Fun Vintage Nail Polish Find

Friday night I went out with a couple friends to a local event called the Tremont ArtWalk. Once a month local businesses host art showings from 6-10pm and it’s a great way to support emerging artists along with the unique neighborhood shops.

One of our stops was at a vintage shop where I couldn’t help but peruse the 60s fashion magazines, compacts, atomizers and yes, nail polish. I found, in a random bin, this bottle of “Extra Frosted” nail polish from Clairol and I just had to share.

I didn’t even know Clairol made polish back in the day. Though just seeing the word “frosted” made me cringe. No wonder it always makes me think “grandma polish” because it’s what our grandmothers wore.

I know we’ve talked about old nail polishes in the past but do any of you have a vintage bottle like this?  Not necessarily something you would wear but just hang on to as part of your collection?

HAH! Extra Frosted. I love it! I’d never WEAR it, of course, but I probably would have bought it just to have it! :)

I am disappointed you didnt model it for us?…I have some tragic nailpolishes but have tossed away anything old and fugly

  4. Alix says:

What an outstanding find! Please model it for us!!

  5. I have a little collection of very old China Glazes, think pre-original Wizard of Oz polishes. I haven’t actually used any of them, but they seem to be in usable condition…

I have to laugh, I showed by 13yr old this post and her reply was “that’s the kind of stuff Grandma buys for me.” So true.

  7. Sara says:

That’s awesome! I wonder what year that’s from?

How awesomely retro! I love it! If I would stumble on something like that, I know I would have bought it just for sake of my collection. The word frosted is a little scary, but totally awesome in an old-fashioned sort of way. Who knew Clairol made polish? I love anything retro, thanks for sharing!

  9. Jamie says:

I don’t think I’d wear it. I try to avoid the big 3 chemicals in polishes and back then just think what is in it. It’d be like wearing varnish.
    The bottle is neat though?
I wonder if she bought it?

This is awesome! I’d actually be genuinely interested in seeing what it looks like. It could be nice? Maybe?

  13. robin says:

    I would totally wear that.

  14. Taffy says:

I am so jealous you found that and I would love to see it on your nails just for fun!

What a cool polish! My mom recently uncovered an old baby pink Avon. It was totally dried up but I was actually able to use thinner to liquefy it again :)

  16. melina bee says:

yeah, second Ton, I’d love to see what it looks like on. if only to be glad I live now. I heard though that in the 40s green, blue and dark shades of polish were popular and those don’t sound bad.

Cool Find! I do not have any original nail polosh bottles, but did score an original Cutex nail polish color card. Probably used to display in a drugstore. Best part is that there is a “correction” for one of the polish color names that I do believe is original to the card!

  18. Leslie says:

WOW this brings back memories! My mom had a bottle of that with some extra frosted pepto-bismol pink business in it. (And I don’t mean pretty pepto like RBL!)
I can remember loving the feel of the lid…random, I know.

I don’t know if it falls into the vintage category, but I still have most of my polish from the early 80′s-lots of pink frosts and early glitters. And from ’87-’88 (?), the first matte (Maybelline) I ever saw-boy was it ugly, and turned shiny in three days of wear.

Hi! I so remember the Clairol line of beauty products. They were divided into groups for different hair colors: blonde, red, brunette. As I recall they had cute cream color plastic cases with three lip colors; you chose the set that matched your hair.

Try this: go to Ebay, search for Clairol lip*.

    Enjoy!

Wow! I remember these bottles in my grandmother bathroom and even in my moms stash, when I was little. This pic totally brought back memories :)

“Extra frosted”? There’s a warning if there ever was one :\

  23. Mandy says:

I have a 1990 bottle of peach frosted cream polish that I wore for my wedding. It was lovely back in the day but I wouldn’t be seen dead in it now!

  24. yaya says:

so pretty! That event sounds exciting!

  25. Sandi says:

LOL. My mom had that polish. It was in her nightstand with a bunch of other shudder inducing, solidified relics we toseed when she passed away. Good thing I wasn’t polish addicted then or I’d have had to keep them all. I remember especially one gawdawful Avon that looked like very old, dried blood……….

  26. julie says:

I have a bottle of frosty mauve polish that my grandma used to wear – I painted her nails the last time I saw her before she passed away. My mom wears a similar color – probably an unconscious tribute.

  27. Natalie says:

I actually have two tiny bottles of vintage cuticle oil from the 1920s. They are in the daintiest ruby coloured bottles with art deco styling – extremely cute!

  28. The Tremont Art Walk is always a great place to find keepsakes – I just never considered the possibility of finding an “antique” polish! LOL Did you buy it?

That bottle is very cool looking. I never hang on to old polishes though… it would have to be something VERY distinct.

  29. ruthie23 says:

yes I have a few from the 80′s. I should do a blog post on them for you. Am I the only one who likes this color??? Extra Frosted silvery lilac??? Yes please.

  30. B says:

No ruthie, I adore it! On both lips and nails. Unfortunately the very pale, extra frosty and silvery pinks/lilacs don’t do anything for my skintone. I’ve forced myself to get away from it on the lips, though I still go for a frosty shade-albeit a much darker one. I can’t help myself on the nails and am sporting a frosty pink on my toes as I type this.

I remember when avon nail polishes came in bottles like that, where the handle was long and tapered at the end. I wish I never threw them away, it made polishing nails so much easier than with the short stubby tops of today.
