And The Collaborations Continue – OPI with Serena Williams & Katy Perry

OPI-KATY-PERRY-SERENA-WILLIAMS-NAIL-POLISH OPI has moved beyond Hollywood and onto the Celebrity scene with their color collaborations.  In 2011 we will see polish colors created with both tennis star Serena Williams and rock star Katy Perry.

Teen Vogue Editor Eva Chen broke the story on Twitter after meeting with OPI’s Suzi Weiss-Fischmann and I’ve confirmed the news with OPI.  See, this is why I LOVE Twitter.

According to Eva & OPI…

The OPI Grand Slam Collection with Serena Williams colors will release in sets of two throughout the year, timed with her tennis tournaments. The first set will launch in January 2011 (Australian Open) with a shade called Simply Smashing, a bright green! The other three duos will come out in May 2011 (French Open), June 2011 (Wimbledon) and August 2011 (US Open) .

You may have heard that Serena went to school this year to become a nail tech.  As a salon mani/pedi regular Serena decided to become educated to do something she loves so much.  Partnering with a nail polish brand seems like a natural progression for the tennis champ.

The OPI collaboration with Katy Perry sounds to be just as wild as her nail style.  We’ve all seen her rock some funky nails so hearing that the “star product” in her lineup will be a crackle type nail polish called Black Shatter makes sense.  I wonder if the other colors will be brights to pop between the cracks.

I was wondering how long it would be before a major brand resurrects crackle and here we have it.  What’s funny is that a brand I saw at NY Fashion Week read my post on crackle polish and asked me if they should consider putting one out.  Could crackle be the new matte?

So what do you think of OPI leaping into the world of Celebrity? Do Katy and Serena seem like logical choices? Who would you suggest they partner with? What colors do you hope to see in the collections? Is anyone else surprised that Katy made a deal with OPI and not Minx?

I’m excited to see the collaboration with Katy. I always love her nails!

  2. Andreita says:

It’s ok looking forward for the Serena polishes : D but when I read Katy Perry I expected glitters and super bright colors still want to see it though : D

  3. Amy says:

Excited for both of these! Both of these ladies have bold, original fashion sense — so I’ll be expecting bold, original colors (my favorite). Don’t need another berry creme in the world. . .

Also, let me just say how much I admire Serena Williams for doing the nail tech school thing. It’s pretty clear that girl doesn’t have to work, ever, if she doesn’t want to, and I think it’s cool that she’s not only choosing to engage a trade, but also one that is traditionally looked down on. GO Serena!

    • Ana says:

I never thought of it that way! You’re right! Go Serena!

    • Catherine says:

So it’s ok to pursue a nail tech license if one is wealthy, but it’s not cool to be a nail tech if one is from a war-torn country (generalizing here) and doing nails might be one of very few options available to earn a living?

What you wrote does not make sense to me. Serena worked very hard to get to where she is, and of course she can do anything she wants with her time. I think it’s cool that Serena is pursuing something she is passionate about, but your statement sounds very classist to me.

Circumstances dictate life choices, and I do not consider myself above any job, nor do I look down on others who have no choice but to compromise their health by doing nails.

      • Catherine says:

I would also like to add that although I have an education from a competitive university, I have put serious thought into earning a nail tech license myself. There are plenty of people that are in this line of work not because of necessity but because they love color, are gregarious people who enjoy conversing with lots of different people, and really like helping people look and feel their best.

        • Chris says:

I don’t think Amy was trying to be offensive or classist. I think she was saying that Serena is not in a position where she has to enter into a trade because she needs the money, but decided to become a nail tech because it was something SHE wants to do. I think that was what Amy was trying to say.

