ALU’s 365 of Untrieds – Funky Fingers Elephunk

funky fingers elephunk nail polish bottle 365 untrieds 365 of Untrieds is my personal challenge to weed through the polishes in the ALU stash that I’ve been wanting to try but just haven’t gotten around to.

I don’t know when the Five Below stores first opened but it’s only been within the past year that I’ve noticed them popping up all over Northeast Ohio.  Geared towards tweens and teens, the $5 and under retailer is the new dollar store.

While the dollar stores, like Dollar Tree, have been a great source for hard-to-find nail treasures, it seems that Five Below carries brand new product in addition to closeouts.  One brand they carry is Funky Fingers, which is produced by Forsythe Cosmetics, a private labeler and owner of Color Club and Art Club.

I first spotted Funky Fingers a few years back at a hair store in Chicago on my way back from a MUA Nail Board meetup and I picked up a couple of greens but still haven’t worn them.  Today I’m finally taking the plunge Funky Fingers Elephunk.

Formula & Application: Funky Fingers is a 4-Free brand (includes Formaldehyde Resin). The bottle looks like a squashed teardrop with a long, thin smooth plastic cap.  The brush is short, thin and round with somewhat stiff bristles.  This made the application a little tricky as I couldn’t fan out the brush to cover the nail well.

The formula is pretty thin and watery so I ended up needing three coats to achieve full coverage.  The polish doesn’t look super glossy on its own so you definitely need a top coat to help it look its best.

Funky Fingers Elephunk is a medium grey with silver micro-glitter.  The glitter is what truly sets this color apart.  It’s not a subtle shimmer yet it’s not super glitzy.  It’s like a grey version of OPI I Vant To Be A-lone Star with its obvious flecks of silver.  Since Funky Fingers is produced by Forsythe, it’s no surprise that there would be a kissing cousin in the Color Club line.  We’ve seen dead on dupes with the Massini line carried in Meijer stores but in this case we’re not talking identical twins.  Color Club Wild Orchid is very similar only it has red in its base as compared to the cool blue tone in Elephunk.

Bottom Line: I would never kick a grey shimmer out of bed for eating crackers so I certainly won’t be kicking it out of my collection.  Given the uber-affordable price point, even the lack of opacity doesn’t bother me.  It’s a great mid-tone grey but the micro-glitter is stellar.  I suggest you hunt down a Five Below ASAP.

365 of Untrieds Stash/Share Verdict: To borrow a phrase from the over-publicized train wreck Charlie Sheen… Duh, STASHing.  I know, I know, that was BAD.

Funky Fingers nail polishes can be found at Five Below stores in addition to random beauty supply stores.  At Five Below they retail for $2/ea or 3 for $5 for a .5oz bottle.

Have you tried Funky Fingers before?  What do you think of the line?  Have you found them somewhere besides Five Below?  Are you digging Elephunk?

Disclosure: I purchased Elephunk myself.  For more info view my Disclosure Policy.

What is your opinion of the wear time? I tried a Funky Fingers polish a few months back and it peeled right off the next day and am hesitant to try any more.

  11. breeoxd says:

I like these, but the ones in my 5 below smelled so bad I could hardly breathe, and I got a migraine right after opening.. Did i just get a funky batch?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I didn’t notice a strong smell but I may be immune since I spend my days with polish. I hardly notice it anymore while my boyfriend says my office smells like a home perm.

  12. Stephanie says:

There’s a Five Below near the Ulta in Cleveland on the west side. Is that Cleveland? I can never tell. Fairview Park? I dunno. YOU KNOW where I’m talking about. I’m a fan.

There is a Five Below near Easton in Columbus, OH. I have found a few Funky Fingers polishes, full size and minis, there. The also had Sally Hansen Insta-Dry for 3/$5.00 over the weekend.

  19. ChicagoGirl says:

The polishes at Five Below are made for them. I know they have a Katy Perry Line right now, and are coming out with a Justin Bieber line. They are opening stores in Chicago and Detroit in a couple months. I’m SUPER excited!!

  20. Pamela says:

I LOVE this color, but in Cuyahoga Falls we don’t have a store that carries it:-(…can we order this online? I don’t drive to Cleveland.

    • Amy says:

Actually I was just over at the Five Below in Stow where I live, it’s right next to Hobby Lobby. They have tons of this brand PLUS they had a $1 clearance bin by the registers with a bunch of different brands including L.A Colors nail polish. This is probably the closest Five Below to you.

      • Pamela says:

Oh thanks Amy! Stow I can do…LOL. And I know where the Hobby Lobby is, so I can’t get lost,-) I hope I can find this color there.

  21. V says:

I have this one, and also the FF “Jester” which is AMAZING!!! Didn’t know these were made by the same manuf. as Color Club but now I know why their colors are so great!!! Thin but a 3rd coat never hurt anyone.

  22. Melanie says:

I was just at a Five Below, and I picked this up after your post. It is very pretty in person. Thanks…I would probably not have tried it without your endorsement.

  23. Lindsay says:

this one is still in my untrieds…i’m pretty sure it’s gonna get stashed though too. pretty pretty greys!

  24. Tia says:

I love how you reviewed funky fingers! I already have a few from a while ago before I started to really get into better brands of nail polish, but I’m gonna hunt some down!

  25. Bernardette Enochian says:

I bought Funky Fingers Queen Cupcake which is a really pretty pink in the bottle…well…1st coat streaky…2nd coat streaky…3rd coat streaky…Too much work…I am NOT a fan.

  26. Alexis says:

The cute packaging and adorable name is what drew me in first. What I didn’t expect was the silver specks peeking out from what would’ve been another grey. Unique, not loud but noticeable, and a calming wintery feel about this polish sets it apart for me and I deffinetly wouldn’t mind getting this one too, but sadly I don’t have it anywhere near me :(. *Sigh* ah well, maybe I’ll find some other substitute. Thanks again ALU for another great swatch! Have a nice day!
