Three Ways To Wear Sally Hansen “Fuzzy Coat” Textured Nail Polish

While textured nail polish is, without a doubt, the predominant trend for 2013, it’s also extremely polarizing. There is a hard line in the sand when it comes to the love/hate relationship we have with the look. And though sand texture has made the biggest impact, the fuzzy/feathered look isn’t far behind. Enter Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat.

In the bottle, the bar glitter looks like a whirlwind of color and on the nail like tiny feathers or fibers. But, what is the best way to wear them? Here are my three favorite ways to incorporate the Fuzzy Coats into your nail style.

Formula & Application: Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat nail polish is 5-Free (Formaldehyde, DPB, Toluene, Formaldehyde Resin and Camphor). It comes in the same oval bottle as the HD and Gem Crush lines. The flat, wide brush is medium in length with dense, flexible bristles.

The Fuzzy Coat polishes are made up of a clear, jelly-textured base filled with multi-colored matte, bar glitter. The glitter is a bit sparse so, to get them opaque, expect to use 4+ coats. The base is on the thick side so apply thin coats and give ample dry time between layers.

Application tips: The glitter tends to settle over time so roll the bottle a few times prior to application. To ensure even glitter coverage, use my “Dab, Dip, Glide” technique.

To get some ideas on how to work with the Fuzzy Coat polishes, I looked to Sally Hansen Global Nail Expert, Dana Caruso.

“Texture manicures have been all the rage but the new spin that is getting the most buzz is the Sugar/Caviar and Fuzzy Nail trend.  It is the hottest trend in textured fingertip couture.”

“My application tip when using Sally Hansen’s Fuzzy Coat is to begin by applying one thin and even coat of Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure in a solid color to clean dry nails. Let dry and then apply two thin and controlled coats of Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat. The best style for your chosen nail look is a nail that is on the shorter side and rounded versus square.”

Layered

Dana suggested I try some of her favorite Fuzzy Coat layering combinations; Fuzzy Coat Wool Lite over CSM Rosy Outlook, Fuzzy Coat Wool Knot over CSM Wedding Glitters, Fuzzy Coat All Yarned Up over CSM Pink A Card.

Dana’s fourth suggestion, Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Tight Knit over CSM Hi Ho Silver is definitely my favorite. The foil metallic peeking through the matte, white and blue bar glitter brings another dimension to the look.

Jelly Sandwich

I’ve only ever worn jelly sandwich manicures involving sparkly, metallic glitter so I wanted to give the style a go with this colorful, matte glitter. I opted to sandwich Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Fuzz-Sea between layers of Sally Hansen CSM Jaded, a creamy sea-foam jelly. The milkiness of Jaded gives an illusion of depth to the particles swimming inside it.

Party Nail

If the idea of wearing texture on every nail is a bit much, try it on one nail over an opaque base color to create a new twist on the party nail. Pairing CSM Coral Fever and CSM Wedding Glitters is a gorgeous look on its own. Adding a couple coats of Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat Peach Fuzz over Wedding Glitters takes it to a whole new level.

Note: Coral Fever was LE but CSM Kook a Mango or Get Juiced are excellent substitutes.

Bottom Line: If the grittiness of sugar texture polish isn’t your thing, give the Fuzzy Coats a try. While you can definitely feel the glitter, it’s just slightly bumpy, not sandpaper-esque. If you’re already a fan of glitter top coats, these will make a great addition to your arsenal.

Sally Hansen Fuzzy Coat nail polishes are available now at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide. Find them online at Drugstore.com, Target.com and Walgreens.com. They retail for $5.49-6.99, depending on the store, for .31oz.

    Whoa. What is jelly sandwich??

    • Michelle Mismas says:

It’s when you layer (or sandwich) a glitter nail polish in between layers of a sheer jelly polish.

  2. I was SO disappointed with this polish! I had to write up my disappointment on my blog… it was really just a bar glitter and really did NOT deliver on the fuzzy, sweater like texture shown in the photos.

    • Michelle Mismas says:

Hi Trisha Lyn! I can’t recall the images on the displays but I’m sorry they didn’t live up to your expectations. I had tried the Nails Inc version prior to this so I knew what to expect. That’s why I asked Dana for tips with working with them. Layering them to opaqueness just wasn’t working for me.

    they are so beautifull
    i loved it

    kisses

  4. Kellie says:

Psst…is that Sally Hansen Wedding Glitz…as opposed to Glitters? If so I have one of the many dupes…Revlon Carbonite…soooo pretty!!!!

