From olive to hunter, military inspired designs and colors dominated the Fall 2011 runway shows. Those shades came straight off the models and into nail polish bottles in a number of the fall collections.

Over the next couple weeks I’ll be walking you through the big nail polish trends for the season, showing you the newest shades to hit the market and the old school colors you may already own that will get your nail style ready for fall.

Butter London Wallis ($14, butterLondon.com, Beauty.com, ULTA, Nordstrom) is a metallic olive green that leans heavily towards gold. The base is a dark olive but the green-gold flakes floating on the surface give this colors a foil-like finish.

China Glaze Westside Warrior ($3, Head2ToeBeauty, TransDesign. $6, Sally Beauty) reminds me of castelvetrano olives. I only recently discovered these buttery gems through a friend and I’m obsessed. My only complaint with Westside Warrior is that the formula wasn’t up to par. It was pigmented but a little goopy and hard to work with.

Color Club Artsy Crafty ($8, ShopColorClub.com) is a lush forest green with a greyed underbelly that gives it some grit.

Cult Nails In A Trance ($10, CultNails.com) is a browned olive green shimmer. The satiny finish and old world charm hearkens back to medieval tapestries or royal gowns.

Deborah Lippmann Billionaire ($16, DeborahLippmann.com, Barneys, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom) is the darkest of the fall green offerings. It’s as if you took a vivid hunter green and drabbed it out with a touch of brown and black. The color was used at the Lela Rose F/W 2011 show and it’s got this great jelly consistency that is packed with pigment.

Finger Paints Military Green ($4.99, SallyBeauty.com) honestly looks terrible in the bottle. It was kind of yellowish, like baby poo or something but on the nail, LOVE! It’s reminiscent of Essie Sew Psyched or Chanel Khaki Vert and applies flawlessly on the nail.

MAC Fatigues ($15, MACCosmetics.com) is part of the MAC Me Over! collection and what I love about it is that it’s not as yellow based as the other colors in this category. It’s more cool tone friendly.

OPI Uh-Oh Roll Down The Window ($8.50,OPI.com for locations) is a vivid olive hue. I know the words feel wrong together but I’ve been calling it a bright drab. The name is the only thing that bothers me. Even though, at my core, I’m a 12 year old boy with a love for potty humor, mixing that with something in the beauty world doesn’t sit right with me.

Zoya Dree ($8, Zoya.com) is the darkened version of OPI Uh-Oh. They definitely live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school and may even share some classes together.

Zoya Yara ($8, Zoya.com) – Okay so I have this sweater that I refuse to get rid of even though it’s so out of style it’s not even funny. The reason I keep it, it looks exactly like Yara! It’s this yellow-based green knit hoodie that has small golden threads woven throughout. Now that I have a polish to match it, why would I donate it?

365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to. The blogging community in Cleveland is pretty amazing. Even though the city is relatively large, the social media circle feels small and tight knit, in a good way, and I’ve met some great people through it. Tonight, for instance, I was invited to an event at a local restaurant with a bunch of my fellow bloggers.  We had attended a special media preview when Washington Place Bistro opened its doors last winter and tonight they celebrated the opening of their new patio with a pig roast. Of course, being the lone beauty girl in this crowd, I have come to expect that my nail color will be noticed or asked about so I try to make sure I’m on point. With the event being sort of a kickoff to patio season I wanted to make sure my polish was springy yet unique. I knew I was wearing a royal blue top so I started looking for an edgy neutral or light/dark blue in my untrieds bin and pulled this beauty out.  Being that I dragged butter LONDON through the mud over their No More Waity Katie shade a couple weeks ago I hoped Lady Muck would not let me down.

Formula & Application: butter LONDON is known for its 3-Free formula but it is actually 4-Free (no Formaldehyde Resin). The bottle has a smooth plastic outer cap that easily slides off (thanks to a bottle redesign) to reveal a ribbed, round inner cap used for polishing. The brush is thin and round with flexible bristles that easily fan out to cover the nail.

