CND at NYFW – Checkerboard Nails at Nicole Miller Spring 2012

With the rise in popularity of “scotch tape manicures” amongst the DIY nail art fanatics, I see a lot of checkered nail styles roll by on my Tumblr. So I was quite thrilled to see this popular look pop up on the runway. CND injected bright pops of color and pattern at Nicole Miller’s Spring 2012 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

For Nicole Miller, Wanda Ruiz crafted glam rock checkered manicures using CND Colour in Raspberry Parfait and a custom mixed blue comprised of CND Colours in Anchor Blue, Dark Ruby, Eclectic Purple and added blue pigment. Nails were finished with one layer of Ice Blue Shimmer Effect.

CND Says: Create this look at home by doing a vertical sweep of pink down your nail, and do the same with a sweep of blue so each half of the nail is covered with a color. Then go over with each color for the opposite corners. Top all nails with Ice Blue Shimmer for a dazzling finish.

If your hand isn’t steady enough to hand paint straight lines of color, create checkers utilizing scotch tape. Check out the tutorial on Chloe’s Nails for great tips on how to create this look.

I love this. I did v shaped moons on my nails for the first time with tape, I will eventually do a checkerboard. I love that tutorial on Chloe’s Nails.

  2. I LOVE this!!! If I hadn’t just finished doing my mani I would definetly try this… Maybe tomorrow! I dont have any of the cnd effects but I’ll try the checkers for sure!

Unrelated to this post but so related to nailpolish:

I just stumbled upon TransDesign’s sale. Essie’s fall collection is now priced at $4 each instead of the usual $8. Hurray!

I’m sorry if there was an appropriate place for this message.

  8. ooh! what a great colour combination! I’m glad that we’re seeing more simplified nail ‘art’ on the runways. I Love nail art but I think they were getting a bit odd/too much for me personally.
I love the simplicity of this checkered nail!

I love checkerboard nails, and what an interesting way of doing them! I personally think it’s a bit easier to start out with a base coat of the lighter color, and then paint on the darker color in blocks. I get nice coverage on the darker color that way- but I’ll have to give this a try with the light color over the dark! Perhaps this is best with CND polish, as it’s so saturated. Awesome post- you expanded my brain!

I love this concept, but the colors not so much (I hate wearing pinks). I think I might try this with a light blue instead of the pink or maybe some purples.
