ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – OPI Sparrow Me The Drama with Silver Shatter

opi sparrow me the drama nail polish and opi silver shatter crackle nail polish 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.

What day is it? What time is it? I seriously have no clue at this point. The time change from Cleveland to Vegas has me in such a tailspin that I honestly have no idea if it’s Monday, Tuesday or Sunday. I rarely have this type of reaction to flying outside my own time zone but this trip is really throwing me off.

Maybe there’s something in the air because Deborah Lippmann mentioned this morning that she’s all out of sorts. That her typical spot-on sense of direction is so off that she keeps getting lost in the Mandalay Bay, a hotel she has stayed in many times. At least I fly home tomorrow night (gotta love the red eye) and will hopefully be back on track asap.

So far I have met some amazing people and seen lots of fun products and colors at Cosmoprof (more on that to come) but I had a major fangirl moment when I met Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, EVP & Executive Artistic Director of OPI. I’ve had the privilege to speak with some incredible people in this industry but Suzi has always been at the top of my nail bucket list and today I can finally cross her off. It seems only fitting that I meet her the day I delve into OPI Sparrow Me The Drama from the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides collection as part of my commitment to inject more pink/red into the 365.

Formula & Application: OPI is a 3-Free brand but some (not all) of the PotC polishes are 4-Free including Sparrow Me The Drama. They made the switch to 3-Free in 2008. You can identify an OPI with the 3-Free formula by the green lettering on the label. Bottles with black lettering have the old formula. The new 4-Free formula doesn’t have a different color writing on the label so always check the labels to be sure.

The OPI Pro Wide brush is flat, wide and medium in length. It’s of average stiffness and easily spreads out on the nail when pressed. The only downside to the Pro Wide brush is that it can be too wide for slim fingers or little toes.

The formula is thin and easy to work with but I found that the pigmentation was lacking some and it looked a little streaky/patchy in person. I ended up using three thin coats just to make sure I had proper coverage but someone who applies their polish a little thicker could probably get away with two coats.

OPI Sparrow Me The Drama is a nice middle-of-the-road pink creme. I appreciate that it’s a bit cool but not so much that people with warm/olive skin tones can’t get involved. You’ll have to forgive me for not presenting comparisons. Due to time constraints before I left for Vegas, I just wasn’t able to make it happen.

Of course I couldn’t leave a sleeping dog lie. I had to pump up the volume on this color with a little Shatter Attack. Since the creme shatters don’t do much for me and Silver Shatter was released to be worn with the Pirates hues, I went for it. I was honestly curious if there would be enough contrast both colors to make it interesting and while I’m steadfast in my anti-pink-ness, I do appreciate the funky flavor of this combo.

Remember: When working with Shatter, apply to a COMPLETELY DRY nail or else it won’t crack properly. You will get the best effect when the polish is dry.  Thin coats = more cracks and make sure you apply a top coat to prevent the Shatter from flaking off.

Bottom Line: Sparrow Me The Drama’s name is more entertaining than the actual polish. I mean, the color is fine but would you want to be described as “fine?” Neither does this pink lady. Regardless of my personal feeling on the color, I wish the formula was a little less streaky for all my pink lovers out there. The nice thin flow of the polish held such promise.

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: I’m just not feeling it… SHARE

OPI Sparrow Me The Drama from the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides collection is available now in limited edition at salons and spas nationwide including Beauty Brands, Beauty First, Chatters, Dillard’s, JCPenney, Pure Beauty, Regis, Trade Secret, and ULTA. OPI nail polishes retail for $8.50/ea for one .5oz bottles.

Thoughts on Sparrow Me The Drama? Do you like it better with or without Silver Shatter? How many of you love pink polish over all the other color families? Do you have a favorite pink that you think I would just FLIP over?

Love how the Silver shatter looks over Sparrow Me The Drama however I’m not one for pinks/reds either so probably won’t be getting it.

  2. Briana says:

oh so jealous you got to meet and talk to Suzi!

i did not ‘feel’ any of the shades out of POTC at all. I kept picking ‘em up, looking at them and putting them back at the beauty supply store about 60 miles from me. I looked at blog photos and still was not excited like so many were.