The first coat of Lady Muck went on and it didn’t appear that pigmented as it flowed easily on the nail. You never what you’re going to get when you first apply a polish and usually such a light color tends to be either semi-sheer and watery or opaque, thick and chalky. Lady Muck falls into neither category. It’s rich, pigmented and a breeze to apply requiring only two coats.  Utter perfection.

butter LONDON Lady Muck is a greyed, light cornflower blue packed with silvery shimmer.  While the base color reminds me of China Glaze Sea Spray, the finish is more on par with OPI I Vant To Be A-lone Star. In actuality it appears more shimmery than either one, think Funky Fingers Elephunk, due to how much deeper Lady Muck’s hue is than the other two.

Bottom Line: Between Sea Spray, which you know I adore, I Vant To Be A-lone Star and Lady Muck, Lady Muck is my hands down favorite of the three. I love the slightly dirty undertone, the standout shimmer and impeccable application. butter LONDON’s Nonie Creme hit it out of the park with this one.

The Anglophiles are savoring every second of coverage that the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton are receiving. Then there are people like me, who could care less. For the record, I’m not a complainer who wants to stop hearing about it. I respect that people care so I just tune out. What really bugs me though are the companies hawking products with their likenesses, imitations of the engagement ring, etc. And of course there just had to be a nail polish. butter LONDON’s Nonie Creme paid homage to the Royal Couple with the shade No More Waity, Katie, based on a nickname given to Kate by the press. Being that Nonie is British and her nail polish creations all have Brit-themed names, I’m giving her a pass on this one. Mainly because the color intrigued me. If the shade didn’t sound special, I NEVER would have bought it.

Given the amount of glitter packed into the formula, it’s no surprise that it applies semi-sheer with a jelly-ish feel.  Though unlike bL’s popular JELLY line, No More Waity, Katie is buildable to opaque.  After three generous coats I achieved full coverage.  One thing to note, the polish dries a bit flat so whip out your glossiest top coat.  You may need two coats to completely smooth out the glitter texture.

butter LONDON No More Waity, Katie is at its core a smokey lavender, a lighter version of Chanel Paradoxal. It is described as greige on the website but I see no evidence of that here. Sprinkled into the base is light purple hexagonal glitter.  Something about this color feels grungy to me.  There’s too much smoke in the water so to speak.  It ends up looking more punk than royal.

Bottom Line: While I appreciate where Nonie was going with this, for me it falls flat. The color doesn’t look as special as it sounded or as special as it should be. I know people have been and will continue to scoop up this color due to the name and what it’s associated with but from me it gets a pass.

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: As much as I know I should say SHARE, the hoarder in me wants to STASH it even though I’m not in love with. I may play with some layering to see if I can make it workable.

Last season we saw nails elevated from accessories to full on jewelry at Diego Binetti. This season at Vena Cava, butter LONDON‘s Nonie Creme is pushing the boundaries, bringing nail polish to a whole new territory; skin.  That’s right, she’s taking over “real estate” from the skin and by creating jewelry with nail polish applied directly on fingers. Nail art savant Melissa from The Daily Nail has extended her designs on to the skin in the past but this is the first time I’ve seen the actual nails ignored entirely.  Nonie applied “finger bands” of color to two fingers on each model, some single, some double, and a simple coat of clear Hard Wear top coat to the nails. To replicate the look follow Nonie’s tips: Start with clean, dry skin.  Swipe with remover.  Start below the first knuckle.  Only paint a few fingers or else it will look too tribal. Allow 15 minutes to dry and expect 24 hours of wear.

Get the Vena Cava look using butter LONDON Royal Navy, Scoundrel, Tramp Stamp, and Union Jack Black. The orange, Flouro Orange, is not yet in production.  butter LONDON polishes retail for $14/ea and are available online at butterLONDON.com and Beauty.com.

As an editorial manicurist and butter LONDON Creative Director, Nonie Creme merges the world of fashion with nail color.  So it should come as no surprise that when the fashion community experienced the loss of the brilliant Alexander McQueen, Nonie thought to pay tribute to his genius. The butter LONDON Fall 2010 Collection polishes All Hail McQueen and Bumster are both nods to the designer.  Marrow is Nonie’s second collaboration with the designers behind Vena Cava and Victoriana is a faded blue inspired by vintage British fabrics.

