warm and orange based but not the pinky peach I typically think of when I hear coral. Sometimes an OPI description is so far off from what I'm seeing, I wonder if I'm colorblind. What shade do you see?
MonSooner or Later is a tomato red creme. Orange and red combine to create this glossy confection. I can totally see this on toes at the beach.
Moon Over Mumbai - get on the gray train now before it runs you over, leaving you face first in the dust. Of course the uber-chic nail boarders over at Makeup Alley have been frankening their own grays for months now but if you don't want to make your own, here's a nice soft version to ease you into the trend.
Royal Rajah Ruby is the other vampy berry shade included in India. A rich wine shimmer, this shade would have made me take notice had it been a bit lighter. It just doesn't stand out in the crowd. The shimmer adds character but no real charm.
Yoga-ta Get this Blue! - I saved the best for last. I had to keep you scrolling. From the very second I got my hands on this shade I've been talking it up to anyone who would listen. Deeper and richer than Blue My Mind from the 2005 Brights yet lighter than all the 2007 OPI blues, Yoga-ta is everything I've been wanting a navy to be. It's visibly blue in most lighting situations which is something many of the blues that came before it have failed to achieve. In the simplest of terms, it's perfect.

Rescue Beauty Lounge Under The Stars
Rescue Beauty Lounge, the salon and product line, is the creation of the uber-stylish Ji Baek. For Ji her previous life working in the hospitality industry, spending countless hours on her feet in high heels, led to her love of pedicures. But all the salons and spas she encountered were either unsanitary or too high end/high priced.
So being a self proclaimed "germ-o-phobe" and wanting to save her excess cash for shoes, Ji set out on a mission to open a salon dedicated to nail care that was fun, reasonably priced and above all, clean. So in 1998 the first Rescue Beauty opened it's doors. Inside you'll find hospital standards of cleanliness and the Rescue Beauty Lounge line of bath & body products and nail lacquer.
The RBL lacquers have a cult following and until now, I've never had the opportunity to try one. I've only seen beauties like Revamp, Black Russian, Concrete Jungle and Dead Calm in online swatches. So when a nail buddy surprised me with a bottle of my biggest RBL want, Under The Stars, I shrieked.
Under The Stars is a blue-black shimmer. I know, I know, you're groaning already. Not another blue-black. You've seen of ton of them already. If you're not a blue lover and collector this one might not wow you. BUT, and I do mean that to be a big but, what makes Under The Stars unique to me is the gorgeous light blue glitter. It leaves the nail surface with a bit of texture but it's totally worth it.
The formula is of a medium-thick consistency, flows smoothly on the nail and is Big 3 Free. Not only that but it's highly pigmented, requiring only one coat to achieve bottle color.
I normally only test a formula's wear for five days but Under The Stars performed so well that I left it on for seven. I was also just enamoured with the color (and a bit lazy). There was noticeable tip wear, more than I'd normally allow myself to be seen in but, no chips. CND Spring 2008 - Plexi Pop
The sheers are coming! The sheers are coming! Take cover vampy girls for the sheers are a-coming! This spring will be a sheer lover's paradise according to the spring collection previews. You all know I'm not a fan of sheers but I'm going to try my hardest to remain objective.
CND's collection for Spring, Plexi Pop, is sheer-gasm of pinks, peach and aqua with an opaque white cream. If you followed my coverage of the Spring 2008 New York Fashion Week shows, you know that a lot of these colors popped up on the runways of fashion's biggest designers. At the time they were still unnamed but here they are in all their glory.
Clearly Pink - a milky pink sheer, it reminds me of my beloved OPI Passion (not the Designer Series version). It applies streak free and adds a slight hint of creamy pinkness to my nails. The only downside for me is that with my whites being slightly yellowed from dark polish use, Clearly Pink's milkiness didn't help brighten my whites.
Nail Gloss - Is a straight up pink sheer. No milkiness, just a pink tinged clear. It really is like lip gloss for your nails. It reminds me of one of my favorite lip glosses from my early 20s, Bonne Bell Lip d'Votion in Fresh Melon, super glossy with the slightest hint of color.
Plexi Pink - is a pretty hot pink sheer with subtle bluish-purple shimmer that gives the shade some pop. It's more pigmented than the other pinks but still not buildable to opaque.
Retro White - This slightly creamy white was a nightmare for me. I'm not gonna lie, I tried three times to get an even application to show you all and it wasn't happening. The picture below is with three spaced out coats, to allow proper drying, and it was still streaky as all get out. Just look at the massive dragging near my cuticles. I assume that this shade was intended for use in an american manicure but I can't recommend it.
Translucent Tangerine - A glittery peach sheer, this color didn't work for my skin tone but it's really pretty in the bottle. I'm sure warm toned gals would love this. And despite the high glitter content, that polish felt smooth on my nail.
Turquoise Tint - To me, I see this color and immediately think layering. A turquoise sheer just isn't something I'd think of wearing. It looks so unnatural and alien-esque on me. Though the cellophane finish is pretty cool.

