Go Green Week – Sally Hansen Grass Slipper

sally-hansen-grass-slipper-complete-salon-manicure It’s Go Green Week on ALU! In celebration of Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd I’m reviewing some of the great green polishes from this season that I haven’t yet shared. Included with the reviews are tips on how you can “green” your manicure routine.

Last winter I was in Michigan visiting friends when I made pit stop at Meijer’s to check out the Massini brand of nail polishes that I’ve heard so much about.  The word on the interwebs is that Massini is made by Color Club and some of the polishes are dupes for the holographic CC’s.

Of course, I got completely sidetracked when I spotted a bright green polish in the Sally Hansen rack.  I saw the Spring Tracy Reese shades backstage at Fashion Week last fall but hadn’t seen the core colors yet.  Grass Slipper from the Complete Salon Manicure line jumped into my cart and it’s a fantastic color.  Check it out after the jump!

If you missed my gushing rave for the Complete Salon Manicure formula when I wore it during NYFW, check out my review in my NOTD Challenge post. Long story short, the formula is smooth, glossy and long wearing even without base & top coat.  Though with Grass Slipper I HIGHLY recommend wearing a base coat to avoid staining.  Blue and green polishes are notorious for staining so always wear a base with those types of colors or learn to embrace smurf fingers.

Grass Slipper is a lime green that is very close to the paint in one of our bedrooms.  The one the boyfriend uses as his office.  I love unique wall colors and in our house you’ll find red, two greens, slate blue, yellow and purple. The green in the office/bedroom is called Jalapeno Jelly by Valspar and while I LOVE the color, Valspar paint is crap.  Seriously, avoid the brand at all costs.  Getting that instead of Behr was like the worst decision ever.

Getting back to Grass Slipper, the lacquer flows on the nail easily and dries with a nice glossy sheen though it’s not all that pigmented.  As I noted in my initial review of this line, the colors all seem a bit diluted so you need three coats to get them opaque.  As compared to the more yellow-based OPI Who The Shrek Are You? this color is much more flattering on me because it’s more green.  The overly yellowish greens make me look deathly

Now I know the brush is pretty polarizing among Fanatics but I personally love it. I like the curved tip that fits perfectly along my cuticle line. What I don’t like is the inconsistency. They aren’t all cut the same so I’ve had to do some trimming. Also, the long flat stick grabs paint like there’s no tomorrow so you REALLY have to wipe if off well to avoid excess polish flowing on the nail. All those things aside, I’m extremely pleased with Grass Slipper.

Go Green Week Nail Tip: Help the environment by properly disposing of your nail polish and treatments.  You CAN NOT just throw nail polish bottles in the trash, even if they are empty or dried up.  We’re dealing with hazardous chemicals here that can leach into the soil and contaminate groundwater.  Never pour polish down the sink or into a trash can.  Call your trash service and ask about hazardous waste disposal and take the time to responsibly dispose of your old polish.

Grass Slipper from the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure line is available now at drugstores nationwide.  Prices vary by location but keep your eyes on the weekly circulars for BOGOs and 50% off sales.

What do you think of Grass Slipper?  Who else is in love with the Complete Salon Manicure line?  Do we have any detractors?  Are you wearing green for Earth Day?  Or just wearing green period?

Disclosure: I purchased this polish from Meijer’s.

Love Grass Slipper. One of the staples in my Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection (along with Calypso Blue.) Hate the streakiness, and you’re absolutely right about three coats.

But Valspar? Just painted a whole room with Dust Bunny and had a lovely time with it. What problems did you have with Valspar?

(Hey, at least it’s still “paint” we’re talking about, LOL.)

I have the same feelings about the sally hansen complete salon manicure brush! It gets great coverage and is the perfect size but youre right, it does pick up a little too much polish so its easy for things to get messy!

  3. caleal says:

OMG- I feel really stupid now for NOT knowing you can’t throw nail polish away. It makes sense, but I’ve never connected the dots on it… eek.

  4. I love the curve of the brush but find that the bristles are too short, making them kind of stiff resulting in uneven application. (of course it evens out with more coats) But the inconsistency of the cut of the curve of the bristles is AWFUL!! I have never seen polish bristles be this awfully done. someone was sleeping on the quality control part of the assembly line.

I bought four color and ended up returning two of them with the messed up bristles. I instead purchased two Rimmel polishes from their Lasting Finish Pro collection one of almost identical color (without side to side swath proof though). And the brushes are BETTER than the sally hansens ones. they’re wide and flat with a slight curve on the end. The quality of the polishes is great. PLUS it’s HALF THE PRICE!

to say the least i was a bit bummed with the sally hansen line. which is unusual b/c i usually love sally hansen. :(
    oh well.
    better luck next time ^_^

I have not tried Grass Slipper, but I have tried the ‘Complete Manicure Salon’ line and I have to say I am not a huge fan of the formula. I do have Sally Hansen ‘Insta – Dri’ in Mint Sprint on my nails as we speak and I love it! $OPI ‘Leaf him at the Altar’ was put on my toes last week and promptly covered up with Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear’Pacific Blue’ because I did not have time to start all the way over. I am not impressed with the formula of any of the $OPI bottles I have purchased.

  6. Jen says:

What a happy green color. I’ve been wearing Rescue’s Orbis Non Sufficit pedi and am loving its foresty sophistication.

  7. Jasmine says:

I’m truly loving the new complete salon manicure line. What is the trick to making it last longer? Mine chip after two days. I use a base coat and a top coat. I really like the grass slipper but I’m not really a green fingernail kind of person. More likely to wear a green shirt.