Well after all this time, I just ran into a set of 3 shades from POTC on eBay. I thought well if I were going to get anything out of the collection it would be Sparrow and Planks – those were 2 of the 3 – the 3rd was Steady As She Rose – nothing I would have picked out. But low and behold I won all 3 for $4.89 and I think it was around $2 shipping. I do like Sparrow because of the blue in it. It gets to that fuchsia love in me despite it’s more dusky, muted and certainly not fuchsia. I stashed that shade and will swap the other 2. Not into shatters/crackles so no silver that came out with this collection to go over the ones I have and don’t intend to get a silver unless it drops into my lap to play with from a friend. But I have to say, I like this silver on the Sparrow here and that’s rare for me to ever say I like a shatter. But you said it, dry base, and thin coat of shatter – seems the metallic shatters if done right don’t look like pieces of rubber tires burned onto your nails.

BTW – Glad you are having fun – your post today you sound tired and sure you are. Sleep is hard to come by at those things. Safe flight home!

  5. Katie says:

Nice combo! I picked up the Sinful Colors polish that looked similar to this pink. I didn’t want to spend more money on just a fine pink.

  6. Fingers says:

yeah I agree-i’m not feeling this pink or color combo at all! Definitely share!

  7. Sabine says:

I am really not into pink polish but this one looks ok to me because it is not too bright. However I don’t feel like that’s a color I would wear. I prefer the other shades from the POTC collection! The silver shatter is nice, I own this one and I like it best over contrasting dark colors…

  8. MikeyNotPeter says:

My favorite pink is still splash of grenadine :)

  9. Wowww that shatter worked well! I think I have been a bit impatient with mine sometimes!

I love & follow your blog, it’s great!
    :) Polish love!

  10. Chris says:

I know what you mean. This is pretty, but a little too girly for me.

  11. Renee says:

That is a really pretty pink. Looks better without the shatter, imho. I’m so OVER the whole shatter thing, though. I never really could get into it.

  12. Stef Smith says:

How did you feel about the Silver Shatter? Is that a Stash or a Share?

How does Deborah Lippmann look? I subscribe to SELF magazine and have seen that she’s lost a lot of weight, does she look amazing?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

She really looks fantastic! I first met her before she started documenting her weight loss and she was always an attractive woman but she looks even more fabulous now.

Oh, the Silver Shatter is a STASH. The metallic shatters are the only ones I like and I like the OPI one because the brush is wide so you need less strokes to get the nail covered. The faster you can apply the shatter, the more even it will look.

  13. Sam says:

I just borrowed this same colour from my Mom and was not much of a fan either. I don’t mind pinks and reds but it was just too purple and cool for my liking!

  14. Rachel Kurtz says:

I like this polish very much. It flatters my cool, fair skin tone and dark blonde hair. I even thought of picking up another bottle. I am skipping the shatter at my age, but bought it as I have 2 young ladies in the house who love the shatter. I wore it once, on my toes, over the Mermaid Tears green and it’s very pretty, but the fingernails remain shatter-free. Love your untrieds series!

  15. Sheena says:

The two colors are pretty separate but I don’t really like them together. The silver doesn’t stand out enough.

  16. Tiffany C. says:

I love sparrow me the drama and silver shatter works better for me when my polish underneath is still wet.

  17. Deb says:

Haha, sounds like the Vegas effect to me! I’m not a big partier or anything, but whenever I’m there, I have no idea what day or time it is!

Glad I skipped out on Sparrow Me the Drama. I only got Silver Shatter and Steady as She Rose from that collection.

  18. BEAUTIFUL combo! I really loved this collection

  19. Quinn says:

I can’t get enough of silver shatter! Love it. I have two bottles. Blue and Navy shatter are in a tie for second; all the rest I can do without, even Black.
I skipped on Sparrow Me the Drama ( aka Pepto Pink) but did get Steady As She Rose. Really like the greyed out baby pink.

  20. moeysullivan says:

it’s, um, so ’80′s somehow. And not in a good way.

  21. Laura says:

I’m neither a fan of pink nor of crackle polishes, but this combination looks amazing. I’ve already seen it on tumblr a couple of times, but in your pictures it looks even better (and I was already blown away before!). Seriously, I’m pretty sure I’ve never loved a combination of two polishes so much before.