          • All Lacquered Up says:

I agree. I don’t think Amy meant anything negative. I’ve met manicurists who have said that their profession is looked down upon. Even at Fashion Week they are always found crawling on the floor, under tables, etc. because the makeup artists and hair stylists come first. When I met Zoya, the brand’s creator, she told me how she’d hear women say, “the girl who does my nails,” rather than use the term manicurist or nail tech. I “think” what Amy meant is that in spite of her money and fame, she applauds Serena for choosing to study a profession that doesn’t necessarily get the spotlight or recognition it deserves. Serena certainly doesn’t *need* to become a manicurist or go to school for anything. She could give it all up right now and live the easy life if she wanted to.

      • Amy says:

I think other people have clarified what I meant, but I thought I’d jump back in and say that I didn’t mean to denigrate nail techs at all. I respect them highly! I just meant to say that many people DO look down on them, and that I respect Serena for doing what she loves regardless of what anybody might say. I also respect her for wanting to work for a living even though she doesn’t have to.

Of course, it would be better if nail techs got the respect they deserve from everyone. But it is nice to see them being respected by a high-profile athlete like Serena Williams.

And I just commented yesterday on Scrangie’s post about Justin Bieber and Nicole By OPI that if anyone deserved a nail polish collection, it was Katy Perry! I’m not a fan of her music, but damn if I’m not excited about this nail polish collection. Black Shatter sounds awesome, and I hope OPI can improve on the crackle polish I remember…it was a little iffy to work with. And there had better be slightly scandalous, campy names to go with the colors! The names OPI have been coming out with lately…meh. I hope they really embrace Katy’s personality and run with it. Like the old Urban Decay names, Trailer Trash, etc.

    • Jessi says:

Haha, I read your comment yesterday on Scrangie’s blog and when I saw this post about the Katy Perry collaboration I immediately thought of it. Good call!

  5. Grace says:

I think that if a company could make a crackle polish that was a little less… temperamental than the ones we’ve seen in the past, it could definitely take off. People were initially put off by application issues with matte polish, but I feel like OPI really got it right with their suedes – a little longer on the dry time to ease application, a little shimmer to spice it up. If anybody can make this crackle thing happen, its OPI.

  6. I’m REALLY excited for the Katy Perry collection! She’s been known for all of her amazing/whacky nails and I expect some awesome things from her! I’m really excited about the crackle, too… I hope she has more up her sleeve!

I’m more excited about Serena Williams than I thought I’d be. I think it’ll be interesting and I hope she has some great, vibrant colors.

  7. Miss Merx says:

Well, don’t know if you know already but Barry M here in the UK has just released their black crackle polish called ‘Nail Effects’ (maybe this week?) and its pretty much sold out everywhere! Think you can get it on the Barry M website though…

Anyhoo, we’re all loving it over here! I also saw another brand that has done crackle in different colours, but can’t remember who it was? I love a bit of crackle, me.

  8. kelliegonzo says:

i hope it’s the crackle polish like the old cover girls and bys, not the new “grafitti” type that is just straight cracks. i kinda hate those. and even tho i detest katy perry, i’m interested to see what they come up with. serena’s take on the whole thing is cool :)

  9. Kelly says:

I am really looking forward to the Katy Perry one. I love bright colors and I have a feeling (because of her style and what not) that the colors that are going to be released are going to AMAZING AND BRIGHTTTTTT. I am so excited :)
I also can’t wait for that one crackle polish. I have never owned one before :) The Serena William one looks pretty good too :)

  10. Caz says:

So excited for the Katy Perry collaboration, can’t wait to see what they release :)
    xxx

  11. bb says:

Looking forward to wearing Serena’s polishes to her matches when she comes back to us here in the States!

Just hoping the second polish in each duo will be a little more temperate than the bright greens and oranges of the AO … unlike Serena, some of us still have to go to an office to work! :-)

  12. Arrianne says:

I’m excited for these! :D But please, don’t call that woman a rock star.

  13. Bpdd says:

I’m mostly excited for the crackle. I have missed crackle ever since the old days and if they release a black crackle I will no doubt wear it every single day for at least a month. I miss the crackle effect and sure hope it’s coming back.

