OPI Katy Perry Collection Preview
OPI also revealed info on their Katy Perry collaboration today. Can I just say that I’m so happy to see OPI finally embracing social media and not pretending a collection doesn’t exist until the day it launches in stores? In this collection, the colors range from a confectionery pink to a bold blue that seemed to be pulled straight from Katy’s California Gurls video.
From left to right: Last Friday Night, Not Like the Movies, The One That Got Away, Teenage Dream and Black Shatter.
It’s obvious that the glitter party is nowhere near over in nail world. After all the Deborah Lippmann and China Glaze Holiday glitters plus the OPI Alice & Burlesque sparklers the train to Glitter Town won’t be reaching the end of the line anytime soon.
What are your thoughts on these? Are they what you would expect from a collection involving Katy Perry? Do you think that OPI including “Shatter” polishes in two collections means that we’re going to get inundated with crackle from the other major polish brands? Will you give into the cracked polish effect?
UPDATE: Thanks to the readers who pointed out that OPI posted a video on YouTube showing the colors and shatter effect

It’s too bad that the focus and lighting in the official OPI video (on Facebook) is too poor to see the swatches properly. I’m loving the multi-colored holo-like glitter in Teenage Dream and I suppose it’s time I climbed aboard the crackle train. I chuckled at how the OPI employee accidentally referred to it as crackle instead of shatter. I crossed Last Friday Night off my wishlist after seeing how sheer it appeared in the video. Not Like the Movies isn’t my style simply because I’m not fond of dark colors but it does look different and mesmerizing. The One That Got Away is b-o-r-i-n-g. OPI reds/pinks/magentas can be interesting (see Burlesque collection) and a simple frost just doesn’t suffice.
You know what I find most interesting about this is that the crackle/shatter adds a unifier to the idea of the “skittle nails”. I could see someone wearing a different color on their nails, applying the crackle over it just like this video, and totally getting away with it. Hmmm…
Ah, now that is an interesting idea! I’m going to have to try that when this shatter comes out!
omg, that would be so cool, with all different neons over it… hmmmm is correct.
That is exactly what I thought watching this video and what I will be doing. I feel a little childish doing different colored nails with no rhyme or reason, but this really ties it in!
So far, these aren’t grabbing me. I think I can skip these, but will have to see the swatches to be sure.
Hi Michelle: First was the Matte look, or was it the glitter now it’s the “shattered” look, I’ll buy into it. It’s like placing a new coating over any polish and changing it’s surface.
Loved the OPI video, (how come it’s considered spam?) Christine, the host of the OPI face book page does a great job on presenting the new colors as well as, the “Shattered,” look. I can just see not just OPI (but possibly every nail polish manufacturer have their own “shattered” or “crackled” or blasted apart,” LOL line of colors.
Nameste.
Mc Huggs
OMG! Two of them look like they have holo glitter! I NEED these!
Hi, when will these be available?
LOVING the shatter, maybe not over glitters though? seems like overkill. anyway, Mc Huggs mentioned the idea of adding different textures to nails, which reminded me of something you posted awhile back.
I can’t remember which company it was offhand, but someone was coming out with a ‘tweed effect’ topcoat. did that already happen?
I had to laugh, I love the shatter effect over the glitters more than the others. Haha!
doesn’t anyone remember the “shatter” trend was done by CoverGirl years ago!?
I think they do- the crackles. That’s probably why OPI named it shatter, trying to differentiate.
To be fair, it does look a bit different, but still, both polishes are just an adaptation of the painting technique, hehe.
I remember! I had this yellow orange crackle coat that came out around halloween. I think that’s why she was so quick to correct herself when she accidentally said “crackle”. I wonder if OPI’s will be better though because the quality of the Cover Girl polish wasn’t very good at all.
when are these out?
It’s Cover Girl crackle nail polish all over again! Hopefully the OPI formula will be better because I remember the bottle I have being a gloppy mess and it didn’t finish as pretty as the pictures. Yes, they will be on my must buy list…LOL!!
I am totally intrigued by the crackle polish. And for some reason Teenage Dream is grabbing my attention, and I am not a glitter polish fan at all. Seeing swatches will definitely confirm weather these two will be coming home with me in the future.
I’m so disappointed! Katy Perry has such a fun unique personal style but aside from the Black Shatter polish I don’t see anything amazing that I just have to have. Another gunmetal and shimmery burgundy? There are millions of polishes out there like that already. I was really hoping she’d come up with something really different!
good point, but katy isnt really the ones creating the polish colours… they’re simply using her name. my mom, someone who works in the fashion industry, told me that all collabarations are just a company using a celebs name… i mean, do you really think that justin beiber picked colours for his collection with niole by OPI?
So excited!
Most excited about Teenage Dream!! I love your Comment for a Cure campaign – thank you!
Ahhhhh…I was hoping the glitters would be less sheer as well! I am defo getting the black ‘shatter’ tho!
at CVS this evening, I saw a cheapy brand polish called Confetti and they have two that look exactly like LFN and teenage Dream
These are great, I love them and Katy Perry so will definitely be buying! But I personally prefer the look of the BarryM instant nail effects (which I own) to this one..
