ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – Chanel Morning Rose

chanel-morning-rose-nail-polish-le-vernis-365-untrieds 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.

“I wore a pink and I liked i-it! I hope my polish friends don’t mind it.” I’ve been blasting Katy Perry in my polish room all day so while I was applying today’s 365 of Untrieds color, my altered version of that lyric created an earworm that I can’t seem to get rid of.

The point is, I am wearing pink nail polish today and I don’t hate it. SPOILER ALERT - I’m actually kind of in love with it.  I suppose that ruins the whole stash/share verdict for today but I hope you’ll keep reading to see why I’m so smitten with Chanel Morning Rose.

Formula & Application: Chanel nail polish is 4-Free (includes formaldehyde resin) plus there’s no camphor, which can be an irritant. The signature square glass bottles are topped with a black square outer cap that is removed to reveal a stubby, round, ribbed inner cap. The brush is round, medium in length and width and reminds me of the old OPI/new SOPI brushes. It easily fans out and covers the nail without much resistance.

While I was applying this color I couldn’t help but thinking the formula is so “Manicures for Dummies” in that it’s pretty goof proof for novice at-home manicurists. It’s not that this polish specifically is better than others but this type of formula, squishy, jelly-ish, light colored, is great for beginners. You can pretty much slap it on and have it look good since it levels out easily, doesn’t show unevenness in application around the cuticle and is barely visible on the skin should you make a mistake. Morning Rose ended up needing three coats but it applied phenomenally well and dried nice and glossy, like a jelly.

Chanel Morning Rose is just as the name implies, a warm rosy pink with gold, flaky micro-glitter that reflects the light the way morning rays of sun would. I’ve always tended to lean towards warmer pinks and when I was in my pink heyday circa 2005 I was all about Essie Ball-timore, a rosy pink shimmer. Morning Rose reminds me of that old favorite.

Okay so a while back I saw a manicurist (either Kimmie Kyees or Sophy Robson) tweet about buying 14K gold Chanel logo decals online and I just HAD to get them. I know, I know logos can be tacky, like people dripping in Louis Vuitton Monogram, but I figure I get a pass if I’m wearing it on Chanel polish. I’m at least not trying to fake it, right?

The decals come flat so I suggest waiting for your polish to dry, sans top coat, so you can lightly bend the decal to fit the curve of your nail without messing up your mani. Place the decal with a toothpick and lightly press in place.  Add a layer of top coat and you should be good to go.  If you are concerned about losing it, you can use a bit of nail glue on the decal but I don’t find it necessary.

To give you an idea of how Morning Rose compares to some past Chanel pinks, I’m showing it next to Mica Rose, Mistral, Ming and Flamingo.

chanel-morning-rose-comparison-2

While Mistral is probably the closest in terms of texture and finish, it’s much cooler toned than Morning Rose.  Ming has the most similar base color though it’s not as pigmented and has shimmer rather than micro-glitter.  Mica Rose and Flamingo are both way off but thought they might be a good reference point for those who own them.

Bottom Line: I love everything about Morning Rose. The color is my ideal shade of pink. Not too light, not too bright, just warm enough to complement my skin tone. And the gold flecks actually show up unlike the Chanel that stole Morning Rose’s thunder (I’m looking at YOU Mimosa). As far as the Chanel Summer Collection is concerned, this is the true nail polish winner. Don’t waste your dinero on Mimosa, spend it on Morning Rose instead.

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: Surprise, surprise I’m STASHing it.

Chanel Morning Rose is available at Chanel counters nationwide and online at Chanel.com. Chanel nail polish retails for $25/ea for a .4oz bottle. Chanel 14K nail decals can be purchased from Esther’s Nail Center for $3.75 for 48 decals.

Okay what’s your verdict on my Chanel decals? Are they are win or fail? Thoughts on Morning Rose? How many of you bypassed the much ballyhooed Mimosa for Morning Rose? Yes, I used “ballyhooed” in a sentence. I’m old!

