Chanel Noir Et Or Paris-Shanghai Collection Preview

chanel-noir-et-paris-shanghai-collection-1 For the “Metiers D’Art” fashion show in Shanghai, Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, created an exclusive collection, Noir Et Or. The collection is a glamorous fantasy of Shanghai in the 30’s and 40’s as Coco Chanel herself may have imagined it. The black and gold eyes and nails complimented the gilded and jet black accents shown on the runway.

Like the Paris-Moscou Collection, the Noir Et Or Paris-Shanghai Collection is a limited edition set of colors taken straight from the runway.  I have to admit I’m a bit surprised to see Chanel coming out with a matte polish at this point in the game.  They’ve always been trendsetters not followers so I’m curious to see how Black Velvet is received.

    Seen it all already. YAWN.

  2. Ann says:

did not see that one coming.

  3. stubby says:

Illusion looks pretty but id have to see it in person and swatch it since it will be transparent.

  4. Altea says:

    no for god’s sake no!!!

  5. Susanna says:

I would have said matte had had its moment. But I wonder if, given the influence of Chanel Beaut

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I just don’t see women running out to get the matte even if it is Chanel. Matte has been pretty polarizing as is it.

  6. Stephanie says:

Ack, I’m so sick of mattes. Especially black mattes. It’s so not worth paying $25 for a polish that will chip in a day, right? I mean, the wear time on mattes is drastically reduced from that of a “normal” glossy polish. Sad.

Also, I agree with Susanna. The shadow compact looks really beautiful…

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I hear ya. It’s one thing to spend that kind of money on a polish that wears well but one that chips? I honestly wonder how it will sell.

  7. shebelle says:

I am sorry but this ad is fugly! The colors and the lighting totally make her look washed out. The people responsible for this ad should get a good talking to. I am talking here as an aspiring photographer – I also do all the make-up on my models and if I’d bring a picture like that to one of my teachers they would not be happy with me.

On the colors – Illusion d’or COULD be interesting. I hope they send ALU samples, so we can see how it looks and if it’s worth buying!

    • V. says:

i don’t believe that the photo of the girl is the ad. it was a backstage beauty shot before the Paris-Shanghai show.

  8. TJ says:

My eyes glazed over at the gold nail enamel. It’s a personal weakness. I guess if anybody could bring matte black nail polish back, it would be Chanel.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I’m skeptical about the matte black. With the price tag and lack of wear time, it seems like a lot to ask of consumers.

  9. Deb says:

I’ve always seen Chanel as being a bit behind on trends. I mean, OPI did taupes long before Chanel did Particulere. Green has been hot among nail enthusiasts for ages, but suddenly Chanel are trendsetters because they do Jade? That’s ridiculous. It only seems like Chanel are trendsetters, because fashion industry folks and people who aren’t hardcore about nail polish don’t pay attention to what professional nail brands are doing. That, and because it’s Chanel…

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I didn’t think Jade was trendsetting but Vamp, Black Satin and Blue Satin certainly were. Though in regards to Jade, it debuted on the runway in winter before any of the other mint greens came out last year. Then suddenly there was a barrage of mint greens.

    • ocelot1 says:

LOL ITA, i posted about this below…chanel released a mint green now…but what about opi releasing creme de menthe ages ago? i mean it was shimmery, but still minty looking. it wasnt trendy back then, but still. its been done already

      • All Lacquered Up says:

Well then technically pretty much every color has been done and no brand is a trendsetter. My point was that last year a lot of brands came out with mint greens but Jade was the first one to be seen when it hit the runway last winter.

  10. Sara says:

I love how it’s been manicured in the ad, I wish wish wish I had the steady hand to recreate the black tips on a gold base!

  11. Khabeer says:

i’m gonna skip the matte & just get the satiny gold & glitter. I really HATE matte nail polish

  12. Sandy says:

Well I can see that I probably will purchase the Illusion d’or – I’m a sucker for Chanel. It hopefully will be “blingy” enough for layering.

  13. Victoria says:

um, it’s mutual, it doesnt really matter unless you could get it because i cant get a zoya matte. but, it’s nothing new. i wish a drugstore brand or a brand that i could get would make a matte top coat. that would be so much easier…

  14. Christine says:

It’s going to kill. I really wish I wasn’t so in love with everything they do. Why can’t I fall in love with a less expensive brand? Oh well, I have a $25 gift card to Macy’s. Guess what I’ll be buying?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Which one do you think you’ll get? The gold sounds intriguing but I’m curious how it compares to Gold Fiction. The sheer gold is probably great for layering but with such a hefty price tag, I’m sure there’s a comparable dupe out there.