A shimmering inky blue, Blue Satin, is a highly pigmented lacquer that flows evenly on the nail. I know Chanel is big on the whole "Satin" naming thing but if it were up to me, I'd name this one Blue Velvet because that's what it reminds me of in the bottle, a snuggly blue velveteen blanket. On the nail this blackened navy is very dark and only shows it's true shimmering brilliance when well lit but that's true of most dark polishes. And in a true moment of serendipity I looked out my window to see sun, actual sun, so I went a little overboard on the swatch pics for you.
Now you know that I am the last person to tell you to run out and plunk down more than $10 on a polish but I can honestly say that, for me, this one is worth it. But please don't buy it just to have it. If you're not a lover of blue polishes, this one won't magically change that. And for all you bargain shoppers, I'm going to work up some comparisons.
The official Chanel release is scheduled for January 2008 but I would get on a waiting list now. As of today you can pre-order Blue Satin on the Neiman Marcus website with an anticipated ship date of December 14th.

There's been much buzz about the next great Chanel polish, Blue Satin, and Style Today has an exclusive first look. Check out their site for additional bottle pics and swatches.
I don't have an official release date yet but I've heard late December or January. I'm sure if you call your local Chanel counter a sales associate can put you on a wait list. I have a feeling this one will sell out fast.
OPI Blue Comparisons
Since navy is such a big color this fall and with OPI putting out three great blues this year, I thought you all might appreciate a little side by side comparison. While I love these dark colors, capturing their true beauty on screen is REALLY difficult but I did my best.
To me, the major differences are:
Russian Navy - has a blue green base, like Glacier Bay Blues, subtle shimmer on the nail and is the closest to an actual navy shade
Who Are You Wearing? - has more purple in it's base, multi-colored blue and red shimmer, looks blue/purple depending on the light and has an overall darker hue
OPI Ink - is the most burple (bluish purple), has the most sparkle and glitz due to the silvery micro-glitter, is the least "blackish-blue"
Which one do you prefer? Or did you just give in and buy all three?
OPI Holiday in Hollywood: Dazzling Darks & Neutrals
When I think of glitz and glam, my mind immediately drifts to Hollywood, award shows and the red carpet. For Holiday 2007 OPI takes us there with the Holiday in Hollywood Collection. It includes two distinct sets of six polishes: Dazzling Darks & Neutrals and Glamour Reds.
The Dazzling Darks & Neutrals are up first. The Glamour Reds are soon to follow.
Stars in My Eyes is a semi-sheer sparkly silver. What you see below is two thin coats. I'm sure a third coat would make it completely opaque. As I was applying Stars in My Eyes and the majority of the sparklers in this collection I noticed a great multi-colored shimmer in the lacquer but it doesn't appear on the nail. Instead this shade has a slightly pinkish cast and amazing depth. It dries semi-matte so if you really want to put on the glitz, add a super shiny top coat.
Hollywood Blonde is my surprise of the collection. I totally didn't expect to like, let alone love, this shade. From the few pics I'd seen of it online, it looked like a blah nude. Wow was I wrong. A glistening nudish pink semi-sheer, this is my kind pale. The gold shimmer gives it depth and a fairy dust quality. I would totally rock this on my tips or toes for a holiday party. I love when a polish blows my expectations out of the water.
I'd Like To Thank... is described by OPI as a "copper shimmer." I don't know what Suzi has been smoking but I see no copper here. I'd Like To Thank is a duo-chrome; a shade that changes from one shade to another depending on the lighting. This one changes from a mid-tone peachy pink a deep golden rose thanks to the magical gold metallic shimmer. This is a shade I'd say is more suited to warm skin tones. The only real downside of this color is that the metallic quality made my brush strokes more apparent.
My Big Break has the same consistency and duo chrome effect as I'd Like To Thank. And the same visible brush stroke issue but it's not nearly as visible. There is a small amount of green shimmer in the formula that shows up on the nail at certain angles. Overall it's a lovely berry rose shade that leans towards a deep lilac depending on the light.
Have You Seen My Limo? gets the prize for most unique. Yet another duo-chrome, the deep grape base has silver and green shimmer that allows the shade to transform from reddish purple to a dark silvery plum. I really hope OPI adds this to their permanent Classic Collection.
Who Are You Wearing? is a tough color to accurately capture. I must have shot 40+ images of it and I still had to add swatch shots from other images to give you an idea of how truly cool this polish is. When I first saw online swatches of it I thought it was just another blue, like OPI Ink or Russian Navy but, oh no it's so much more! The final duo-chrome in this collection, Who Are You Wearing? has a red shimmer that only appears in warm indoor lighting. Otherwise it's a battle between the blue shimmer and the purple base as to which color you'll see. The purple being the hardest to capture digitally. This is a shade you MUST see for yourself.

