ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – Orly Bubbly Bombshell & Here Comes Trouble from the Orly Pin-Up Collection

orly here comes trouble and orly bubbly bombshell nail polish from the orly pin-up collection for summer 2011 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.Dear Glitter Polishes,

Why can’t I quit you? You’re such a pain to remove that the dread sets in before the first stroke of polish hits the nail. Yet, like a magpie, every time I see a bottle I want to snatch it up and take it home to my stash. You’re clearly my crack because when the high wears off, I’m just left with thoughts of the removal process looming overhead. In spite of all that, I love you. And if loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

XOXO, ALU

The glitter craving struck again when I spotted the display for the Orly Pin-up collection at my local CVS. The four piece collection includes two cremes that I barely noticed. My eyes darted straight to Here Comes Trouble (l) and Bubbly Bombshell (r). For today’s untrieds manicure I decided to combine them into one summery sparkle spectacular.

Formula & Application: Orly nail polish is 4-Free (including formaldehyde resin) and does not contain camphor, which can be an irritant. Orly polishes come with the fan fave rubberized cap. That signature easy-to-grip topper makes it easy to control the polish. The brush is long and thin with flexible bristles. I personally would like it if there were more bristles to get more coverage in each stroke.

Both of these polishes are semi-sheer glitters with clear or lightly pigmented base colors.  The pigment in the actual polish doesn’t bring much to the coverage party so expect to rely solely on the glitter. Like most glitter polishes, the base formula is kind of squishy which I assume helps suspend the glitter particles, keeping them well dispersed. I used three medium coats of each polish to get as close to full coverage as possible. I can still see bits of my nails through some spots but I REALLY have to look for it.

Orly Bubbly Bombshell is a clear based glitter that was described by Orly as purple but I would call it a deep fuchsia. The glitter particles are very similar in hue to the sequins in Deborah Lippmann Bad Romance and a touch lighter than Nubar Petunia Sparkle, though definitely in the same color family.

Orly Here Comes Trouble has a sheer lime green base packed with vibrant kelly green glitter. The base makes the polish look kind of muddled in the bottle but it comes to life on the nail. Surprisingly, I don’t have any polishes, let alone glitter polishes, quite this shade. Zoya Apple shares the same zip code but it’s not nearly as vivid. I have some emerald and lime glitters but they’re either too dark or too yellow. Looks like my green polishes better make some room in the Helmer.

What makes these glitters unique is that all the particles are one color yet there are two distinct shapes and sizes. There is a boat load of fine, almost powdered micro-glitter, intermixed with larger hexagonal pieces. Whatever color variances you see on screen are simply due to the light.

Bottom Line: If you’re a glitter junkie like me, you need to get on board with these. The glitz factor is off the charts and the boldness of the color makes them perfect for summer. I really love Bubbly Bombshell as an accent with Here Comes Trouble. It’s like one perfect peony in a field of grass. Now I’m not sure what the colors have to do with the concept of a pin-up girl but it’s a glitter party, who cares!

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: I’m definitely STASHing them both but I’m sending Nubar Petunia Sparkle & its twin Nicole by OPI Glitz & Glisten to the SHARE bin in their place. See, I’m not stashing everything.

Orly Bubbly Bombshell and Here Comes Trouble are available now as part of the Summer 2011 Pin-up collection. They are available at Sally Beauty, ULTA, CVS and online at OrlyBeauty.com, Head2ToeBeauty.com and shipping July 1st from TransDesign.com. Orly nail polishes retail for $6-8/ea depending on the store, for a .6oz bottle.

Are you a glitter girl? Thoughts on today’s manicure? Will you be adding either of these to your stash? Do you know of a glitter similar to Here Comes Trouble? What is your favorite type of glitter polish? Smooth glitter? Multi-sized particles? Multi-colored? Do you prefer big chunky sequins or micro-glitter?

These are the best swatches I’ve seen so far. Makes me a little sad I decided to skip them :(

  2. Maggie says:

I love these glitters! However, when I read, “Yet, like a magpie, every time I see a bottle I want to snatch it up and take it home to my stash,” I just couldn’t help but picture you hoarding magpies in your polish room xD

  3. Maria says:

i love these nail polishes ever so much! although bubbly bombshell looks horrible on my skin . .! great swatch.!