Application & Formula: butter LONDON is known for its 3-Free formula but it is actually 4-Free (no Formaldehyde Resin).  The bottle has a smooth plastic outer cap that easily slides off (thanks to a bottle redesign) to reveal a ribbed, round inner cap used for polishing.  The brush is thin and round with flexible bristles that easily fan out to cover the nail.

The consistency of these polishes is thick but spreadable.  You can almost feel how pigmented they are.  With the exception of All Hail McQueen I only used two coats of polish to get full coverage.  However, I would suggest waiting for a few minutes between coats.  I went to apply my second coat of Bumster a little early and ended up with a bit of dragging and had to start over to avoid using a third coat.

Victoriana is a patina-esque muted blue packed with silver micro-glitter.  The base color reminds me a lot of Rescue Beauty Lounge 360 only this is a bit more vivid.  I see a green undertone in this in the same way that 360 has a tinge of green, like murky seawater.

All Hail McQueen is described as a holographic taupe.  On me, it’s a twinkling BBB (band-aid but better) shade.  I love it because it’s a more wearable, sparkly version of one of my fave BBB shades, OPI Skinny Dip’n In Lake Michigan.

My only real point of contention with this color is the “holographic” claim.  Yes, there is multi-colored glitter in the polish but you don’t really see it unless you are in the sunlight and even then you mainly see the rose colored glitter.  I don’t see a holographic/prismatic effect.  The polish is still beautiful but I wouldn’t classify it as a holo.

Marrow looks different than the custom mixed color Nonie showed me backstage during NYFW.  See for yourself.  Granted the lighting situation is much different but still, I remember it as a dusty plum.  Much more like what you would expect dried bone marrow to look like.  Used at the Vena Cava FW 10′ show, designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock named the reddish grape polish.  A fine silver shimmer replaces the glitter seen in the runway version to add depth and shine.

I’m still not sure how I feel about Bumster. Named after McQueen’s famous low slung trousers, this dijon yellow creme is a bit daunting on the nail. I appreciate it for being so odd but I don’t know if I love it or hate it with my coloring.  In poor lighting it looks like baby poop which is not exactly a look I’m going for.  I don’t own it to compare but this looks a lot like Misa Hot Couture from the Runway collection which was another polarizing love it/hate it polish.

Bottom Line: If you liked RBL 360 or are into blues & greens like me you’ll love Victoriana. It’s my top pick from the collection and totally unique. All Hail McQueen is my runner up. It’s an amped up neutral that can work for day or night. I wish I could say that Marrow lived up to my expectations but it fell short. I think with all the purples that have come out this past year, including my own, they’re all starting to blend together.

Remember way back in February 2009 when I had a CalGel Gradation Manicure done at Sakura in NYC?  If you’re not familiar, a gradation manicure creates an ombre effect where the polish fades down the nail.  I wore a version with a purple tip that faded into clear but you can also fade two colors together. As much as I loved the look of my CalGel mani, the thought of spending two hours at the salon to get it done and another half hour or longer to remove it does not sound appealing.  There has to be an easier way.  An at-home method to get the look for less.  Enter butter LONDON Stroppy.

Let me back up a second.  Not long after my Sakura experience I spoke with Celebrity Manicurist Elle and we talked about gradations and how there is such a thing as Gradation Liquid but that it’s somewhat hard to obtain.  I believe unless you have an Asian hookup you’re S.O.L.  Anyway, Elle suggested I try DIYing a jelly polish to create the ombre effect I desired.  That by layering it and moving the starting point of each layer up the nail, I could get the same gradation look at home.

Fast forward to the present and have I tried Elle’s suggested method?  No.  Why?  I have no idea.  Either laziness or I just plain forgot about it.  Regardless, I was attempting to clean up the polish room before my trip to Vegas when I came across the butter LONDON Jelly polishes and inspiration struck.