  15. Starlight says:

I love the Chanel black and gold look! I especially love the gold nail laquer!

  16. Vicky Lewy says:

I kinda like the new lines myself, but still not to fond of the price tag lol.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this excellent article!
Please feel free to visit me back!

  17. Katie says:

I love mattes still but will need a review of the formula before I commit. Also, Victoria you might what to check Sally’s Beauty Supply, they had a bunch of China Glaze Magic Matte on sale for $1(they were small bottles and on of the girls said they were getting rid of these because they were expecting the full size bottles)

  18. Chickadee says:

Wow, $25?? Isn’t Chanel polish normally $25?? There is no way that I’d pay that much for such common colors. Chanel polish is a total splurge as it is, so to ask for $2 more is just obnoxious, and then to have to pay shipping from chanel.com? No thanks, I’m going to pass.

    • Chickadee says:

      sorry I meant normally $23

      • jo says:

LE Chanel polish sold in the boutiques are always $25 and some cases $30. I believe the Moscow collection were $30 each so I am quite shocked that the Shanghai collection are not $30 a piece.

  19. Kate says:

this look is something i will pass on! But I wanted to seek your help – I’m planning to ask my manicurist to do a black and white half-moon manicure in May and she asked me if I could find any circle shaped guides/stickers we can put over my nails when she does the second coat of color… do you know of any good (and cheap!) products like that available? tia!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Try the round hole reinforcement labels that you can get an office supply store, like Office Max. Or look for French Manicure guides at a beauty supply store.

      • Kate says:

thank you! p.s. thanks to your wonderful site, i have to ashamedly admit i have bought no less than FIVE blue polishes in 2010 so far and had one more gifted to me by a manicurist (All 3 of Essie’s north fork collection from last year, essie aruba blue, and just last weekend, MAC India Blue) and the gift was CG For Audrey… i am addicted to your site but it is killing my wallet! :)

  20. Kat says:

I wonder how Illusion D’or compares to CND’s Gold Sparkle–the problem I have with Gold Sparkle is that it doesn’t really show up against the lighter colors, and I just look like I have flecks of something embedded in my polish.

  21. kirsten says:

So Black Velvet is the only that is matte right? Illusion d’or and Gold Lame are just regular glossy polish? I hope so because I just can’t get into the whole matte thing. The eyeshadow (gorgeous!) and both gold polishes have potential, but I’ll have to wait and see some swatches of the polishes before I commit especially because I want to see how similar they are to Gold Fiction which I already have.

  22. linda says:

I have Or and love it. But then, I love most Chanel polishes. I looked in my nail drawer to see what I have………… um oh oh. And love your site! It fuels my nail addiction!

  23. Miss QQ says:

Is Black Velvet a matte? If it is I don’t want it. I’m curious as to how Gold Fiction compares to Gold Lame too. Illusion D’or will definitely be mine!

  24. ocelot1 says:

i personally think chanel has been a folower for some time…they werent the ones to come out with the taupe np or turquoise…i feel that they really havent been setting the trend for awhile. and barely releasing a matte now? idk chanel…i just dont know…

  25. Khloe says:

someone knows when this will be up on the site?
    link please?:)

  26. Nicole says:

Oh, no! Not another matte! Chanel should’ve just skipped the entire matte trend and kept up with their gorgeous, glossy, wallet-killing polishes. But I might cave in to Gold Lame. I adore gold polishes, but of course, I’ll be waiting for your review before I splurge. I’ve been looking for a Gold Fiction dupe for ages!

  27. Anita says:

How is the wear on the black matte? I love the deep black pigment – some other mattes out there just don’t quite so black. Can anyone please comment? If it wears well, I will invest in it.

  28. Marsi says:

Did this fab mani. For vacation. Very pleasantly surprised with the long wear of the BLACK VELVET fingertips and toes. Held up all week even in the sand! Amazing deep rich flat black had great coverage on coat one. The flat matte finish prevented this from looking cheap and tacky as it may have with a glossy black. Plan to try this look with a Jade base,or as an update refresher to any existing mani. Well worth the extra $$ for the extra pigment. Will use this lots and get my money’s worth..