  8. Jackie S. says:

This reminds me of the Shrek color, but prettier I do not have any of the Salon Manicure Line, I’m still hunting for “hidden treasure”. Do the have a nice blue for spring in this line??

  9. Rebecca says:

I am in LOVE with the Complete Salon Manicure line. I was skeptical because they’re expensive for a drug store brand, but stocked up when they were on sale for $5 a bottle recently at Walgreens. I absolutely love the brush, for me it makes application extremely easy. The formula is amazing as well in that it’s ultra-glossy with no top coat! Yay!

You will have to give me lessons on how to use their brush. I felt like I was getting carpal tunnel bleeding all the excess paint off the brush EVERY SINGLE TIME it was withdrawn from the bottle. Had to return the two Complete Salon Manicures I bought when they first came out. I even thought it was a factory defect until I realized if both colors had the same brush, it was intentional. I ruined a friend’s towel when giving her a pedicure recently because SH put the same brush on its Insta-Dri line. I had to bleed the brush out every single time it came out of the bottle, didn’t do it completely one time, and a giant drip came down the stem of the brush before I could catch it or even see it (it was on the underside of the flat stem). I cannot fathom a worse design of a brush, where it’s always overloaded and you have little to no control. Maybe if I had to paint the side of a barn, the SH brush would be helpful. I don’t get how anyone can enjoy using it.

  10. This colos is so different. I have never used something like that, however I am completly opened to do that.

I am from Brazil and I loved your blog.

  11. Alexis says:

While I don’t love the brush, I have a weakness for the SH CSM line! Now I’m gonna have to go pick up Grass Slipper! Thanks for the swatches Michelle!

  12. Samantha says:

I have a lot of reasons to wear green polish this week! There’s earth day of course but also I’m seeing Ralph Nader speak (green party), today’s 4/20 (which I don’t celebrate but still works for the green), and equal pay day (green=cash).

  13. stephanie says:

wow this is so weird. i literally just came back from CVS [notice that i check this blog so religiously that it's the first thing i open when i get back to my computer :)] and was looking at the sally hansen rack and examining all the bright greens.

love that you’re doing green-themed posts! yay earth week. <3

  14. melli says:

    Hi Michelle,

I keep passing by this in the store, want to buy it, and tell myself that I have dupes….now that I see your swatch, I must have it :).

Excellent point about disposal of the bottles, btw!

  15. Kara says:

That’s a pretty color, but I still think they’re all overpriced, plus, it doesn’t really grab me. I bought one, Fairy Teal (opaque in one coat!-but I did two, due to a messup on a nail), and while I LOVE it, I doubt I’ll be buying anymore.

  16. Wow, loving the green week theme! And this color looks stellar on you!

  17. Amy says:

Congrats on the NYT story! your blog is certainly worth mentioning whenever it comes to nail-worthy news!

  18. Janet says:

Thanks so much for the “green” tip. I know to bring old paint to the hazardous waste roundup, but I didn’t think of nail polish.

I will save old bottles for the roundup in the future! We have them here twice a year, for free.

  19. Debbie says:

Love this colour. Am desperate for this line to come to the UK – fingers crossed sometime in the Summer last I heard.

  20. Chickadee says:

I love that color!! I wonder how it compares with China Glaze’s Tree Hugger?

  21. amandapm says:

Off topic here but I just saw you quoted in the New York Times! Fashion & Style section, April 19th byline (and as such you probably already know about it but) – congrats! That’s amazing. Rock on!

  22. Stef says:

I’ve been tossing old nail polish in the trash forever, but never again! I didn’t even think about it being a contaminate! Dang it! My bad!

In my house we have a red bedroom, a purple bedroom, a pink bedroom, a yellow kitchen and dining room, and an orangey brown in the living room. Color is good!

  23. ReaderRita says:

I LOVE this color, and have worn it several times with different base coats, but it stains my nails every time! I’ll have to try my trusty Zoya Anchor next time, and forget ridge filling base coats…
I think that this Complete Salon Manicure line from SH really wears well, though. I’m terrifically tough on my nails, and the mani holds up. Rock on, SH!
As to the price, the saleswoman at Walgreens told me that this is priced more because it’s formulated to be base coat, color and top coat all in one; conceivably, it’s all you should need. (Hence the “Complete” in their product name, I guess..) But I beg to differ, considering my staining drama…

  24. Rainbow says:

Hate hate hate! the SH Complete Salon Manicure polishes I tried. This looks like a lovely color though! I think I will pick it up if I see it, i’ve only got three greens in my collection.

  25. TheBeautyElf says:

This is a polish I would totally wear to see the new Shrek movie!

  26. TheBeautyElf says:

This is the perfect colour to wear if you were going to see the new Shrek movie!

  27. Jane says:

This is a brilliant color and matches your site so well too!
I wasn’t convinced about green till I bought a fab green dress and painted my toe and finger nails almost the same green as you’ve got here – goes perfectly!

  28. TLM says:

No one mentioned this, but I guess I might as well. I’m a huge fan of lime shades, and so I grabbed this as soon as it came out. But the name bothered me as possibly offensive to Asians. “Grass Slipper” was an obvious play on “Glass Slipper”, but because of the known tendency for native Asian speakers to confuse “l” with “r,” I thought it was a little insensitive. I’m not Asian myself, but had a Korean coworker who made me more sensitive to things like these that non-Asians often give little thought to. I actually cringed when I first saw the name for this shade.

There are many Asian-run nail salons and nail techs in the industry, and I think this is something Sally Hansen should be more sensitive to.
