Katy Perry’s Avant-Garde Lace Nails

When Katy Perry posted “Glove tip lace nails anyone?” on Twitter yesterday along with this pic I knew that Celebrity Manicurist Kimmie Kyees had to be involved and I was right.  We’ve seen lace used to cover the entire nail before but this is something new. Kimmie shared that these nails were created for a photo shoot but she couldn’t reveal which one so be on the lookout as Kimmie is hoping they make the cover!

Get The Look: “She wanted beige so I used nail tips from Broadway Nails and polished them in China Glaze polishes; Modern Elegance topped Nude. What an amazing shade that combination created.”

“I took out my lace and noticed the V shape. I decided to cut along the V’s and place it in the polish from the cuticles towards the free edge. Leaving the lace on the end came to me after I placed it. I tried the tips on myself and loved the effect. When I showed [the people from the magazine] what they looked like on, they were relived and impressed! Luckily Katy and the rest of the glam squad agreed it looked fantastic. Katy said she loved them!”

China Glaze Modern Elegance is a discontinued color from the Urban Chic/Platinum series but I did find it on eBay and Victoria Nail SupplyChina Glaze Nude also looks to be dc’d but it’s available on eBay and VNS as well.

What do you think of this look on Katy?  I’m thinking it could be something fun to try for a Halloween costume, like a gothic bride or something.  Would you wear this nails and for what occasion?  Have you tried incorporating lace into your nail style?

  1. goooorgeous! so you just stick the lace directly onto wet nail polish?

  2. dawn says:

At first look they are ugly. I like my Bad Fairy by MAC much much better.

  3. Khabeer says:

I really like the way those looks, very unique.

  4. Amanda says:

Umm how do u wash your hands wearing those?they look cool but are not very practical

    • All Lacquered Up says:

It’s definitely a special occasion look, not something to be worn for a long period of time. But if you made them on fake nails and used those press-on adhesive tabs from Sally Beauty, you could reuse them and wear them for Halloween or something.

    • Chynna says:

Ha! I’m glad I wasn’t the only person who wondered about that. Also, crap, I’m so turning into my mom. :o(

  5. Kelley says:

I think these are pretty cool, will have to keep an eye out for them. I’m thinking of all kinds of color combos that would be fun for special events.

  6. Chynna says:

It would be awesome for a gothic bride, vampire, etc. I think I would only be able to wear these for a brief occasion where I really didn’t need my hands to function, even to eat. The idea of these coming at my face to take a bite of food kind of bothers me. Definitely a “tiny purse” event, as there’s no way these would survive fishing around in a large purse or pocket looking for eyes, lipstick, etc. And forget drinking much because good luck washing your hands if you’re even thinking of using the restroom. The loose lace will fray like mad.

I think they’re really ideal for a photo shoot, but not much else. Pose and look pretty, but don’t touch much. They’re gorgeous, but definitely not practical or functional.

  7. Mark says:

so beautiful!! it’s a pity i couldn’t wear it for casual occasions.. :/

  8. Mary says:

Reminds me of bird heads! Haha, yeah, not very practical. Imagine trying to wash your hands with those on? :P

  9. Tuxie says:

This is really cool. I don’t even know what else to say! lol.

  10. melina bee says:

I find them very striking but wouldn’t wear nails like these myself, even for a special occasion. I would find the lace against my fingers to be too distracting and also my hands are very petite and this look would overwhelm them I think.
However, I do think they look just great, very Morticia Adams and dramatic.

  11. MissKrimson says:

different for sure….not my style however
    Maricela

  12. They look fab! Very original although personally only something I would choose if I was dressing up for fancy dress :)

  13. Rebecca says:

well it could be made more practical and wearable by cutting off the bottom part that goes off the nails and putting some top coat on it to make it waterproof! but i’m sure it won’t have the same dramatic effect :)

  14. Lisa says:

    Awesome nails ! :)

  15. Nicole says:

I love that everyone is talking about them not being “everyday” nails..I agree, even at the risk of sounding like my mom, like Chynna said!

