OPI Shrek Forever After Collection Swatches, Review and Comparisons
You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a superfly, but I bet you ain’t never seen a donkey fly.
Fanatics, can you please join me in a standing ovation for OPI and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann for creating a collection with NO REDS OR PINKS!! It took a big, smelly ogre to make this magical moment happen but I’m not complaining. The Shrek Forever After Collection is OPIs addition to their ongoing Summer Brights series and I’m totally into it. Surely, OPI could have found a reason to include a red or pink in this collection but I applaud them for not playing it safe. A swampy, ogre green isn’t exactly conservative and I love that. In fact, looking at the colors it’s like they were designed to be mani/pedi combinations. The lilac & purple, sky & cyan blue and yellow & green. They’re just meant to be together. |
Formula and application -All these polishes applied extremely smooth and creamy, even the yellow (rare, I KNOW!). As I’ve come to expect from OPI the formula levels well and flows like butter. The only downside is the pigmentation. I ended up using three coats for each color as they just weren’t that pigmented but I’d take three smooth layers over two chunky coats any day of the week.
Funky Dunkey is a true grape purple. It’s rich and not too dark, making it the perfect purple for summer. Though I’m not entirely sure how purple relates to Donkey. I would have imagined a purple tinged gray for him though that’s not very summery or bright.

When I first wore Funky Dunkey, I thought it was a dead-on dupe for China Glaze Grape Pop but upon further inspection, Grape Pop is more blue. What FD is close to is my color, Rescue Beauty Lounge Mismas. Think of FD as Mismas’ slightly brighter sister.

Rumple’s Wiggin’ is a soft lilac purple and normally it would turn me off completely but there’s just enough pigment to keep it from becoming a washed out pastel.

This comparison shot isn’t my best work so you’ll just have to take my word that Rumple’s Muggin’ is darker than China Glaze Light As Air. It’s not a huge difference but definitely noticeable. I was going to show RM next to the lavendar from the Hong Kong collection but that color is way to pink to be a match so I’m showing it next to last year’s Done Out In Deco from the South Beach collection.

Ogre-The-Top Blue is a very deceptive blue. I really didn’t expect it to dry this dark based on the bottle shade. It’s a deep cyan blue. For some reason it reminds me of a swimming pool liner. Random, I know. Oh and be careful when removing Ogre or it will give you smurf fingers.

Since I don’t own anything similar to Ogre-The-Top Blue, I’m comparing it to Barry M Cobalt Blue which is more of a true blue and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Brisk Blue which has more turquoise to its base color.

What’s With The Cattitude? is a pretty true sky blue creme. Like Rumple’s Wiggin’ it’s got enough depth of color to escape pastel territory. I think a pedicure with Ogre-The-Top Blue and a mani with this would be gorg for summer. Also, can’t you picture this as a bride’s “something blue” pedicure?

The closest thing I have to a dupe is China Glaze Bahamian Escape from the Bahama Blues collection. The main difference is that BE is much brighter.

Who The Shrek Are You? takes lime green to a whole new level. We’re talking under-ripe lime here. It’s a total match to Shrek’s body. Now as much as I love a green, this is not my style. I’ve never really gotten into the yellow-greens and this one is fugly in a fabulously funky way. Would I wear this? Probably not but I appreciate the uniqueness of it.

I almost forgot that I own another yellow-green, Misa Green With Envy. I don’t even remember ordering from Head2Toe. It was buried in the back of my light green drawer. I pulled it out and was all, “Ah-ha! Dupe!” Well, close but not cigar. Green With Envy is more yellow but close enough. I’ll probably ditch the Misa and keep the OPI. I also showed this next to Sally Hansen Lickety Split Lime.

Fiercely Fiona is lemon yellow with a slightly green cast. It’s yellow funkified. Now most yellows are application problem city and while this one wasn’t as dreamy as the rest of the collection it’s certainly better than most.

Again, no exact dupe for Fiercely Fiona. It falls somewhere between OPI Banana Bandanna and Fingerpaints Bikini Yellow.

Bottom Line: If you like funky colors, you won’t regret picking up Who The Shrek Are You? and fans of purples won’t be disappointed in Funky Dunkey. In all honesty, while all the colors may be dupeable, I can’t imagine anyone regretting picking up any of these. I know that’s a bold statement but I was very pleased with this collection.
The OPI Shrek Forever After Collection launches in May 2010 though I suspect it will on sale before that. OPI polishes are carried at salons nationwide including chains like ULTA, Regis, Beauty First, Trade Secret and JC Penney.
So now that you’ve seen the Shrek colors, what do you think? Any must-haves? Are you loving/hating the ugly beautiful nature of Who The Shrek Are You?
Disclosure: Product samples were furnished to me by OPI. For more info, view my Disclosure Policy.

You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a superfly, but I bet you ain’t never seen a donkey fly.