NOTD: Sally Hansen Navy Venom
I haven't posted an actual Nail Of The Day look in a while. Thanks to a fellow nailie and shopping buddy that hunted down the Sally Hansen Fall Runway Collection on Cleveland's west side, I have this beauty to show you.
The collection was designed and inspired by fashion designer Tracy Reese in collaboration with Sally Hansen. Playing on the idea of contrasts (black & white, navy & white, bright coral & black) the collection is has a varied palette of shades.- Black Patent (jet black) – Official shade that walked the runway
- Alabaster (off white/eggshell) – Official shade that walked the runway
- Navy Venom (dark navy/ink)
- Baroque Bronze (metallic brown)
- Grenadine Glaze (rich metallic pink with a tint of gold glaze)
- Rose Carthane (metallic coral with a tint of pink)
- Mulberry Glaze (metallic purple/grape)
- Cerise Noir (Bordeaux)
- Plum Licorice (deep metallic purple/plum)
- The Deepest Violet (matte purple)
Even though I own other shades from the Salon line, this is actually the first one I've worn and I was quite pleased. The application was smooth and easy to control. The lacquer was well pigmented and opaque with two coats and the shimmer is minimal which makes Navy Venom a great everyday shade. The wear wasn't really the best but I'm sure all the packing and moving I've been doing played a part in that so I can't give a final ruling in that department.
With the prominence of blue polish this fall, this color definitely makes my list and should have been included with my Fall Trend picks.
Lippmann Collection Fall 2007
The new fall shades from Deborah Lippmann's Lippmann Collection, I Want Candy and Rehab, are a departure from what you would normally expect to see for the fall season. They're sheer with a jelly finish and very unique. The most versatile fall polishes I've seen in a while. The formula makes these bold shades something that a sheer fan can wear comfortably but buildable enough to please opaque wearers. I have to admit that when I saw Rehab in promotional photos I got all excited about finding a great navy creme. There are a lot of beautiful navy polishes out there but very few cremes. And then I heard about Rehab's sheer quality and my heart sank. I wasn't looking forward to testing it because I didn't want to give a bad review of a blue. I love blue polish. So you can imagine my joy and surprise when I gave it a test run and discovered the exceptional glossy finish and pigmentation.
Here is my Rehab mani with 2 coats of lacquer. It's more subtle, I'd call it a cornflower blue.
And here is 4 coats. Beautious navy goodness.
I Want Candy, as a sheer, reminds me of the Revlon Glimmer Gloss Strawberry Sizzle but without the glitter and a much prettier finish. With four coats, it reaches bottle color which is a great candy apple red. Both I Want Candy and Rehab apply smoothly without streaking so it's easy to achieve a sheer or opaque look that is clean and even.

Ok so the question I'm sure a lot of you are asking is, are they worth it? You know that I'm frugal, that spending $15 on polish is not my M.O. However, I do feel that for blue lovers Rehab is worth every penny. I can honestly say I don't have another color like it and I own a LOT of blue polish. If I could find a less expensive alternative, I'd tell you. Now I Want Candy is one I'd personally pass on at retail price. But for people that love red as much as I love blue, go for it! If you have the means and love the finish, it's a great shade but not one I'd consider a "must have" for my collection.