    • Michelle Mismas says:

Hi Kellie! Nope, it’s Wedding Glitters. Part of the core collection and similar to Orly Luxe

  5. Risu says:

I have All Yarned Up and it looks seriously amazing over a navy blue creme.

  6. Ms Jelena says:

I had a look at them and thought they were great, but then changed my mind and didn’t buy any. I’m still a bit unsure of how I feel about them. I wish they were thicker, I think!

    xx

    • Michelle Mismas says:

Rite Aid is doing 40% off of Sally Hansen this week so now is the time to try them, if you’re on the fence.

  7. Cristina says:

I’m not 100% sold on these, but I definitely want to see them in person! Peach Fuzz especially.

  8. Katy M says:

I just picked up Wool Lite and am so so glad you showed these examples! I’m going to try a jelly sandwich with a bright pink.

P.s. I’m so thrilled to see you posting so often again! :)

  9. rockandsole says:

I just picked these up at Target and I love them. They such a great consistency.

    • Michelle Mismas says:

I agree. When I tried to get them opaque I had issues with the consistency but layering them in thin coats causes no problems.

  10. Shari says:

I had passed these by, notwithstanding that the Fuzz one reminded me of Floam…your Tight Knit/sliver combo is gorge and I’m going to use that for my Hanukkah mani! Cheers!

  11. Helena says:

I think I will make some kind of gradient with it.

  12. Josephine says:

I love the combo with the silver base! Looks great!

  13. Jenn says:

own em all! Added over regular old nail polish. I am such a novice. How do you tell that a nail polish is “jelly?” Thanks!

    • Michelle Mismas says:

A jelly nail polish is sheer or semi-sheer with a lucite type look. Think of a pair of dice or jello. If it has a strong color but you can see through it, that’s a jelly.

  14. El says:

I like it, they’re funny and beautiful.

  15. saki says:

They seem pretty! Might have to try them out! Thanks for your post!

  16. Melissa says:

I just picked up a bottle today and can’t wait to try it!

  17. mariamarvel says:

Wow, I didn’t know that SH Jaded was a jelly!

  18. Laura says:

I love this line! It’s so unique and it dresses up any manicure instantly.

  19. Cindy says:

I am wearing Wool Knot (not pictured, this one is a bright blue with white) and I love it! Going back to the store today to get more colors. ;o)

  20. Stephanie says:

I bought a few of these at the Rite Aid sale simply because of your post ideas :) got the pink, a lighter blue I don’t see in your pic, the beige/blue and green/blue (sorry the names all escape me atm!) Going to use mostly for jelly sandwiches since I have few if any matte glitters until these. I also heard they are 50% Off at Walgreens this week but my store was picked clean. at RA you also get $5 back in rewards bucks with their Wellness card so Win-win for me

  21. Stephanie says:

…and I will probably go back for the peach one with those Reward bucks, heh, making it free with a couple bucks to spare so I can get Jaded! did not know it was a crelly, very cool!

    • Michelle Mismas says:

I used my reward bucks to stock up on my self tanner, L’Oreal Sublime Glow. Love that stuff but hate that it’s $12

  22. I have Fuzz-Sea and really like it. Didn’t even attempt to make a solid layer of it, just used it on top of a lavender polish. It was very festive and got a lot of compliments. Next time I go to the store, I will probably get All Yarned Up or Peach Fuzz.

  23. stefanie says:

Saw the fuzzy coat collection at cvs and thought id give it a go. I picked up tweedy and fuzz sea. Used fuzz sea all by itself and it looks really good. I have to keep my nails fairly short because of my job and its hard to find a polish that looks nice and doesn’t accentuate my short fingers and nails. I love this I topped it off with the no chip acrylic top coat and so far its lasted 3 days with no issues.

  24. Liz says:

I love the polish and the way it looks, but is there a secret to removing it??? I am having a horrible time getting it off :(

    • Michelle Mismas says:

It’s a pain, that’s for sure. Just hold a pad with acetone remover on it for a few minutes and should slide off.

  25. Ximena says:

Hi, I recently go to the US and buy all these collection, but I try it on and have a lot of trouble taking it off, the base color goes off but the fuzzy still there, I wasted a lot of nail polish remover and like three hours, how do you take it off??? I really need a easiest way…

    • Michelle Mismas says:

Hi Ximena! I’m sorry to hear you had such issues with the polish. I just held a pad soaked in remover on my nail for a couple minutes and it wiped right off. You could try using felt squares with remover.

  26. TeeTee says:

I have every color. I bought them from Rite Aid when they were on sale. I like placing them over a pearl white base.