On its own butter LONDON Stroppy is a sheer, red grape hue packed with red and blue micro-glitter.  Creative Director Nonie Creme specifically designed the Jelly line to be worn as either a sheer wash of color or built up for a more see-through candy look.  These aren’t the kind of jellies that will ever become opaque so, to me, they’re best used for layering.  What you see below is three coats.

Yesterday, I still had on the CND Night Factory Duo and for the heck of it I layered butter LONDON Stroppy on top in the manner Elle suggested.  The result… a stunning gradation blending sparkly teal and glittery purple.  It’s a ridiculously gorgeous combination.  I actually like it so much, I decided to wear it to Vegas for Cosmoprof.

Get The Look: I started with a base of CND Urban Oasis with Teal Sparkle on top.  After that dried I layered Stroppy starting approximately 1/3 of the way up the nail from the cuticle.  I split the top 2/3 of my nail into four sections and those became the starting points for each layer of polish (see below).

With each additional layer the color intensifies so that by the time you get to the fourth coat, the tip is an intense purple.  As you apply, you will be able to see the starting points for each layer but don’t worry, once you add a top coat, they all blend together.

Application Tip: Use thin coats.  Because you are putting at least six layers of polish, plus base and top coat, you want to use extremely thin coats so that your polish dries thoroughly and doesn’t bubble.

The butter LONDON Jelly collection includes two other jelly finish polishes; Chuffed (tangerine) and Twee (raspberry tinged pink). I’m thinking Chuffed would look fantastic over yellow and that Twee would pair nicely with a glitzy purple like Zoya Mimi.  Of course any sheer jelly would work for this look so dig through your stashes and start layering.

The DIY Version: If shelling out for the Jellys isn’t in your budget or you’re just the crafty type, try mixing up your own version at home.  Blend your favorite shade into clear polish a little at a time, until you achieve a sheer wash of color.  Remember, the clear polish should be more predominant in the mix.

Test the polish after each addition, making sure to apply a few coats of color so you can see whether it’s buildable.  If the jelly is too sheer it won’t have enough impact.  If it becomes too opaque, thin it out with a bit more clear.  Think of this as a science experiment and have fun with it.  There is no “perfect” here so mix until you’re happy with the opacity.

For two seasons in a ROW I’ve missed the Vena Cava show and it’s killing me! Each season butter LONDON’s Nonie Creme works with the designers behind Vena Cava, Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, to create a custom nail color for their show and they have all been stunning.

Last February it was the knock-out British Racing Green that launched last Fall.  This past September I was at a blogging conference when Nonie mixed Artful Dodger and Royal Navy to create a stunning cobalt blue.  And now there’s this…

Nonie, you’re killing me!!  When I saw Nonie backstage at the Betsey Johnson show, I had to ask about the shade all my beauty blogging pals had been tweeting about.  Marrow was given its name by the designers and it’s a deep purple with this slightly dusty  look to it.  Though it’s the flecks of glitter that really made my eyes pop.  Though Nonie told me that the mix used for the show had more glitter than what we’ll see when Marrow hits shelves.

Are you dying over this color or what?  That’s what I get for flying in a day late.  You better believe that won’t happen again.

It’s that time again Fanatics.  New York Fashion Week has kicked into high gear and I am here in NYC once again to bring you the nail scoop as it happens.  I’m kicking things off tonight at the Charlotte Ronson show where Cleveland based manicurist Julie Kandalec (from Jennifer & Co. in Mentor) will be keying the show using China Glaze colors.  I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with! NYFW officially started two days ago and unfortunately I was still in the Cleveburg while some hot nail fashions rocked the runway.  butter London, CND and Dashing Diva all put out some stellar looks over the past couple days and I’ve got a quick recap on what we’ve missed after the jump!

