Chanel Spring 2011 Preview – Black Pearl

Thanks to the talented UK Manicurist Sophy Robson we have an up close and personal peek at what could be the next big Chanel nail color; Black Pearl.

This shot posted by French Vogue lets us in on the name of the polish but it’s Sophy’s TwitPic of one of the models that answers the bigger story.  What is this color?

Based on this photo I’m seeing some green, oil spill tendencies in the color. Could this be a twist on Chanel Vert Sacrilege?

These images from Vogue UK shed some more light on the story. To me the color appears to have some gray-green leanings or a duo-chrome effect that would make sense of the “pearl” in its name.  Regardless there’s definitely some green in this color.  There has to be, right?

For more behind the scenes nail scoop, you should check Sophy’s Blog. The blue vein nails she created for Vivienne Westwood are haunting.  Something to think about for Halloween.

So what do we think of this inky hue for Spring?  Nail colors are basically seasonless anymore but are you a fan of wearing dark colors in Spring?  Is it refreshing against the pale pastels & traditional brights or too gloomy for you?  Do you think Chanel hit the mark with Black Pearl or does it fall short of your expectations?

  1. Jackie S. says:

I agree, there is some definite green in there, its very intriguing!!

  2. I don’t think it’s a twist, I think it’s an opalescent Black, like a Tahitian Pearl…at least I’m hoping!!!

  3. I love Sophy Robson! She rocks!!!

I’m not sure about this, although I do love the colour but I’m not sure if this is an appropriate colour for spring as we were dull, gloomy and dark colours throughout AW. Spring, I couldn’t wait for that burst of colours!!

  4. greenCerulean says:

I don’t know if its just the pictures or what but the polish looks at times streaky and clumpy.

Color is interesting though. I like the idea of a black pearl polish.

    • Bunny says:

I don’t think it’s streaky or clumpy, but in one picture (with the chain mail) it does look as if it was smeared and scraped when the model was putting on the garment.

  5. Rebecca says:

Hmmm….I’m not sold. I agree that the color looks streaky a bit. And the color is SO different, depending on the light!

  6. Jaime says:

Looks like my Sally Hanson Xtreme Wear Gunmetal color. That has a tinge of blue not green but the first pic looks VERY similar.

  7. sara says:

I liked MAC’s Blue India last spring and that was pretty dark for the spring. So that isn’t an issue for me. It is a really cool looking color. It makes me wish Chanel polishes didn’t cost so much and weren’t so hard to come by!

  8. Jen says:

It looks like a grey to me, with a teal shimmer in it similar to how Paradoxal was brownish with purpley shimmer.

  9. Gilded Nails says:

Thankfully for my credit card, this colour is not doing it for me! I know colours are seasonless now but I still would have preferred a softer colour for spring…

Thanks for providing the scoop though! :D

  10. *pumps fist*
It looks like I’m gonna be Chanel-lemming free for another season.

Personally, I think dark colors are good for any season. I do wear them less in the spring and summer, because with all the sunlight, I prefer the glitters, jellies, and holos.
But there’s never a wrong time to wear a gorgeous vampy shade, imo.

  11. NailPolishFan says:

I like the nail color. I would wear a dark nail color in the Spring. I sometimes wear light colors in the Fall.As for hittig the mark I would say yes, but it looks like a polish that is going to need a few coats. Other then that I like it.How does it compare to China Glaze’s Black Diamond?

  12. Bunny says:

It reminds me of Dior’s Gris Perle — a dark gray silver — which was also released the same spring as Particuli

  13. Jadis4742 says:

I’m not sure what to think…the last Chanel polish I got was Steel, and I was a little let down by it. I just don’t think Chanel can pull off an almost-black polish every other season.

  14. Tiku says:

The 5th picture of the nail polish looks promising, but i was hoping for a pale blue. I hope more details emerge soon!

  15. Cocoa Mama says:

I like it! Black/dark nail polish will always be chic during any season but this is like a fresh spin on wearing a dark color…so you still get that dark color affect but it’s in fact different.

  16. Laura says:

Looks like mold from those pictures. Do not want

  17. victoria says:

ohhhh. We can definitely see this as a dark and gorgeous twist to Spring’s typical pale shades!!! Thanks for sharing!

  18. Stacey says:

Not impressed. Chanel had a hit in ’94 with Vamp. Since then, I have not seen anything so intriguing. Although I bought blue satin when it came out, but when it comes to nail color, Chanel is not ahead of the curve. And as far as wearing dark in the Spring, I say whatever you’re in the mood for, wear it.

  19. This color looks awesome! I like that we can’t even really tell what it will actually look like, but from these pictures it looks like an edgy interesting, polish color that us nail polish freaks will love.

  20. Liz says:

Have had Shelac nails four time now but today the Manicurist said I needed a rest as my nail and nail beds were so dry. Has anyone experienced a similar problem, if so, what’s the solution? Could do with more colours in the range and sometimes the polish looks very gloopy, but on the whole a great product. Hope this nail dryness is only temporary otherwise it’s back to the drawing board!!!