  14. Princessflttrby says:

Sounds like I need to start budgeting big bucks for 2011 Polish LOL

  15. Isabella says:

Here in Sweden you can buy crackle polish by Isadora, it’s called the grafiti-collection with matching bright colors. Som blogers rave over it, but i’m not sure it will be a trend that spreads like matte polish did.

  16. LadyMorrgian says:

Thank heavens, I have been searching and searching for a crackle.

  17. mochamishmash says:

I’ve just started adjusting to the matte polishes, so I’m not that keen on a crackle effect polish…I’m soo looking forward to the Serena and Katy collabos though. They both have bold and colorful styles so I’ll be fun to see what OPI comes up with. Can’t wait!!

  18. Susie says:

I saw Serena on Oprah a couple of weeks ago and she told her about her polish line with OPI. And the lucky audience got the whole fall line.

  19. Lisa says:

That sounds interesting, looking forward to see Katy Perry’s nailpolishes :D

  20. stregalice says:

In Europe lots of brands are coming up with crackle polish (IsaDora, Barry M, Pupa, etc.), they are low-end brands though and I’m little disappointed in OPI for following this trend.

    • Jenn says:

whats wrong with them doing a crackle? i think its a great iea, and if you dont wnt it, then you dont need to buy it….

  21. M says:

Being a Tennis fan I can’t wait to see the Serena Williams Collections!!! I bet they would bold and bright as she is always very daring with her nail style ;-)

  22. Virginia says:

OMG! I was thinking this morning that Katy Perry should collaborate with OPI and I thought about emailing OPI to mention it! Must be ESP kicking in. I can’t wait!

  23. Erin says:

I don’t like Katy Perry, but if her lineup includes a crackle polish, count me in. I have been dying for one of these ever since my old Covergirl one dried up!

  24. Katrina says:

Team Serena here! I just put on “Tree Hugger” by China Glaza and I’m surprised at how much I like it. I’ll be first in line for her colors.

  25. Donna J says:

Serena has her own fashion line, Aneres (her name backwards), I wonder if the polish is meant to go with her collection?

  26. Anna says:

Im really excited about the Katy part :)
    I love Katy.. :)

  27. Natalie says:

I am fully prepared to go crazy over the Katy collab. She has such a cute funky style – I’m really excited to see what the polishes look like!

  28. Hilda says:

We’ve actually had crackle for awhile here in Sweden… Probably not by a big international brand like OPI, but by a make up/nailpolish brand called Isadora… pretty and cool polishes though :D

  29. Jackie S. says:

I understand what Amy meant, no harm done :)

I am so excited, I know bot these lades will deliver the good! Awesome!

Just please no reds or pinks :)

  30. MissMoses says:

I think anything goes with celeb endorsements these days. I mean Justin Bieber is coming out with a line. I just wonder how much input these celebrities will have on the shades. Imagine Justin Bieber at a meeting at OPI deciding on shades… O_o

    • Jenn says:

lol that would be so freaking funny!!!! im not buying his colours, i think im the only 14 year old girl in the world who doesnt love jusin beiber.

  31. Ollie says:

    So excited about Katy :D

If there’s a shade called ‘California Gurls’, I think I might die in excitement…

  32. Abby says:

I’m thinking the black crackle over something from this year’s Burlesque collection. I wonder if it will work on glitters?

  33. Victoria says:

i would totally get the crackle for sure! that is soo effin awesome right there!! i always want innovative ways to easily create nail styles. god im so lazy ;D i also want some more matte shades as i only own one…

  34. MissB says:

Yes! Two women who are genuinely interested in nail art and have long demonstrated it. I want to see their collections not because of their celebrity status, but because of their creativity and enthusiasm.

  35. Barron says:

Im super excited for the crackle. It’s going to add a whole new dimension to nail polish now that’s it’s going mainstream