I’m a bit depressed. All the ones I loved are ones I realize I have close dupes for.
I’m sooo totally happy with this collex. Even if I wouldn’t wear that lime green as a mani, I want it on my toes. The rest of the colors are screaming my name!
Thank you for these awesome swatches!!! Just in time for payday today!
I love the Funky Dunkey & What’s with the Cattitude? colors! I may have to also try Ogre the Top Blue if ULTA does their buy 2 get one free thing
Also I just have to say I only recently started reading your blog but I freakin love it!#! I especially appreciate your color comparisons because I swear whenever I’m at the store buying new colors I’m always looking at bottles thinking “but isn’t this like that other one I have…..” and this totally helps! You rock
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found me. Make sure you check out the gallery. It’s great for seeing colors side-by-side.
loving Cattitude!
I totally love the idea of this collection, so much fun! I love Rumples Wiggin and Whats With The Cattitude, not sure about the green though!
what’s with the cattitude is a lovely color =)
this is probably the first time i’ve wanted an entire collection from OPI! i’ll definitely buy them all once they’re up on e-tailers. i’m a big fan of odd colors, so i love WTSAY?.
Loveeee OPI. Loveeeee these colors. OPI should thank YOU for this sale… Cause I’m on my way to pick these up cause of you.
thanks.
I’m really drawn to Rumple’s Wiggin
I think it’s a great collection from OPI, nice to see them stay away from the reds
Great post, and I love all the comparison colors, very helpful! I love the fact that OPI has stepped out of the box and done away with reds and pinks in this collection, BRAVO! I will definitely be getting “What’s With The Cattitude?” and “Ogre-The-Top Blue”
I’m so happy you swatched these! I knew I wanted Shrek and Cattitude, now I think I might need them all! So funky and fun!
My feelings about this collection is very Swiss. I am very neutral. Very, very neutral.
I just don’t know. Perhaps I’ll remain with ambiguity until I see how these shades look on my tips.
Although I love a great creme, I am shocked they are all creme. OPI has been creating tonnes of cremes lately. Or is it just me?
I think you are the first to have swatches of this collection!
Yeah, they seem to be having a big old creme finish party this year. Which is a shame because they do some amazing glitters and shimmers. I’d love to see more polishes like the glitters in the Alice In Wonderland collection.
is The Shrek Collection’s whats with the cattitude similar to China Glaze for audrey?
For Audrey is a pretty true turquoise or Tiffany Blue. What’s With The Cattitude doesn’t have any greenish tendencies.
also is Ogre-The-Top Blue any similar to o.p.i dating a royal and suzi says feug shui?
It doesn’t look anything like either of those. Royal is much darker and more of a true crayola blue. Suzi is darker, dustier and more grayed.
grape pop is close enogh that i really don’t need funkey donkey (hey they’re very close in color) plus i got CG already the res are eh
i think that green looks really nice on you
I actually quite like the variety in this collection! Those pale shades are very flattering but not boring
I’m feeling very eh about these. The colors are nice, but not very original.
Really love the purples and blues, the green and yellow are different than most other greens and yellows but these colors never look good on me.
I gonna have to add OGRE TO TOP BLUE to my wish list, it’s awesome.
I think my favorite might be Rumple’s Wiggin’, though it seems close enough to Light As Air that I don’t need it. I like Who the Shrek Are You, I don’t have anything similar, so I may pick that up. Thanks for the comparisons!
Okay so I NEED What’s With The Cattitude? and Rumple’s Wiggin! I might pass out on Funky Donkey because I have Grape pop which is very close in my opinion. Thank you so much for the comparison swatches!
I’m so hot for that Ogre-the-Top.
For the Funky Dunky, which one would you suggest more, based on formula, Funky Dunky or Grape Pop?
Ogre-The-Top-Blue looks a lot like Sally Hansons Xtreme Wear Pacific Blue (which I adore and is on my toes right now)
I actually like all of them, but if I get any, it’ll be the greens, because I have China Glaze Light as Air and Maybelline Pie in the Sky (which might be a dupe for What’s with the Cattitude). But then again, you can never have too many blues…even if you want the dupe, CHina Glaze Bahimian Escape too. Haha.
Hmm…I think Cattitude and Pie in the Sky couldn’t be more different. Pie is more periwinkle to me.
Pie In The Sky is very different and the formula isn’t up to par compared to OPI. But that’s just my opinion. Between Funky Dunkey and Grape Pop? Hmmm… that’s a hard one. I think cool toned girls might like Grape Pop better because it’s got more blue in it. The formulas are very similar in terms of consistency and application so you could always go for the one with the brush you like better (flat & wide or round & thin).
Great post Michelle! I like the other nail polish options, they are so similar
A little disappointed with this collection. There are many dupes!
Fiercely Fiona is just wow.. the perfect shade of chartreuse.. i really, really hope it looks good with my skin tone!
I really love these colors, which is why I already own the dupes. I have dupes for ALL of them, dang. I’m excited to try and get them in our spa, because we don’t have any other OPIS or Essies like these. I might get the Fiona one myself. I have Mismas too
I love the collection, especially Ogre-The-Top-Blue is amazing!
Great collection!! Yay no pinks or reds
Wow. Just wow!
It’s not only this collection to have dupes though…it seems like this season is all about pastels: China Glaze, Illamasqua, Barry M, all of these brands have made a combination of light purple, light yellow, light blue, light pink.
And everywhere there’s a lot of turquoise and mint green.
I remember last summer coming with more options…
Still, I like the look so I think I’m gonna be wearing a lot of pastels myself.
I’d like to pick up some of these but china glaze is so much cheaper here ( € 6.50 vs € 15) and since I already have an awful lot of nail polishes…I dunno!
Thanks a lot for the review!!!
I love these. I am not the hugest OPI fan but to me Funky Dunkey looks like a must have for sure.
Hey Michelle!
I noticed that after RBL Mismas came out similar purple cremes showed up on the nail scene, like CG Grape Pop and now OPI Funky Dunkey. Isn’t that funny? Just when you get what you want other companies decide to finally put out a deep purple creme.
I’ll be picking up Who The Shrek Are You? I’m glad they didn’t include reds and pinks, but I would have liked to see a glitter, ala Absolutely Alice, but in Shrek green/Fiona yellow green.
This collection is amazing! I love it! Can’t wait to get all of them and match them up for mani-pedis as you suggested.. Good idea! Thanks for swatches/comparisons!
i love the Rumple’s Wiggin’ and What’s With The Cattitude? the best
Looks like Fiercely Fiona and OCC’s Wasabi are dupes, though the latter may be a tad darker.
Oh I haven’t seen Wasabi. I’ll have to check it out.
Oh I’m loving Ogre-The-Top Blue and What’s With The Cattitude?!
I think these are gorgeous, loving the pale blue, the lilac and am strangely excited by the weird yellow green! As usual great photos.
Yay, I don’t need any! The only one I like is the Misa dupe, and I already own that.
I’m in LOVE! I can’t wait to get my hands on these!
I’m loving them all,but especially the purples.Hard to believe that it took 3 coats to get it to look like the color from the bottle tho.
For me it was 3 coats. I apply thin coats since thick coats lead to chipping. I try to show the polishes how they should be applied and relate my experiences. For others it may be a two-coater. It all depends on the application.
I love that these are all creme colors. I especially like RW and the cattitude. Makes me feel all summer-y even though we still got snow on the ground here in Finland.
I recently found your blog and I’m hooked! I was wondering if anyone here knows where I could order OPI polishes (and others) in a more reasonable price. Here they cost maybe 8-10 euros a pop which is about 11-13,5 dollars and we only have the boring pinks and reds…
I’m already drooling over Parlez-vous OPI from the french collection and now these!! Help me, dr. Phil…
I’ve heard that a lot of international fanatics feel paying the shipping price to order from US e-tailers is worth it because the polish is cheaper. I believe that Head2ToeBeauty.com ships overseas. Email them for a quote based on the number of polishes you intend to order. Some brands aren’t able to shipped outside the US so make sure you look for that warning on each brand’s polish page.

