mac-riveting-matte-nail-polish-spring-2010 MAC is hitting us with a lot of nail color this spring. Almost all the collections include nail polish and Riveting, MAC’s ode to 80s rocker chic, is no exception. They’re hitching their wagon on the matte polish train with three true, flat mattes. Unlike the Jin Soon polishes that were rumored to be matte (they were cremes) these are matte polishes as we’ve come to know them.

One thing that is a bit different about the Riveting nail polishes is that, unlike other brands that included one finish per matte collection, Riveting has two cremes (think OPI Matte) and one shimmer (a la OPI Suede).  If you still don’t have your fill of the matte look, take a peek at these after the jump!

MAC’s matte polishes are 3-Free and behave as we’ve come to expect from the genre.  They dry fast, are unforgiving when it comes to nail imperfections and become more satin over time due to water and oil exposure.  In applying them I found that three coats work best.  It’s not necessarily a pigmentation issue rather a case of evening out any rough spots.  If you excel at application you can probably get away with two coats that just wasn’t my experience.

Studded is the hands down fave of this collection.  The consensus seems to be that if we’re talking matte polish vs top coat, a shimmery matte is preferred over a flat creme.  And since I have yet to come across a silver matte this light (most look charcoal) it’s a winner in my book.  In fact, of all my matte polishes this is the one I chose to take to NYFW for a day when a full mani wasn’t possible.  I just never got around to wearing it.

Wham, Bam, Glam is a dark taupe along the lines of OPI You Don’t Know Jacques Matte.  In fact, unless you’re really looking for the difference between the two, you’d swear they were the same.  So if you’re looking for a matte this shade and don’t own the YDKJ Matte, this is another option.

Black Enough? really needs no explanation.  It’s flat. It’s black. It’s creme.  It definitely fits in with the rocker aesthetic happening in Riveting but it’s not exactly a showstopper.  It actually reminds me of a black chalkboard.

Bottom line: If you’re going to pick up just one of these polishes, I would suggest Studded.

You can find the MAC Riveting collection Nail Lacquers now at your local MAC counter and online MACCosmetics.com.  MAC nail polishes retail for $12/ea.

How do you feel about more mattes coming out?  Are you still wearing them?  Do you think the trend will truck along until Fall or is it dead?

I really don’t mind new mattes coming out, but these are pretty much already done.
I’d love to see some new colors, they could even do neon or pastel mattes for all I care. These by Mac look a bit boring.

    Great swatches, as always, though!!

Studded is the only one I’m buying. Better run out & get it since these sell out like….well, hot np. :)

    “OPI

Thank you for catching that! My proofreading skills failed me today! I meant that MAC’s mattes are similar to the other matte polishes we’ve seen from Orly, Zoya, OPI, etc.

  5. Jen says:

Mattes look good on me (seems to go with my freckles or something) so I’ll wear them for as long as I want. The only thing is matte nail polish pretty much disappears (falls off? scrapes off?) from my nails overnight so I use a regular nail polish color and then put China Glaze Matte Magic over it and then the manicure lasts. I do like Mac’s Studded, too.

  6. Nicole says:

I do like a good matte but none of these are screaming my name. I was hoping that Wham Bam Glam was a burgundy/wine color as it looked a little like it from the bottle pic. Studded is kind of pretty though.

Studded looks to have a similar finish as the Orly Metal Chic collection. I still yearn for Iron Butterfly, but alas, the Sally stores in my area ran out quick.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

That’s a shame. I randomly saw a display of the original Orly mattes at a local CVS. It was one with a pretty big beauty department so maybe try one near you since they carry Orly. I’ve never seen seasonal collections there before but it’s worth a try.

Studded is a STUD! Hands down! The others are been there done that”.

  9. Wow, studded really is pretty, and I’m not even that huge of a fan of matte polishes!

  10. Aubree says:

I’m a MAC girl at heart, but somehow have never bought one of their polishes. Studded may just be my first! I’m loving metallics lately.

  11. Victoria says:

huh, i dont know, studded is unique but ive always prefer true mattes and this is a first black matte nail polish that i know that i could purchase. so ill definitely take black enough since i absolutely love black. it makes me happy that i could get it. =)

  12. Nailtastic says:

Seeing your picture of Studded really makes me regret that I did’nt buy it. And now it’s probably sold out. I’m gonna have stop by a MAC counter tomorrow and see. :-)

  13. Meg says:

In general I am not a huge fan of mattes because I just adore that glossy finish of a perfect creme. However, I am surprised at how attracted I am to the shimmery matte of Studded! I’ve been very “off” shimmers and glitters lately (they can just be too much sometimes) but I think the matte shimmers might be a good middle ground for me. Not to mention that Studded is an amazing gunmetal silver that is ROCKIN’.

  14. Autumn says:

I bought Black Enough? because I could not find any Matte black. Everywhere I went they would be sold out! Anyways, I love how fast it dries but it doesn’t have ANY staying power. I will get a chip in a matter of hours. Is there a Matte base or top coat that I can use to help with this? BYW I LOVE your site. Been checking it out for 4 days straight now.

  15. Lili says:

I love these 3 where could we find these to purchase? i have looked but no luck……

Unfortunately they were part of a limited edition collection. Your best bet is eBay though who knows what they are charging