I agree with Nataile, this collection is kind of boring and not something different u would expect from Katy Perry! i wounder if these glitter polishes are like the burlesque glitters? if not, i’ll pass on them
OMG THIS IS AMAZING. NEED IT.
I expected something different…But I’ll wait until I see the real swatches to decide!
Not Like The Movies will be coming home with me. I love LOVE gunmetal/charcoal gray. Teenage Dream looks cute as well, I could see myself picking that one up too. Not sure about any of the others though.
I’m holding judgement until i see your swatches
I’m not Katy’s biggest fan, but she always has fun, beautiful nails. I’m not really sure how much personal input she had; most celebrities aren’t as involved as people think.
Maybe she’ll wear one of her colors when she gets married to Russell Brand.
Really like this set – and now needs an intervention, before I spend a months salary on nail polish
The blue glitter looks just awesome!
Oooh, love the blue, pink and magenta those are all wearable without inviting judgement.
Hey, I’m in Cleveland too, glad I found you! Nice blog.
how great to see they give us more teasers in advance!
Ha! I just found and pitched a Revlon Street Wear polish that looked a whole lot like Not Like the Movies. I love the color, but the Street Wear polish was probably 10 years old!
I am also drawn to Teenage Dream, but I have at least 3 other glitter pinks, so I’d have to see it on my nails.
My type of colors for nails.
Surprisingly, I really like Not Like the Movies, The One That Got Away, and Teenage Dream. I’m not a huge fan of pinks, but I love the depth of The One That Got Away, and the bright sparkle in Teenage Dream. I think the gunmetal is pretty, too.
Crackle effect is interesting, I would be willing to try it for sure.
HOT! I LOVE THIS!!!!
I SOOO WANT IT!!!! THIS IS SOOO ON MY WISH LIST!!!!! XX
when is this nail polish coming out and where do you get it?
its coming out in january. and i usually get opis from ulta, any salon/makeup kinda store, and trade secrets
i like the blue glittery one and of course the shatter effect polish. i think the blue glitter is soooooooo katy.
barry m sell a shatter one which is amazing and under £3, hope that helps!
Hi, i live in Sweden and work at a hairdresser salon and our supplier from OPI visited us today and showed us this collection. Totally awesome, I’m so eager to get it in January!
Have a great day!
i want teenage dream and black shatter
Just letting you know that about 3 or 4 months ago I picked up a shatter effect polish by a drugstore brand (BYS). You could get not only black, but a fuschia, indigo & yellow. Retails for about AU$3.50.
The craze has already begun.
I was kind of hoping that she was going to have a great vintage blue-red
where can I buy those online? thanks in advance
When demonstrating the Black Shatter, it is unfortunate that Krista didn’t paint the Black Shatter over a bottom coat of a contrasting nail polish such as a white or a shocking pink or even a gold or orange color–that is the way that a crackling nail polish looks best–I know, because I am the son of the inventor of crackling nail polish, and I was responsible for it being sold in stores back in 2000 through 2002 by Cover Girl, however Cover Girl used a different formulation than my father’s, which was inferior to his, and had many problems–both in application and in removal. This new Black Shatter–I believe–is his original, problem-free formula. I am currently the owner of that patent, and I agree that the focus and lighting in the official OPI video is not good.
Hi Lou,
I am hugely intrigued by this product. I bought a similar product in asia. The polish does not split off as much in that one when compared to the opi version. I am working on a material science project that requires me to figure out the materials of nail polish. It would be great if you can send me the link to the patent and also design decisions/requiremnt that allowed your father to decide on the material.
I just want to say that my friends are amazed by the look that this lacquer creates!

If OPI comes out with a different color Shatter than plain black, I suggest that users paint it over a cool, contrasting dry bottom coat of nail polish that can be seen in the cracks above–that’s the ay that crackling nail polish was intended to be used.
where Can I order allofem!!!
SO AMAZING.
Already ordered all of them:)
I went to a salon to purchase this nail polish. The shattered one and it only works on Kate Perrys line apparently. The lady working at the salon had tried the nail polish on other OPI colors and it didnt work. Which bummed me out because im not really into glitter. Anyone else heard of this?
I heard the opposite at the salon..that it does work with other polish brands. I will be trying it soon.
Yes, it does work with other nail polish than the katy perry line. Just make sure polish is dry before putting on the shatter and don’t spend too much time with the shatter cuz it clumps and dries quickly. Very cute tho…I love it!
I have two polishes from the Katy Perry Collection- Last Friday Night and The One That Got Away. I have to say that LFN is pretty dissapointing- the glitter is chunky, clumpy and quite see-through so it takes many coats to get an opaque effect. TOGA IMO is quite pretty and shimmering.
[...] shatter polish – mani game changer! oh my goodness, i went out and bought the new OPI shatter polish and it's so cool. i don't know how it works but you apply over any dry nail polish and it gives a [...]
OMG i am so totally buying this thx for the review!!!!!
I was totally hoping for hot pinks and aqua and turquoise colours. These colours kinda suck. I’ll be looking into shatter though.
I love katy perry.. she is genious!!!!!!!!!!
