ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – Sephora by OPI Let’s Plié

sephora-by-opi-lets-plie-nail-polish-urban-ballerina-365-untrieds 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.

While everyone was buzzing about the Sephora by OPI Glee collection, the more low-key Urban Ballerina collection quietly came on the scene. Given the hype surrounding Black Swan, I’m amazed that the collection didn’t get more lip service.

As a little girl I was always obsessed with dance and dance movies, watching films like Fame and Flashdance way before I was old enough to see them. I even took ballet lessons for a hot second before admitting that I lacked the natural talent and coordination required.

Now even though I’m known for my love of bold nail color, I have moments where I want a more subdued feminine look so I took Sephora by OPI Let’s Plié for a spin on the dance floor.

Formula & Application: Sephora by OPI nail polishes are 3-Free. The distinctive bottle shape is capped with a smooth, thick, rounded cap. My only major complaint with the cap is that it’s so slippery that it can make opening the polish difficult. Keep a rubber band on hand to twist it open.

The brush is thin and round and reminds me of the old OPI brushes (pre Pro-Wide era). For some reason, this brush in this color didn’t spread out so I needed more strokes than usual to cover the name.

Let’s Plié applies nice and thin but it’s lacking pigmentation so it goes on semi-sheer and streaky. So streaky in fact that I ended up applying four thin coats to get it opaque. Even at four coats, the finish wasn’t perfect. It ended up looking kind of chalky.

SOPI Let’s Plié is a peachy nude with silver mica. It looks like a pearl in the bottle but on the nail, the tiny shimmer particles are more apparent. It reminds me of those fabulous Chanel subtle shimmer polishes that are so popular.

I don’t want the word peachy to scare my cool toned Fanatics away. The base color isn’t as peachy as Deborah Lippmann Before He Cheats. In fact, it’s a pretty close match to the recently launched spring hue, CND Perfectly Bare.

Bottom Line: While the color is beautiful, I might even consider it my “Mannequin Hands” shade, the pigmentation and application issues are a major downside.  Four coats is unacceptable unless the color is truly unique and irreplaceable.

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: SHARE

Sephora by OPI Let’s Plié and the rest of the Urban Ballerina collection is available now at Sephora stores nationwide and online at Sephora.com.  Sephora by OPI nail polishes retail for $9.50/ea for a .5oz bottle.

Did the Urban Ballerina collection catch your eye? Thoughts on Let’s Plié? Do you have any four coat polishes are special enough to deal with the need for extra coats?

  2. Susie says:

I missed Urban Ballerina and I’m always looking for the new collections. While not excited by this color, I am anxious to see the other shades in the collection.

  3. Lesley says:

reminds me a little of China Glaze’s Sunset Sail.

  4. Serena says:

Today, I used FIVE coats for Not Like the Movies, but still totally love it.

I don’t think Let’s Plie would be worth it for me.

Is it awful that I am reading nail polish blogs just minutes after Obama’s speech?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Clearly you won’t be reprimanded by me as I was writing the post up until Obama came on.

    • Ronnie says:

My facebook post said “Osama’s dead. Wow. What a moment. Can I please get back to my nail polish now?”

All things considered, I think you’re better than me :D.

I looked and played with the samples in this collection and those I tried in store all seemed to lack the pigmentation. I knew they were going to be a 3 coat at least. Not surprised that you have 4. That is just not doing it for me. I always end up with sheet marks when I get polish on that thick no matter how long I have let it dry. Good color, but too much trouble – good call on the SHARE.

  6. I suprisingly really like the color of this, but the pigmentation and application issues you mentioned ruined it for me. :( I really like the way it looks on you though!

  7. Meeka says:

I do like the shimmer in this, it makes for quite a pretty peachy nude. However, like you, 4 coats for a plain color is not good enough.

  8. Cat says:

Sucks about the application issues. Four coats? That’s really unfortunate, because I kinda like the color and currently don’t have anything like it in my stash. But since it’s sold out on Sephora’s website, I guess it’s not a problem anyway.

I seem to be finding that the SOPI (or $OPI) polishes lack pigmentation and need to be applied in three or four coats. Not all of them, of course, but several that I’ve tried recently have been the same.

  9. CupK8 says:

It’s a nice color, but four coats? No thanks. I don’t own any that require more than three, and many of them only require two. I haven’t yet come across a color that I like enough to deal with serious application issues.

  10. Stephanie says:

Too bad about the four coats thing, because I absolutely adore the color. It’s so soft. And the name, of course. OH PUNS. Best.

  11. Susan says:

I thought this collection was kinda meh… I like BRIGHT colors and sparkles! There was a gray that I liked, but it was too similar to ones that I already had.

  12. What a shame about the application! The shade is so beautiful

  13. Shaina says:

Pretty color, reminds me of ChG Sunset Sail.

  14. Barb says:

I love OPI’s colors, but this one that I’m not super crazy about. I did look up the collection, Urban Ballerina, on Sephora’s website, and I like the Shiny Dancer much more!

  15. allison says:

still a fan of mannequin hands – I have on Essie “rock candy” right now but needed another coat.

  16. Andrea says:

I absolutely love nudes but this one looks too peachy for my skin tone. I know that you said it’s not too peachy for cool-toned gals, like myself, but I still think it would make my hands looks yellow.

I often do four coats of nudes and don’t mind at all because it’s so well worth it when it ends in such a beautiful manicured look.

  17. lam says:

Pretty, but too peachy for me.

  18. Shirley says:

    I realy love the color.
    But 4 coats is much…

  19. Aleta says:

It looks way better on you than it did on me, for me it came out really white with no noticeable shimmer. And the application was a nightmare, four coats to get coverage and it looked goopy. The only SOPI shade I’ve had good luck with is Run With It.

  20. Maribeth says:

It’s too bad the application is iffy….I love the shimmer in it!

  21. Rebecca says:

This is a pretty color but the Sephora by OPI formulation and brush is one of my least favorites.

  22. Sarah says:

I want it but its sold out at Sephora. I know it takes way too may coats, but I still think it is super pretty.

  23. Phoebe says:

I love this color, but the streakiness and formula issues make me not want to buy it.

Is there a color you can recommend that’s a dupe but has better formulation?

  24. Joan says:

What is the nail polish by the name of Butter.
Nordstrom just got it in and I am wondering how it wears.

  25. Molly says:

I used this, then did a little bit of the SOPI Traffic Stopper Copper top coat/french manicure with it. It made for a fun twist, and really loved the line.
