“Slim Silhouette” Nail by Jin Soon for Sally Hansen at Prabal Gurung Spring 2012

For Spring 2012, Sally Hansen is continuing its successful designer collaboration with the innovative and colorful Prabal Gurung. Editorial Manicurist Jin Soon Choi is back for another season and this time she was challenged to create simple, elegant nail art. That resulted in a look she has dubbed the “slim silhouette.”

According to Jin, “[Prabal] said he wanted to have a softness with a strong statement.”  She shared that, “Sometimes it’s hard to do simple nail art. You can do crazy nail art, no problem, but simple nail art is hard to come up with. Prabal is so creative and he always pushes me to come up with something new.”

That something new involves polishing the entire nail with a pale lilac to give the look its softness then applying a darker shade just inside, leaving a ring of lightness around the rim. Jin chose Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Lacey Lilac to pair with Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Loves-Me-Not, one of the new shades from the Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen Spring 2012 collection. To be clear, “This is NOT a French Manicure or Reverse French. French Manicure is outdated.” Jin was adamant about that.

To me, this look is a cross between the Ruffian Manicure from Fall 2010 and the “Slimline” Technique I learned from CND’s Roxanne Valinoti. The Ruffian covers the sides of the nails and in a proper “slimline” the polish starts at the cuticle.

The Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen Spring 2012 nail polish collection was inspired by Nobuyashi Araki’s photographic series, “Sensual Flower.” These flowers are beautifully subversive, layered and at further glance very representative of Araki’s work – nuanced with a feminist twist and perverse undertone.

The Prabal Gurung for Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection will be available this Spring for $7.99/ea.

What do you think of the “slim silhouette” look? Is this something you will try at home? It would also look great using Barely Bluebell under Loves-Me-Not, don’t you think? Are you jazzed over the new Sally Hansen shades?

Ooh I like this, I want to try it with Chanel Blue Boy on the bottom, Blue Rebel on top. If only my order would hurry up and get here lol

  2. Red Stewart says:

This is a really interesting look; I wonder if it will catch on in the nail world. :o)

  3. Chris says:

The slim silhouette look is a cool way to wear two colors. And I agree with Jin: French manicures are way, way outdated.

  4. Marta says:

Oh my gosh. I NEED barely bluebell in my life!!!!!

  5. Pam says:

A VERY interesting look! Don’t know if I will try it at home, but I do like it.

  6. Emmy says:

I have been doing this for years! I used Who The Shrek Are You with BlackJack and everyone said it looked like eyes! LOL…I always got a ton of compliments on it, and I certainly didn’t think I was doing anything original, but now I see it’s the ‘hot’ thing for spring!? Cool!

  7. lciaravi says:

I like the look, and the colors in the collection look gorgeous! Thanks for the review and for the reminder that Spring is on the way! (-:

  8. Gail S says:

I like the look, but just because she says it’s not a reverse French doesn’t make it so!

    • kirsten says:

While yes her simply saying that doesn’t make it so it is still NOT a reverse french. If you look the light shade goes all the way from cuticle to tip on the sides which is not the case with a reverse french so Jin’s statement is absolutely correct. Futher proof: This I would actually wear whereas I would rather tear my nails off one by one than wear any form of french manicure.

      • Tikibwana says:

Seriously? Rip your nails off? Hyperbole much?

Because you may not like french manicures, but nail-ripping off is a form of torture…

  9. Olive says:

I love it! I am definitely going to try this next time I do my nails.

  10. Cryssi says:

I’m definitely going to be trying this out soon!

  11. Amanda says:

    I agree with you Gail S, that’s exactly what I see…

  12. Danielle says:

Love, love, love! These colors are so fresh. I could even wear them in winter!

  13. Steph says:

Great post! I am not thrilled about the Sally Hansen colors. They seem a bit…unoriginal.

  14. Emily says:

Love me not looks really pretty, but can you describe it? It looks like a deep purple duochrome, but I can’t be sure from the pictures.

  15. Oh, this is a great look!

  16. NailPolishFan says:

I loce these nail polish colors. I like the “nail art” as well.Sally Hansen has such a great line of naol polishes.

  17. Lin says:

I’m not sure. I like new idea’s but your nails look shorter. A lot shorter. I think I’ll try it.

  18. Hm… not sure about this look. It optically shortens the nail bed. People with very long nails beds might be able to pull it off nicely though.

  19. Jo says:

got my denim blue polishes and tried this with coco blue on bottom and blue rebel on top…..the color combo looks awesome but it was harder than it looks to not make this look sloppy. Need to practice with some cheaper colors first

  20. Noel711 says:

Several years ago there was a nail trend in
Italy.. I wanna say it was called the
‘Milan’? The technicque was a bold/bright
shade down the middle of the nail,
not to the side cuticle. Then the bold/bright
was covered with top coat, resulting in
a slim look. This seems to be a variation
    of that.

  21. Ter G. says:

I’ve never tried this line. I’ve worn the Xtreme Wear & the Fast dry ones. How’s the formula with these?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Complete Salon Manicure line. It’s my favorite drugstore line. The brush is flat and wide with a curved edge which can be a challenge for slim nail beds but it’s perfect for my wider shape and the formula wears really well, even without base or top coat. You can see my wear results HERE.

      • beachgal says:

Ditto here – with another love tacked on to yours on the end. I cannot believe it’s a drugstore line!

  22. Jackie S. says:

    Nice!

  23. Sarah says:

I can clearly see the difference on the artificial nails, but on on the model (and I suspect in real life), it’s hard to tell this apart from a Ruffian manicure. I think that’s a nice look, so I like this as well.

  24. telly says:

Very cool mani, but it looks too much like a French manicure to go through all that effort. I do have to say at this SH nail color is amazing. I have 3 colors and the only reason I don’t have more is because some colors are too similar to ones I already own.

  25. beachgal says:

Oh! It will be so wonderful if my rite aide gets new SH Complete Salon shades in. Since I was turned on to this brand and found I love the formula so much, the shades have not changed once at my rite aide or the times I have been out to other burgs around me where there is a CVS or a Walgreens to check – nope…they have the same shades. I saw a display for SH Complete at CVS which I guess was a summer display – but it was rapped and there was one bottle of a red only and I have maybe 14 red that are dead on to that one, so I did not pick it up esp not being on sale.

  26. Very nice collection of nail polish shades, classy and elegant. I would love to try this at home. only problem is, i don’t know how to apply my own nail polish – it’s always a mess. :D

  27. HEATHER says:

I don’t know about the mani but I love all 3 colors. I will definately get these when they come out.

  28. Reena says:

Can’t wait until this collection comes out!

  29. ashley says:

LOVES ME NOT……is AMAZING. i saw it at my ulta this week. you have to see it in person!!!!