Disclosure: I purchased Morning Rose and the Chanel decals. For more info view my Disclosure Policy.

  1. The gold shimmer totally makes the polish. Actually the pink would be really pretty on its own too. It looks like it has a touch of coral in it.

  2. Cincly says:

I despise pinks with a passion, but i’m starting to warm u to this one!

  3. Duffi says:

I’m in shock. I like this! I’m wondering if it would make my older hands look even older though (like some reds do). It sure looks great on you.
I even kinda like that decal. & I am the anti-logo person.

  4. sb_sweetie says:

I tried this in person at Nordstrom when it was on pre-order. Immediately decided that I NEEDED to have it. It’s a very special pink. Glad it wasn’t just me!

  5. Chris says:

Oh Wow I LOVE the decal and I normally find such display of brand names way tacky and show-off-y! But as everything about Chanel, their logo is very elegant, and it looks so good on this particular pink!

I am a safe-nail colour person so I may just look for the beautiful colour when I go shopping tomorrow! Thanks for the review! :)

  6. Marie says:

Hmmm, I might have to splurge on my first Chanel polish…

  7. Ann says:

    That decal is adorable!

  8. Caitlin says:

While I was looking at the pictures I was thinking to myself that it looked a lot like Ming, but then I saw that you were way ahead of me :)

  9. Serena says:

I am totally the same in that I don’t tend to like pinks. But I was totally loving swatches of this and not feeling Mimosa. Thank you for confirming my Chanel Summer 2011 nail polish choice.

I am dying to see Graphite; July cannot come soon enough.

  10. Meg says:

OMG that Chanel decal is so cute!

  11. Pamela says:

That is one of the prettiest pink’s I think I’ve ever seen. And it look’s great with your skin color. I’d LOVE to have it, but as sure as I ordered that, it would show up on a day my hubby is at home & he already knows what Chanel polish costs. He would have a fit…LOL.

  12. Jo says:

I’m generally not a fan of pinks, but this is quite pretty!

  13. Lauren says:

    So pretty! I just may…
The decal I can do without, but I’m not judging. ;)

  14. Christine says:

I love love love it – I actually came here today specifically to see if I could find a nice pink because I got a flash of “I want a pink” so imagine my surprise when this was right at the top. Problem is, I really really can’t justify spending 25 bucks on nail polish. Any suggestions for a more reasonably priced dupe? (Like about half of what Chanel wants) Had a look at your swatch of Essie’s Ball-timore and it’s not as warm as this one :(

  15. Sarah says:

I love this color so much and I’m normally not a pink person. Are there any colors by other brands that are comparable? Chanel is a little out of my price range. :(

  16. Maribeth says:

This is a great shade of pink for sure! I have never bought a Chanel polish….BUT….this is way cute and it is going to be nagging me if I don’t give in ;-) And I, too, am an “anti logo” person, but somehow find that one to be darling!

  17. Anna says:

I think I have to stop reading your blog – now I have to get Morning Rose too! I just bought Grey by Grey yesterday… :)

    • meme says:

Don’t stop reading…just get hold of the fact we cannot all buy everything we want! I have to admit to going and buying Grey by Grey too after seeing it here, but only because I hit a buy one get 50% off next sale…what I try to do to cube my ‘I want more than I can afford’ is to think about those I have I really love I have not worn or not worn more than once. Then also revisiting my favs that used to me my go to shades. I rediscover my own collection all the time! Also wishing I had a rich friend totally into polish who buys a ton and then shares a ton! I need to find an honest share/trade polish group!

  18. Mary says:

Why do so many people seem to dislike pink nail polish? Seems like I read that a lot, LOL. I think this is a gorgeous coral-y pink and love the gold sparklies! The decal is so cute and I know my daughter would love it. I may have to go do a search for those!

  19. Chris says:

This color is totally beautiful, and I am not even a fan of pinks!

  20. Nicole says:

    Love it!

  21. Joan says:

Looks very beautiful and I probably will try it.