  4. Dang, now I need both of those!

  5. Kyra says:

I am wearing Bubbly Bombshell now. I love it.

Do you have any tips on taking it off? I’ve had it on for a week.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Pure acetone will cut through it the fastest. I suggest slathering your skin and cuticle with oil or lotion first to prevent them from drying out. Just soak a cotton ball or removal pad and let it sit for a few minutes. The longer it sits, the easier it will remove but you need to be patient, which I am not, ha!

  6. Alaina says:

Wow! That is some amazing glitter. I usually end up using my glitters for pedis, they wear like iron.

  7. Kim says:

Beautiful! So glad I picked up Here Comes Trouble at Sally the other day. I skipped Bubbly Bombshell, but I may have to go back for it.

  8. Kim Teague says:

I have a slight nail polish obsession, but I tend to stay away from metalic and intense glitter; however I have an addiction to purple ….so I’m torn. They are both gorgeous, but I can’t decide if I should get Bubbly Bombshell or not.

  9. I’ve been obsessed with glitter recently. Now that I had to chop my nails extremely short wearing glitter polish has become a lot easier. I’m definitely buying these two.

  10. autoxchica says:

So how exactly does one get on your ‘share’ list? :)

    • All Lacquered Up says:

The majority of the products I don’t keep are part of a charity beauty sale I host with local bloggers each year with the proceeds benefiting a different charitable organization. The rest go to friends and family.

  11. Adrianna says:

I really like these two! I am very anti-glitter at the moment though. I’m on the fence about giving away Lippmann’s “Happy Birthday” because it’s such a pain!

  12. Paz says:

I normally am not a fan of glitter but I LOVE LOVE LOVE these!!! Now to see if they sell them here in BC, Canada!

  13. Tammie says:

I’d be a glitter girl but I don’t like spending an hour scrubbing the hell out of my nails to remove it :(. Any removal suggestions so I can get in on the glitter party??

    • All Lacquered Up says:

The longer you can stand to soak the glitter in acetone, the easier it is to remove. Soak some cotton in acetone and let it sit on the nail. Some people prefer to wrap the cotton in foil but I don’t find it necessary. It’s just a waste of foil to me.

  14. Jen K says:

I have both on my Wanted list, but haven’t been able to find them anywhere yet. So pretty!

  15. Dianna says:

As for removal, try the foil method.
I.E: Cotton Pad soaked in nailpolish remover on nail – foil on top. Wait a minute or two and pull it all off.

    Might work!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Oh I’ve tried the foil/soak-off method and I always find that it takes longer than a minute or two. Regardless, I just hate the scratching feeling of removing glitter, no matter what method I use.

  16. CupK8 says:

That green is calling my name.

  17. NailPolishFan says:

I love these, they would be great for layering.

  18. Sarah says:

LOVE LOVE these two. They’re the only ones I have out of the collection and they are AWESOME. However, they are such an incredible pain to remove that I never want to wear them. IMO these are more difficult to remove than the average glitter…I’m not sure why. I even tried putting them over a similar base color and the base color came off before the glitter!! I really love them though..so hopefully I find a solution to the removal problem because I don’t think I can live without wearing them..haha!

  19. wendy says:

i LOVE glitter and also featured bubbly bombshell on my blog about a week ago. it’s so beautiful, glittery, and a must have!

  20. gwenstella says:

    these colours are amazing!!!! :D

  21. vettelicious says:

I was quite disappointed to see that Here Comes Trouble has a yellow-ish base – I don’t think that’s very flattering – and so I haven’t worn it yet. Still thinking of a way to get around the yellow base, lol. I am, however, completely smitten with Bubbly Bombshell, I must get that one! :)

  22. sticksandtunes says:

I have Bubbly Bombshell (which instantly became one of my favorite glitters), and I really need to get my hands on Here Comes Trouble. Orly needs to release more colors in this glitter formula…I adore it.