    • JP says:

I have been reading that you are supposed to be applying cuticle oil 2 x’s a day. It will penetrate through the polish and help moisturize the nail bed. Did your manicurist tell you to do this? Go to CND’s website and read the posts, there is a lot of good info.

  21. Nicole says:

Boo. I expected more from Chanel… The grey/green hue is hot for rainy days in Spring…but Chanel is usually the innovator of new polish colors. Come up with some kind of crazy pink/vibrant purple/bold blue for Spring…not a boring oil slick color.

  22. AmyS says:

I love this color but I’m not so sure I love the streaks. I think this will be one of those that will be duped to death. I’m going to have to see more swatches of this one as I’m very hesitant these days to plunk 25 on a bottle of nailpolish.

  23. Alllison says:

looks grey to me and i’m a huge grey fan. although, it may pick up hints of teal too, which could be cool

  24. Susana says:

Green undertones look terrible on my skin (all my grey polishes lean to blue), so I think I’ll pass on this one.
I’ll wait until I see swatches, maybe it will look different.

  25. Karin says:

I like it! It looks very cool and i hate all those pastel colours anyway :p

  26. LadyMorrgian says:

This could be interesting, but from first look this looks mainly blah to me. Also in the photos it appears to be clumpy and streaky. I will wait though till I swatch this myself, or at least wait till you do before making any opinions.

  27. hellcandy says:

oooo like the look of that! But whoever painted those nails…gah should have got you to do it. Your manis are much better :)

  28. G says:

It looks a lot like Noir Ceramic to me.

  29. Elle says:

    I agree! – It looks streaky…
I would wear a dark color in spring and summer but I just don

  30. switch says:

The outdoor pic isn’t doing it for me… However, the runway pics make it seem pretty cool. If it’s unique I’ll get it for sure, but if it’s anything like Steel (which isn’t really unique for me at all) I’ll have to pass. I wonder if this will be released together with the powder blue polish we saw a while back? I hope we get more updates on this soon!

  31. MacKenzie says:

I don’t know…I was a little disappointed with Steel and Strong – I’m afraid of getting caught up in hype these days…

  32. Penny says:

    d*mn you, Chanel. Must have.

  33. Alison says:

Chanel Jade craze 2.0? It looks beautiful.

  34. GwenSA says:

It does look like is has green and blue in it when shown with those colors in its background. I’d like to see it without color-coordinated background colors to get a better idea of what it looks like.

I wear dark colors in any season. LOL @ ‘looks like mold’ — it kind of looks like the veins in bleu or roguefort cheese.

  35. Sandy says:

The color makes sense. Most black pearls of a high quality have a green sheen to them – making them better quality. I love pearls so I can’t wait to see this nail shade. Thanks for the heads up! I’m also looking forward to better swatches!

  36. Sapphy says:

Love it! I cannot wait, I love black pearls. I wonder what the whitish polish behind it is, maybe a sheer like Illusion d’or? (or however it’s spelled..fail).

As to the application, I’m sure it was styled intentionally to be kinda smudged and less polished-looking. They obviously don’t have topcoats, they’re too dull-looking for it.

  37. Erika says:

not a fan at all and I LOVE vampy colors. I never wear dark in the spring summer because where I come from it’s winter 9 months of the year so I like to celebrate with bright colors when summer finally does arrive!

  38. Jackie says:

But I want it NOW! I should like Veruca Salt..lol:)

  39. Jackie says:

    I sound like Veruca Salt..lol

  40. Zara says:

This looks really nice – I wonder what collection it will be released with. It doesn’t seem to fit in Cruise, but you never know.

  41. Leann says:

I am kind of disappointed in Chanel. The last few shades have been kind of boring.

  42. Kristina, lover of polish says:

Another Chanel green polish on the horizon could make me very very happy! I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

  43. Maria says:

Hehe, I’m wearing Chanel Black Satin through the Autumn, so that’s definatel a lighter shade in contrast. ;) WHo am I kidding, I wore black last Spring too. The Summer went with taupes though. I sorta dislike bright colors, I’m always on the smoky-vampy-gloomy-dark-bandwagon!

  44. T says:

It looks great, I def have to get that. I LOVE the green Chanels.

  45. jill says:

It looks like a grey-er version of Borghese Stellare Notte, I like it!

  46. Natalie Callihan says:

Well…At first I was really excited to see that Channel was coming out with a new black pearl nail polish. They had a pearly black back in ’06 I think it was that like sold out everywhere. I don’t think it is quite as nice (from the pictures)…however I will be purchasing it..I’ll give it a shot!

  47. Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that you were right, Black Pearl does have some green in it.
It’s a green shimmer actually, not a duochrome but it’s really georgeous.
My boyfriend surprised me with Black Pearl and Pearl Drop for my birthday sunday (I don’t know who he had to bride for that but he sure knows me well) so I decided to start my own blog and I posted a review on them.
I thought maybe you’d like to see them.
    xoxo.

  48. Air Max says:

Love it! I cannot wait, I love black pearls. I wonder what the whitish polish behind it is, maybe a sheer like Illusion d

  49. Air Max says:

    i liked them very much