First up, Nonie Creme of butter London worked with Vena Cava to create a unique purple with a milky film. She custom blended the shade right on site after their initial test run of a burgundy nail fell flat. Check out these behind-the-scenes videos where Nonie talks about the look for Vena Cava and how the color was created. I have to say I’m uber bummed about missing this show because she always creates such unique shades for Vena Cava. British Racing Green came out of last February’s show so I hope that means this polish will be making its way to us come fall.

Next we’ll take a look at the Ruffian show where CND created a custom tip using a matte navy blue with a chrome moon. I love that Ruffian is so into nails. They chose a deep red moon manicure last February and a unique raspberry and black design to match a tapestry last season so it’s really no surprise to see another one-of-a-kind look from the CND team.

Finally, Dashing Diva upped the ante when they pulled out these glass metallic nails. Designers Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs collaborated with Pattie Yankee to create a look of raw elegance, by using a gritty, animalistic texture for the nails. Pattie used Dashing Diva Chrome Press-On Nails with an appliqué of crushed glass glitter in black and silver to give out-standing texture to nails.

All you JELLY polish lovers have a reason to rejoice this Spring.  butter LONDON is launching a collection of three sheer but buildable jellies in a fruity array of hues. According to butter LONDON Creative Director Nonie Creme, “The idea is juicy, sheer colour that looks and feels like slick, wet “lipgloss” for your nails.” Check out detailed preview images of Chuffed, Stroppy and Twee after the jump!

The concept behind the JELLY line is that the colors can be worn as a sheer kiss of color or a semi-sheer tint. Think Lippmann Rehab and I Want Candy from Fall 2007. Rehab is still one of my fave blues even though it needs 4 coats to become opaque. There’s just something about that jelly finish that I love. I know a ton of you agree. Nonie designed this palette with the intention of layering the shades to create new colors. I imagine combining Twee and Chuffed would make a pretty coral and I’m wondering if Stroppy and Twee would make some sort of magenta concoction. Of course all the polishes are named in bL’s signature style, using British slang and phrases.

Chuffed is an expression of pleasure (ie geeked, stoked, etc) and I’m certainly pleased at the prospect of this tangerine dream.

Stroppy is slang for a moody “bitter betty” type person.  Though to me, a gorgeous purple is anything but miserable.  It looks like a bottle of pure joy.

I found two definitions for Twee online.  One being things that are dainty or quaint.  The other refers to something that is overly sweet or cloying neither one being a positive connotation.  I’m assuming Nonie meant the latter when she named this sugary pink.

After I posted my swatches of the OPI Alice in Wonderland collection, I couldn’t get the thought of a Cheshire Cat inspired polish out of my head. You may have missed that in the comments section but I suggested a pink and purple glitter to represent the Cheshire Cat.  I know in the upcoming film the cat won’t be colored like the Disney animated version but it still sounded like a fun concept.  So over the weekend I dug through my stash and came up with my Cheshire Cat franken to accompany the collection.  Check it out!

If you’re unfamiliar with the custom blending (aka frankenpolish) concept, check out my post Customization: Frankenpolish & The Art of Layering or head on over to Dr. Frankenpolish for her detailed instructions. For this mix I wanted two glitter polishes with clear bases.  I didn’t want any sort of pigment mucking up the mix.  I also wanted to use a lighter purple, similar to the Cheshire Cat.  In my collection, the colors that fit my concept best are Color Club Tru Passion and butter London Rosie Lee.  The violet hue of Tru Passion and warm rose tone of Rosie Lee made my ideal color blend. To create my Cheshire Cat Franken mix: 1/3 bottle Color Club Tru Passion 30 drops of butter London Rosie Lee

Note: My bottle of Tru Passion has thickened considerably.  I must have left the cap partially open at some point.  Even adding a LOT of thinner it was still pretty goopy so my application was a little off.  Don’t judge any finish issues or bald spots on the polish.

The look I wantes was a mid-tone violet peppered with hints of pink and I think this mix captured that.  In person the pink flecks pop more, I just had a hard time showing that.  Because these are pretty chunky glitters I added two layers of top coat to make my tips glossy and smooth but I’m really happy with the final result.

This picture was shot under artificial light and I think it shows the pink glitter a bit better.