These are all so amazing…some are weird, but amazing…I just love that there are not pinks or reds. I think I might have to get them all. I agree with Kara you NEVER have too many blues!!!
Thanks for all the comparisons…your hard work is really appreciated!
Would have liked to see WTSAY in their suede formula, so that it would visually be closer to Shrek’s skin texture in the movies. Don’t think any are must-haves, but it’s nice to see OPI break out of their box. Wish they’d do more adventurous shades and textures like they did years ago.
Oh that’s a fun idea! I wonder if we’ll see more Suedes. They seemed to be much more popular than the Mattes.
Ahhh, you’ve just made me so happy with this announcement…I love the collection!
Just wondering if you could do a comparison swatch between OPI Banana Bandanna, Fiercely Fiona and China Glaze Lemon Fizz?
Understandable if you’re too busy, but thanks anyway!!
Lemon Fizz is much lighter than the other two. Fiona has a greenish tinge to it that sets it apart from butter/lemon yellows like Banana Bandanna and Lemon Fizz. It’s unique in that respect but not as easy to pull of because of its fuggishness.
All of these are so pretty! Most of them are so similar to the colors I’m already getting from the China Glaze spring collection though, so I’ll probably give them a pass…
…Besides that ogre green! It’s so ugly it’s pretty, I must have it
I completely adore this collection. It has exceeded my expectations by a mile! I really enjoy wearing unique colours, so this collections really pulls me in.
I think What’s With The Cattitude is prob my fave! Although I am really excited for Who The Shrek Are You?
I’m really curious as to how Ogre-The-Top Blue compares to the recent Suzi Says Feng Shui? I noticed a couple other people commenting about that?
So happy you swatched these for us! Thanks!
It’s so very different than Suzi Says Feng Shui. SSFS is darker and more dusty/grayed than this. They are nothing alike. Ogre is much brighter with a very summery feel.
Good to know. Thanks for the answer <3