  22. Misch says:

I love it! i’ve been searching for a dupe for a while now, but I can’t come up with one…:)

  23. Sarah says:

I am not at all a pink fan, but that is lovely! Any close, more affordable dupes, or well, anything in the same ballpark, just less expensive? I can barely bring myself to shell out $20+ for a shirt, much less a nail polish…

  24. meme says:

I also echo what Jessie said about sensing a hint of coral to this pink. I love it. Like the tish of gold in it. I am not a light pink person and have not been for eons. I tend not to go lighter than Essie’s Touch of Grenadine. But this one is peaked my interest. I ADORE your CC 14kt logo…hate to think at today’s gold price what a tiny CC logo would cost now! I will be down in an area teaming with big mall shops this week 500+ miles from home for a pre op 3 day session. I am going to try to find time to look at polish that I never get to see but on line. I will keep my eyes open when I go to the Channel counter. Thanks so much for being in a pink mood today! You cheered me up. I was getting a bit nervous over my upcoming surg and having to stay as outpatient at the hospital for 1 mo. post op.

  25. meme says:

Forgot to read all your ‘directives’ before I posted, see now that the CC decals are not that pricy! Ummm. I might get one and I do applaud you for wearing it – it’s A-OK with me, despite I am not a decal or nail art person 99.999% of the time. I like on rare occasion to put a line of silver glitter glue along the outer end of my toe polish. That’s nail art for me! I cannot wear yellow polish well at all – so I surely would by-pass all the hoopla for Mimosa. I look ill in yellow polish – light or bright. It would be only something I would pick up in a mini off brand at Sallys just to play with 1 time and then share it along. Besides I thought yellow was all the rage last summer. Why the hype about Mimosa this summer just has me befuddled. Curious to hear your feedback to us thinking we are seeing some touch of coral in Morning Rose – especially on vs. not as much on the faux nails. Maybe that is just your own coloring giving us that coral look on our monitors?

  26. Andrea says:

Wow! Your collection of pink Chanel polishes is amazing. You should do one of those Youtube nail polish collection videos; although, I think it’d be much more than just one video!

  27. Pamela says:

I have 3 computers going & all 3 monitors show this polish as sort of a warm pink with a touch of coral. I would love to find a dupe for this. And I’m still thinking about taking a chance & ordering this. I already have 3 China Glaze colors coming that you reviewed & I loved…LOL. Any other married women on here that have to sneak & order polishes because your hubby know you already have WAY to many? Just wondering.

  28. meme says:

Just curious what U do when you don’t stash but swap? Do you have buddies you swap with or am I missing out on part of this blog world where there are groups of folks that swap on a regular basis?

  29. Katie says:

This is absolutely beautiful. I thought Paradoxal would be my first and only Chanel splurge, but this one is just too pretty!

    • meme says:

Paradoxal was my only Chanel also Katie! Now I will be getting this one this week when I head to the BIG city 500 miles away for medical ‘stuff’ and there’s a mall there with a Nordies and a couple other large dept stores that carry Chanel. Maybe I should call ahead and have them save me one. I would hate to get there and find they were out.

    • Caity says:

I recently snagged a bottle of Paradoxal at duty-free, it was my first bottle of Chanel :) No international trips planned anytime soon, so I may have to bite the bullet and actually order this one, I think that I’m in love with it…

  30. Debra says:

I purchased this color. It is glorious. Truly a spring/summer color. Looks great on my 57 year old hands! A pink for all ages.

  31. Mc Huggs says:

Chanel Morning Rose looks yummy on you Michelle, even love the 14K Gold Chanel Emblem, looks lovely and love the pink you in. What is it about the color pink this year? It’s like everyone seems to be wearing that color, it’s in the news, it’s in the media, it seems to be everywhere, I would even wear it on my toes, Channel logo and all, LOL

    Love,

    Mc Huggs :)

  32. Normal Girl says:

Pink tends to look terrible on me, I have these weird yellowish undertones that just clashes with every light pink I’ve ever tried. I saw how great this looked on Temptalia and she has pretty warm skin, so I crossed my fingers and placed the order. I absolutely LOVED it! Amazing – the one pink that looks good on me! I think it’s the yellow base, it makes pink finally wearable for us warm gals! :D It looks gorgeous on you – don’t you just love those gold flecks?