MAC Fall 2007
I wish I had been able to share these shades with you before they sold out on MAC's website. All this moving stuff is slowing me down. I didn't expect nail lacquers to be the only products from the Smoke Signals and Blue Storm collections to sell out (with the exception of one lipglass). Though considering how gorgeous they are, it's not overly surprising.
Being the bargain hunter that I am I generally don't look to MAC for my polish at $10/bottle but, I can't resist a pretty color. Which is why I covet my bottles of Vin Goth, Blue Sprinkles, Rose Topping and Tiger Tiger. And why I have a drawer filled with blue, green and purple MAC shadows even though I rarely wear makeup other than my everyday neutral look.
I have to thank the lovely and generous Julia from All About The Pretty for offering to send her samples of these four new lacquers to me.
First up, the Blue Storm shades.
Whirlwind is glorious. Even more so in person. There is no way to capture this incredible shade and do it justice. If you can still find this at your local MAC counter, buy it!! Even if you don't wear blues or greens, BUY IT!! It applies like a dream, has amazing shimmer and fire and is completely swoon-worthy.
Rainy Day is what I'd call a "great concept, poor execution". A beautiful stormy blue-gray is right up my alley. But making it a metallic chrome instead of a shimmer like Whirlwind was a mistake in my opinion. The application and it's finish filled with brush strokes disappointed me. This is a case where layering could save this beautious shade. I'll have to play with some combos.
Now on to Smoke Signals.
When I first read that MAC was coming out with a black with red shimmer I thought here we go, they're jumping on the Lubu Heels, RBL Revamp bandwagon. I've never been so happy to be wrong. Why Wildfire is described as having red shimmer, I'll never know. It's actually a plum shimmer that turns this black based polish into a sexy deep purple on the nail.
Nocturnelle is a repromote that originally debuted with the Nocturnelle collection in October 2006, right in the middle of the black polish craze. For a black creme, Nocturnelle represents well. It's highly pigmented, glossy and smooth. But, I couldn't in good conscience tell you to go buy Nocturnelle when there are plenty of similar black cremes in your local drugstore that look just as nice. Unless you specifically want MAC's formula, I say skip it.

Customization: Frankenpolish & The Art Of Layering
Ask any beauty junkie and we'll admit, no matter how many shades, fragrances or formulations are thrown our way we are still restless for more. Even if we find that perfect product, after a while we'll wish it was a bit more "something". Deeper in color, smoother in feel, slightly more floral, etc. Let's face, it we're just never satisfied.
As we've learned from magazines, makeup artists and our fellow product junkies, beauty is like Burger King; we can have it our way. All it takes is a little customizing. Whether it's layering your favorite perfumes to create a signature scent, mixing your moisturizer in with your foundation to make it sheer and dewy or blending eight different shadows to achieve that perfect smokey eye we love to alter and combine our favorite products.
In the world of lacquer it's no different. When we can't find the color we want we become kids again, mixing lacquer like we used to mix our finger paints. It's all about experimenting, letting your imagination go and relying on our childhood art lessons about the color wheel. Say it with me folks, yellow and blue make green. Now I'm having Ziploc commercial flashbacks.
There are two methods of customizing polish:
- Layering - Using multiple layers of different colors to create the desired shade
- Mixing - Combining two or more lacquers in a bottle (aka Frankenpolish)
First let's discuss the easiest way to customize your color, layering. It's very no muss, no fuss. The only real trick is making sure the edges of each layer line up. If you have a shade that is too light or dark, layer it over white or black. Is your polish to sheer? Layer it over a similar hued opaque formula or black. Everything looks more intense over black. Love the shade of your chrome or metallic finish polish but hate the brush strokes? Add a sheer on top to achieve a smoother finish. Here are some examples from my own experiments.
I was so excited when I got China Glaze Kaleidoscope Him Out and He's Going In Circles because not only are they holographic but they're blue and green holos. Unfortunately, I didn't feel that the green and blue made enough of an impact.
So I layered them over opaque creme lacquers and pow! Instant intensity.
Here's an example of how I combated brush strokes in a metallic finish. I love the color of China Glaze Open Sky but the finish left something to be desired. So I turned to a holo for help. Adding a layer of OPI Blue Moon Lagoon didn't alter the beauty of Open Sky, it just added a little bling and a smoother look.
These two were just for fun. I love my greens but a girl can never have enough options.
Now on to the science project that is the Frankenpolish.
My first try at making my own polish was to mix MAC pigment with clear lacquer. Mixing pigments can be a lot of work but if you have a gorgeous shade that would look great on your nails, it's worth it. I buy Milani clear polish but others like using Sally Hansen Insta Dri. I add 1/4 tsp. of pigment at a time and mix, mix, mix before I test it on the nail. Just keep adding pigment until you've reached the desired opacity. If you can, add a couple mixing balls because the pigment will settle out when not in use.
Here are the results of my first ever pigment mix. This is MAC Entremauve in Milani Crystal Clear lacquer. The pink sparkles in Entremauve really pop as a polish.
The other method for mixing your own polish is to combine different lacquers to create a new shade. The true Frankenpolish.