I was surprised how easy it was to build Bubbly Bombshell to full coverage…first coat had me thinking that I should have grabbed something to wear under it, but I think it reached full coverage by coat four. The good news is that it was surprisingly easy to remove compared to most glitters…still harder than normal polish, but nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be.

It also looks killer with matte topcoat.

  23. Gwen says:

They’re so pretty! They look awesome together.

  24. Dbunnies says:

I just had to look up OPI Glitz & Glisten just to see the dupe and bubbly bombshell is miles better! The glitter shapes are just too spectacular. Oh, google don’t fail me now!

  25. Nicole says:

I love wearing glitter polishes but removal was always a pain till I found out how to do it easily. Pls check youtube and search for “foil method” to remove nailpolish, especially glitter nail polishes. I’ve tried it and it really works. That really made me happy because now I can wear my glitter polishes without having in mind the removal process.

The Orlys look lovely on you!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Hey, thanks for the suggestion but I’ve heard of the “foil method” which is more widely known by professionals as the “soak off” method. I know that it works but it takes time and I’m impatient so no matter what glitter removal method I use, none of it is simple and easy.

  26. Karen says:

I love them both! I think I’ll try a coat of bombshell over Essie’s Splash of Grenadine.

  27. Paula says:

The fuschia color is awesome! I love glitter polish, but hate trying to remove them also. I keep a bottle of straight acetone on hand just for that reason. Non-acetone remover just doesn’t do the job and I refuse to give up the glitter!

  28. jen says:

Damn. They look lovely. Like you, I wish I could quit the glitters, but my inner 5 year-old fairy princess just won’t let that happen. Sigh…

  29. Shaina says:

    Gorgeous, gorgeous!

  30. melina bee says:

these seem really fun, especially the fuchsia but I don’t know if I need any more nail polish at the moment

  31. SB_Sweetie says:

Bubbly Bombshell will be mine. Perfect to cheer me up on this foggy day!

  32. Aesthetic LA says:

I think it is absolutely wonderful that you participate in a charity sale with part of the extra products you have. My heart warmed when I read that!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Aww, thank you! I remember reading about magazines holding similar sales so I was inspired. Last year I raised over a $1,000 for Living Beyond Breast Cancer. I hope to raise even more this year.

      • meme says:

Thank you from a X1 breast cancer survivor who is now having a revisit with it 15 yrs past my first round.

  33. meme says:

I am like you – my eye goes right to the glitters. But my hand does not reach for them like it used to. I think the OPI Burlesque collection sort of was my capper for helping me to end my gotta have a ton more of ‘em. But I have to say, this fushia one is calling my name. As for your questions, I like ‘em all – small, same glitter shapes, different glitter shapes – you name it. They sparkle, I like ‘em – except for the removal like many comment on and is the reason in large part why I don’t buy them but a rare one now days.

  34. Emily says:

I have both and they are amazing. great coverage for glitters and both perfect colors for toes. I did opposing polka dots on my toes a few weeks back-so cute. not that bad to remove compared to some glitters imo. and I agree- the foil method is a waste of time. pure acetone with cute right to the chase.

  35. Rachel says:

Oooh! I was not expecting much from these two, but now that I’ve seen these swatches, I might have to rethink that. I really like that the glitters are the same color but come in two different shapes. That makes it really interesting, I think.

  36. Karoline - Nationail Photographic says:

I love love LOVE these!!! :) Luckily I have the green one on its way :) I really love all types of glitter. As long as it sparkles!! :) I agree about the removing, I use the foil method, but it does take time as you say! :P Never mind, the beautiful glitters are worth it!! :P

  37. TracyLee says:

Luxe Glitter Polish Removal Tip: Use Felt! Buy a piece of felt at your local arts and crafts store…cut into small squares. Soak felt with Polish Remover, acetone or non-acetone, place on top nail polish for approx 10 sec and begin wiping. The glitter sticks right to the felt, and doesn’t move onto the skin. EZ Breezy, No Mess! Good Luck!! xo TracyLee

TracyLee- what a coincidence-I just got felt to try! Great hint-I’m so glad to know it works- YAY!