Feel free to share it with me ;)

  22. Mallory says:

    1) I’m not very impressed with the Pirates of the Caribbean collection at all. I think they could have done a lot more with it, color wise. Sparrow Me the Drama is no exception.

    2) Have you tried OPI It’s All Greek To Me? I was never a fan of pink polish before I tried this one. I needed something for my toes before a wedding and the only polish my mom had that wasn’t didn’t scream ‘old lady’ was that one. No lie, I fell in love with it. It’s not a cream, but it’s not overly shimmery either. I also like OPI Wing It! because of the purple shift and glass fleck look.

  23. Christine says:

I worked at an Ulta when these came out– I remember being super excited for the silver shatter. I was pretty disappointed with the Pirates colors after we did the swatches, though, because none of them really pop with the silver.

  24. Pamela Heinbaugh says:

I actually think that color pink look’s awesome with your skin tone. But if it’s that streaky, it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth. I liked it better w/o the silver shatter.

  25. james says:

Yeah, I work at Salon Centric & while everyone practically went into histerics over the silver shatter, no one really liked the “Pirates” collection..alot of people said they looked like Easter colors (which I agree). The silver shatter looks amazing on top of a black color..I had the nail tech(I also work at a salon) try it on me & she added a glitter topcoat. Even as a dude, I got MAJOR compliments..Btw, I love ur blog!

  26. kaydi says:

I passed on SMtD but I do have Silver Shatter. Are you stashing that one? I am wearing Cult Nails Deviant Nature and absolutely love it! Not only is the formula perfection, but its super glossy and highly pigmented. I’m sure there are plenty of pinks in the same family, but this one is so much fun! Jelly/cremes are my fave finish lately. Do try it!

  27. DesertNails8 says:

I like it with the shatter better as I’m not a big pink or red fan.

  28. Seana says:

I absolutely ADORE Sparrow Me The Drama!! For me, It’s the PERFECT pink and it seems to go with every single item in my closet. I personally like it by itself, I have tried it out with OPI’s Black Shatter and I think that Sparrow Me The Drama is meant to be worn alone.

  29. Jennifer says:

I don’t know the exact color, but I have a bubble-gum colored Essie polish that I’ve worn several times this year. Love it.

  30. Liz says:

Agreed, the Pirates Collection was unimpressive.

  31. LeAnn says:

Try a coat of silver crackle over turquoise polish. It’s gorgeous!

  32. Orly’s Basketcase is my favorite nail polish color. It’s pink. It’s awesome. I love it. It looks so different on than in the bottle.

  33. Shelby says:

I LOVE the Sparrow Me The Drama!!! I think it looks fabulous with a mixed skin tone like I have! And the shatter just tops it off perfect! I love everything about it, but pink is also my favorite color! :)

  34. Brian says:

I wasn’t to big a fan of the Shatter line. I waited so long for it, but maybe that’s it. I have this overwhelming tendency to hype myself beyond all measure for something, but when I get what I wanted, the item/object just falls flat. I experienced that disappointment when I purchased the White Shatter. It reminded me of gunky white out. Still, I will say that I have always been an OPI fan, and I always will be. One bad experience won’t turn me away so easily. OPI has been an accessory to not only my look, but my life. That being said, I do like Sparrow Me The Drama. I’m a big fan of pinks in general. My favourite pink of all, though, is MAC’s Duo-Pink. Anyone else remember that? I think it was retired in late 2006. Oh, I loved it so!

  35. Rainbow says:

IDK how the heck you got your Silver Shatter to crackle so nicely…I’ve used about a quarter of my bottle already just trying to get it to work and it never does!

  36. Anne-Laure says:

I actually prefer darker or brighter pinks… with a hint of coral or a splash of purple in it (like OPI Diva of Geneva, the OPI glittery pink in the Katy Perry collection – forgot the name), or Chanel Morning Rose…
Soft baby pinks and barbie pinks do me nothing! I’m not five years old anymore ^^
This one looks better under the silver shatter! The combo is really nice, even though I don’t like shatters AT ALL (too grunge for me), the silver one is the only shatter I could think about wearing, and it looks fine on pink!

  37. MissDoll says:

I don’t like this pink but with silver shatter looks amazing!!!!
