Essie Resort 2013 “In The Cab-ana” Nail Polish Swatches & Review

Ever since Essie rocked my green & blue loving world in 2009 with the North Fork collection, the Resort colors are the ones I most look forward to seeing each year. And again, the First Lady of Nail Color did not disappoint. There’s something for everyone in Essie’s Resort 2013 well balanced range of creamy hues.

Resort is not only about jaunts to warmer climates. It’s also about striking bold color that’s fresh and flirtatious – and like you, we believe that boundaries and rules were meant to be broken. “I wanted to re-imagine sensual color in a way that is as unexpected as the modern woman herself.” says Essie Weingarten, Founder and Global Creative Director of Essie.

Formula & Application: Essie is a 3-Free brand. The square bottles are embossed with the Essie logo and the smooth plastic caps include an embossed ‘e’ on top. The brushes are thin, round and shorter than most. The bristles are very flexible, allowing you to easily fan out the brush to cover your nail width.

The Essie formula has a squishy, watery texture that  glides on the nail allowing for precise application. One of the major benefits of the Essie consistency, and a reason I’m a fan, is that it self levels. So even when you think you jacked up a nail with uneven application, give it a minute and the polish will settle out. All four shades in this collection are very well pigmented. I only needed two coats.

Essie Come Here! is a bright, pink-based coral creme. It’s pretty punchy in person though not quite neon. If you ran an electric current through Zoya Elodie, you’d have Come Here. They have similar base colors but Come Here is more pigmented and brighter.

Essie First Timer is a charged-up spring green creme. It’s pretty unassuming in the bottle but once it dries on your nails, it’s GAME ON! First Timer is a very close cousin of Illamasqua Nomad (link to Fashion Polish’s swatch). Almost close enough for me to use the word dupe. They are both very vivid blue-based greens. NOTE: First Timer changes color with top coat. It goes from a deep mint to the almost neon shade pictured here.

Essie In The Cab-ana is an aqua creme. At first glance, it looks VERY similar to Essie Where’s My Chauffeur? but when swatched, you see that WMC? is muted and closer to turquoise. In The Cab-ana is unique in that it’s not quite turquoise, yet it doesn’t fit in with the plethora of blues we’ve seen this spring (OPI Can’t Find My Czechbook, China Glaze Sunday Funday). Models Own Top Turquoise has a similar base though it’s a darker version.

Essie Under Where? is a lilac creme with a warm pink base. It’s a slightly darker version of L’Oreal Paris Lacey Lilac (L’oreal Paris is a sister company of Essie).

Bottom Line: The colors aren’t exactly earth shattering in their uniqueness yet In The Cab-ana and Come Here! are as gorgeous on their own as they are as a pair. I smell a mani/pedi change happening soon. And, if you don’t own Illamasqua Nomad, First Timer is a more pigmented, affordable option. Being that Under Where?, and all pink-based light purples, are my skin tone’s nemesis, it gets a pass from me.

Essie Madison Ave-Hue is available now at retailers nationwide. Visit Essie.com to find a store near you. Essie nail polish retails for $8/ea for a .46oz bottle.

I’m in love with this collection. My roommate just got it as a gift and obviously I had to borrow!

I caved and ordered this whole collection. I always love the resort releases, but had an issue with First Timer that I haven’t had since Tart Deco – When I applied it, it looked fairly true to bottle color, if slightly darker, and then when I applied a top coat it DRASTICALLY changed color! I was so pissed! I had a cute minty-green manicure, and then I added a coat of Seche and it turned a vivid highlighter green! Which, you know, is fine, but not what I was going for. (With Tart Deco, it went from peach to bright orange.) I tried it with two other topcoats, including an Essie one, and the same thing happened.

Did you try it with a topcoat?

Grace, thank you for calling this out! It’s something I forgot to put in the post originally. Yes, the color does change with top coat and I photographed it with top coat but accidentally left that out. I have updated the post. I knew there was another Essie color that this happened with but, off the top of my head, it wasn’t coming to me. I think it happened with another shade besides Tart Deco, no?

How does in the cab-Ana compare to china glazes for Audrey?

  4. wow, I love the all!!!!

  5. Kirstie says:

I freaking love this collection but I was kind of holding off since they didn’t look super unique however now you’ve said First Timer is like Nomad (I’d love to see a comparison, by the way!) I could be tempted if I spot a bargain (Essie is generally

    I love this collection!!!

  7. Danii says:

Interesting note: Sally Hansen has a color also called Lacey Lilac. Strange but still pretty and one I plan to buy ~ As for these Essie colors, they’re gorgeous and vivid but not my cup of tea at the moment!

  8. Squeaky says:

    I really like In The Cab-ana :)

  9. Joanna says:

In the Cab-ana is the perfect shade of turquoise for my summer clothes. A lot of turquoise nail polishes lean too green for my liking.

And Under Where? is the colour of nail polish I should have worn at my wedding (instead of French manicure)!

  10. I looove Essie Come Here!

  11. Olivia says:

    This collection is so gorgeous!

  12. Drool worthy shades! Would love to have them all in my stash. It’s a pity Australia is so behind the rest of the world. We’ll only get them 6 months later :(

  13. Melinda says:

OMG, that green! SUCH a fun color!

  14. eleanor says:

Wow!! I love the whole collection!!! It’s extremely gorgeous and i’ll have to pick up some bottles soon. I would say Come Here! is a great and cheaper dupe for Clinique Summer in the City, which I fell in love with almost instantly.
