Essie Resort Fling DIY Subtle Sparkle #ManiMonday

It’s no secret that Essie Resort Fling is one of my fave shades for spring. The peachy, coral creme jelly (sorry the word “crelly” makes my skin crawl), is near perfect. The only thing that could make it better is that subdued crystal sparkle in shades like Sunday Funday and Naughty Nautical.

So, for this #ManiMonday, I used Essie Pure Pearlfection to create that signature look and now Resort Fling looks even more amazing!!

DIY Subtle Sparkle

Thanks to the semi-sheer pigmentation of the jelly-based Essie Resort Fling, layering Pure Pearlfection UNDER allows the clear crystals to peek through without overpowering the glorious squishy, glossy finish.

Get The Look: Start with two thin, THIN coats of Resort Fling. Add a generous coat of Pure Pearlfection, another thin coat of Resort Fling and repeat. As the top layer dries, the crystals shine through and take this color over the top. I mean…

Bottom Line: I can’t wait to play with Pure Pearlfection and some more creme jelly polishes to recreate this look. It may become my favorite layering effect. As much as the multi-colored glitter bombs draw the eye, you can’t deny the impact a simple crystal fleck can have.

Essie Resort Fling and Pure Pearlfection are available now at salons and mass retailers nationwide and online at Essie.com, Nordstrom.com and ULTA.com. Essie nail polish retails for $8.50/ea.

What are you wearing for Mani Monday? Have you tried layering with Pure Pearlfection? Will you give my layering combination a try?

  1. Okay, I need Pearlfection now!

  2. Lisa N. says:

Such a pretty pairing and it is so subtle! :)

  3. StripyJules says:

I bought the set of four ‘Resort Fling’ mini polishes as I wasn’t sure how the shades would work on my colouring (pale, freckly lapsed redhead – lapsed through age and, I hope, wisdom :P ). I liked the colours but the brushes in the set I got were AWFUL, gave me an awful finish which no matter how I tried wouldn’t be remedied. I haven’t worn any of the four yet :-( .

  4. Thank you for making me realize that my bottle of Pure Pearlfection has been untouched for too long. Beautiful!

  5. Katie says:

Beautiful! I just took Resort Fling off, and I must go get Pearlflection now!

  6. Jenn says:

That is really pretty, but just a little too subtle for my liking. I need a little more sparkle than that, lol. But I’m digging that coral shade!

  7. JDV says:

    Oh that Pearlflection is *gorgeous*!!

  8. Lorraine says:

Nice combo! I don’t have Resort Fling, but Pure Pearlfection is waiting in my stash. I adore layering combos like this. It’s worth the extra effort when you get such gorgeous results.

  9. JayJay says:

6 coats! It’s undeniably pretty but that’s an awful lot of polish for such a subtle outcome. Nice, very nice, but I think I’d want some kind of accent finger.

    • You could probably get away with less coats. I don’t know that two coats of Pure Pearlfection are necessary. Also, my coats of Resort Fling are SUPER thin, like barely a real coat. It didn’t look or feel that thick and wore very well.

  10. Dee says:

I love Pearl Perfection over polish but never thought of putting it under. Must try!

  11. DEBBIE BELL says:

Ohhh I am an Essie lover & I have Resort Fling..which I adore!! But I have to go get Pearlflection today!! It look awesome!! Thanks Michelle:) xoxo your so talented!

  12. Amanda says:

The whole “crelly” thing confuses me anyhow… I get what it is, & I think I would like it, but I don’t think I have any & I have no clue how to tell just by looking at the bottle. I guess I tend to stick to cremes & sparklies, whether that is through flecks or glitter or the pearlescent.

I do like how that mani turned out! Makes me want to get Pearlfection so I can tinker with it. I have a Wet n Wild that seems semi similar (from work) but more white to it I think… I might try something with that since I don’t have the Pearlfection right now!

    • I’m with you, I don’t get the crelly thing either. I think it’s just a difference in formula and texture between brands. Some are more creamy and others are more squishy/watery.

  13. Tricia says:

I’ve been wanting Resort Fling for quite some time. After seeing this, I must have it, and now I’ll have to get Pure Pearlfection to go along with it! So pretty!

  14. Lara says:

This is GENIUS. I have so many polishes like this with bottle shimmer that doesn’t show through on the nail. Must experiment…

  15. Y says:

wow, I need this top! I’m a big fan of pearl-shimmery! And I have a question about essie nail polish: I got 2 bottle of essie turquoise & caicos, one of them made from USA and one of them made from France and they are totally different color… does essie use different formula in different country?

  16. Sandy S says:

I actually got brave and tried it and it looks great on me. Thanks for the tip because I am hardly ever satisfied trying something new.

    • I’m so glad to hear that Sandy. I know how frustrating it is to try a technique or color that someone else raves about, only to have it look horrible or not work on me. That was my experience when I tried water marbling, though I vowed to give it another go this year.