I bought Mimosa too, but I have had a terrible time with that one… doesn’t apply well, never dries, and it looked almost… rubbery? I dunno, I was really frustrated. I almost didn’t order Morning Rose because of it, I’m actually contemplating returning Mimosa! I’ve never returned a polish before, but it’s just… not working. I was so glad that Morning Rose turned out so beautiful, or I might have been turned off Chanel forever!

  33. Kate says:

I just can’t get behind the decals. Reason being – a few years ago when “Speidi” were still on the radar, Heidi was photographed with some hideous acrylic talons with HUGE Chanel decals on every single nail. It just looked so tacky with the combo of the length, the number of decals, and the acrylic-ness of it all… ugh! And to boot, they were on HER nails. (If you can’t tell, I’m not a fan of her/them, lol.)

  34. Cat says:

This is really pretty. Not sure if I’m willing to throw down $25 on it, but… it is very pretty and I don’t have anything like it in my collection. Love the golden shimmer. Crap, I’m talking myself into it.

  35. Susan says:

Oh my gosh, those decals are cracking me up! I LOVE it! I don’t mind understated labels, and considering how much Chanel polish I wear, I think I’m going to need to get these. They would look great over Black Satin, or maybe Dragon as well. Do you just take them off with nail polish remover when you change manicures? Just curious since they’re gold.

  36. Erin says:

Your decal is classy and looks great with this color. Chanel polishes are expensive but you get what you pay for. They never disappoint.

  37. Sharon says:

I love pink polish but now that I’m older, I have a hard time finding one that isn’t too sweet and girly. This pink is a beautiful color that seems grown up to me. It looks really summery, too.

I really love it with your Chanel logo.

  38. AkashaGermaine says:

How does this compare to Nars Orgasm?

  39. stephanie says:

im shocked that i want this so badly because im normally not a fan of the light pinks…too girly for my taste. but i died over the gold flecks in this and the color reminds me of a delicious glass of guava juice in the early morning [shrug...i dunno...it really was the first thing that came to mind for me].

    the decal is cute!

  40. beady says:

How is this one comared to Zoya Cassi?

  41. Olivia says:

Completely agree with you on the Mimosa polish and just buy Morning Rose! This is a GREAT pink and I can’t get enough of the gold flecks in it. The color seems to brighten up my olive skin tone which is a shocker since I haven’t been tanning and its 50 degrees outside!

  42. allison says:

I like it. Although I busted out the Chanel Black Pearl again on Saturday for my feet. I’m still obsessed with the color. Just wish my fingernails weren’t so crappy because the color would last longer!

  43. Thresa says:

Thanks for mentioning Esther’s Nail Center. That really brings quite visitors to our website. Also there’s another ‘Chanails’ that was posted a year ago. CC decals on black nails with matching chanel purse.

  44. Makira says:

    Hi! Greetings from Norway! :)

First time ever that I comment on you blog, but this time I just had to.

Personally I like greens, purple, greys and so on. I do have some bright reds and some pinks, but this alternative lyric of yours was just brilliant. That’s exactly how I would feel if I fell in love with a pink :D

I love the way you discribe things, the wide range of brands, the quality on you photos and your easy catagory stash or share.

    Your blog is great!

  45. Leslie says:

So… being that I’m a fairly cool toned pale gal… do you think I could pull this off? or would I be better to steer towards mistral?

  46. Alexis says:

Very very gorgeous warm toned darker pink. I love, though I don’t know WHEN I’ll be able to get/afford it :( Sometime in my lifetime I hope haha ;). Thanks again for another great post! P.s. I think that gold logo decal looks cute on you, and same I’m not a logo person :).