  16. Kristina, lover of polish says:

Hi. Maybe these would work for someone like Katy Petty who is trying to be different and is an entertainer…for me? not even for Halloween would I wear this. I don’t find this attractive at all…it’s in fact a little scary. It’s very Elvira Mistress of Darkness..give me a great regular RBL or Chanel mani anyday! But, to each his own!

  17. Donna J says:

These are adorable, like little dresses for your fingers. I do like the look and think it would be great for a special occasion, but of course agree with everyone else that they aren’t practical. So much of fashion isn’t though, and is just meant to be fun and creative for a special occasion.

This did make me think of Tracy Reese’s lace overlays, those are a bit more practical and wearable.

  18. leanne says:

no likey. I love lace covered nails but this is just a step too far.

  19. Zara says:

This looks awesome! I might wear these as part of a costume, but I think they might be too much for me.

  20. Melanie says:

By far the tackiest, trashiest thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe how many people think this looks good.

  21. Alison says:

The kind of remind me of peacock heads, with the “v” of the lace resembling the beak. I think I’d like them more if I had some context; it’s weird seeing a disembodied claw. I might also prefer the nails red or purple.

  22. Nopers says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who think they are ugly! They look like the end result of a cheap craft project :(

  23. Jessi says:

Just to let your know, I saw this seller on Amazon using a few of your pics. They even labeled it with their own website at the bottom.

  24. M says:

    I think they’re bold and gorgeous ;-)

  25. Hannah says:

I personally think they’re hideous. :( Inventive, though!

  26. Helen says:

I’m sorry but this just looks silly and contrived to me.

  27. I think Katy is really creative with her nails! It is great b/c it adds a lot of personality to her as an artist! The lace is cool…kinda Halloween-ish! Looking forward to the next blog posts…..

  28. Kitty says:

Maybe for Halloween like you said, some gothic bride or something. I’m just trying to polish my nails nicely with plain ‘ol polish right now.

  29. It’s proper for a photoshoot, but to use it “normally”, nahhhhh, don’t like it at all.

  30. Leann says:

Looks kind of weird, but cool at the same time. Would definitely be awesome for costume party or something very glam.

  31. Jen says:

I don’t like them at all. Not a bit. Why not do a lacy Konad? That lace pattern looks like silly faces if you take a good look at it.

  32. Jimmy K. Designs says:

Can’t wait for you to talk about her line with OPI

  33. Carolyn says:

Wellllll… this is different for sure!

  34. Janine B. says:

Very pretty until you have to wash your hands! Remind me not to shake hands with Katy Perry.

  35. blue says:

sorry, I have a question about the quote…

    “…Modern Elegance topped Nude…”

does she mean Modern Elegance topped BY Nude; OR,
Nude with Modern Elegance ON TOP (as in Modern Elegance TOPPED the Nude)???

This might be splitting hairs but I bought both colours off of eBay and would like to achieve the look, minus the lace of course :)

  36. blue says:

Oh, also…why are the bottles different?

On some bottles they look like this…

    http://www.luuux.com/health-beauty/china-glaze-modern-elegance

    says: Nail Lacquer
    WITH HARDENERS
    18.5mL e/.65 Fl.Oz
^^^^^^^ This is the one that I have bought off eBay

AND, the other one looks like this…

    http://tonynail.com/products.php?product=China-Glaze-Discontinue-%252d-Modern-Elegance#

(You need to click to enlarge the photo)

    says: Nail Lacquer
    WITH HARDENERS
    Vernis a Ongles
    18.5mL e/.65 Fl.Oz

Is one just an older bottle. I would see the need to fake this brand as it’s already fake, I only paid 20 in total for both.

  37. blue says:

SORRY, I meant to say I wouldn’t see the need to fake this brand as it is already cheap, cheap…lol. Is what I meant to say.
