Rescue Beauty Lounge Spring 2010 Swatches & Review

rescue-beauty-lounge-spring-2010-bottles For Spring ’10 Nail Colors, Rescue Beauty Hangs Ten With Proenza Schouler’s cool surfer girls.

“Let’s go surfing now, Everybody’s learning how, Come on and safari with me!” – The Beach Boys.

Being a Midwest girl that never saw the California coast until a few years ago, the Cali surf culture brings up flashes of Gidget, Frankie & Annette flicks, The Beach Boys and Dick Dale’s “Misirlou” which any Pulp Fiction fan would recognize.

I’m sure that’s not at ALL what Proenza Schouler had in mind when they created their Spring ’10 collection.  They envisioned a much hipper surf girl.  One that can ride the big waves with the best of them, then slip on a chic, colorful dress and party all night.  It’s the modern surfer girl that inspired Ji Baek’s Spring collection for Rescue Beauty Lounge.

proenza-schouler-spring-2010-rescue-beauty Now while I love the fun, playful color palette of the line, some of the silhouettes didn’t jibe with me.  Didn’t we all learn during the gunge-era 90s that wrapping shirts around our waists does NOTHING for our figures?  Building them into a dress certainly isn’t going to help, unless you’re a beanpole model.  I give them an A for innovation.

According to Ji, “What I loved about the show was the cool, breezy attitude of the models and the clothes. There was a sense that they’d just put down their surfboards and slipped on their runway dresses, with minimal makeup and salt-styled beach hair.”

Note: The polishes I received are lab samples and not in the RBL formula so I can’t really comment on application or coverage.  Every shade was a flawless two-coater but results may vary.  Though if you’ve ever tried a Rescue creme, you know the drill.  They’re perfectly smooth and well pigmented.

Ji describes Diddy Mow as, “the color of sand through sea water, the moment before you eat it!”  Of course when it comes to green my feelings mirror Violet Beauregarde’s affinity for gum.  “So long as it’s [green], then that’s for me!”  Only Diddy Mow is not just another green. I don’t own a single color even remotely like this.  A grayed mossy hue, the only time I’ve come across anything similar was when I mixed my Ombre Manicure.  Diddy Mow would be the perfect middle color, no?

360 has a dusty, muted quality yet it dries dark and colorful.  This isn’t your everyday sandwashed blue.  It has a vibrancy in its weathered feel.  It’s the color I imagine would be born if the bright blue sky met the salty sea water on the horizon.

Again, I have no real comparisons for 360 though showing it next to Misa Dirty Sexy Money drives home how blue this polish is.

Bangin is a bold, coral-tinged red.  It isn’t overly orange-y so you cool-toned girls should be able to pull it off.  It’s a beautiful color though not my style.  Of course my red-polish-loving boyfriend immediately sung its praises so you red hoarders, and I know you’re out there, will definitely appreciate this one.  Ji does reds extremely well.  They apply so pigmented that all you see is the bottle color, no semi-sheer layers of berry, pink or orange.

The Rescue Beauty Lounge Spring 2010 collection will launch in March/April. RBL polishes retail for $18/ea and can be purchased online from RescueBeauty.com.

What do we think Fanatics?  Are you ready to catch the RBL wave this Spring?

Unlike certain bloggers, I am rather indifferent to green polishes and do not currently own any. Diddy Mow, however, reflects what is probably my favorite green of all time, so I definitely foresee myself shelling out $18 for that come March.

  2. finchburg says:

These all look fabulous! I’m curious how 360 compares to $OPI’s Ocean Love Potion… they could be cousins.

  3. Solveig says:

Wow, Diddy Mow is gorgeous! I also like 360, but I don’t think it’s as unique. Bangin – meh.

  4. TipsToToes says:

I like Diddy Mow the best by far.

  5. AJ says:

RBL is my vice. I’m so utterly in love with their formula that I could care less how much they cost, which is why I own darn near the whole collection. It looks like this launches right at the end of my polish no-buy (I went a little stupid with their December sale), so I will promptly be picking these up!!! Gorgeous colors, as always.

  6. I have thus far restrained myself from ordering from RBL but Diddy Mow looks WAY too tempting. I’m thinking it’s time!

  7. Sarie says:

OMG more punishment for my bank account! Love the blue and the green. When are they out?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I listed it at the bottom of the post but the only info I have says March/April. I imagine it depends on when the final shipment arrives.

  8. Andi says:

360 and Diddy Mow are amazing and unique! Very excited about these two.

  9. Isabelle says:

oh my, both Diddy Mow and 360 are a MUST! Those are gorgeous!

  10. Jaime says:

I love 360 and Diddy Mow. LOVE.

As for Bangin’, I’m with you. It’s gorgeous, but I don’t need it.

  11. Interesting! All three of these colours look great especially 360. Can you tell how different is Diddy Mow to Orbis Non Sufficit?

  12. KittytoKaren says:

    *does the happiest happy dance*

  13. Debbie says:

Love that green, although am sure it would make my hands look horribly red, its lush though!

  14. Candice says:

You know, when I saw the bottles, I wasn’t impressed… but your swatches sold me. They truly are all unique. RBL does it again, but I’ll have to wait for another sale.

  15. ReaderRita says:

Great swatches! They are all gorgeous, as usual for RBL, but I am really diggin’ 360.
(I want to say that NfuOh has something similar, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it…)
And Michelle, your nails are beautiful!
    I aspire to that…

  16. laquermanic says:

The green ones are beautiful, will be purchased. The red one – not exactly one-of-a-kind, but nice. I’m amazed how alike it looks on your nails compared to the bottle color; mine always get much darker on the nails. Hence an often experiented disappointment. :)

    • All Lacquered Up says:

They do dry a touch darker than the bottle shade but that will happen with any polish. Wet polish, like wet paint will always dry a bit darker than the bottle color.

  17. laquermanic says:

BTW, how is the 360 compares to Illamasquas Muse?

  18. Virginia says:

All of the colors are really great (esp. 360!) though, being a California native, I don’t really think “surfer girl” when I see these colors.

  19. innerchild says:

I really like the look of the blue one, “360.” So unique! The green one reminds me of mildew… :S

  20. Faye says:

I’m definitely going to try Diddy Mow and 360. You know what Diddy Mow is almost the exact color of? It was about two years ago, I think, that Estee Lauder had a spring/summer line called Nantucket or something. Anyway, they had an eyeshadow called Sea Grass, I think, and it is almost the exact color of Diddy Mow, but in eye shadow form. I can take a pic later and send it to you for comparison, although of course it’s not the same as side by side swatches.

Anyway, I love that shadow and I think I’ll love this polish too!

  21. Paula says:

Love Diddy Mow and 360, but not so much Bangin. I recently got a bunch of RBL during their sale (including your gorgeous Mismas which I currently have on my toes), and I love their formula. I just wish they weren’t so pricey.

  22. Susanna says:

Bangin is nice, but not so special. Although if the RBL reds are sogood, I might get one just to have. Diddy Mow and 360 are definitely going on my wish list.

As for the Proenza Schouler silhouettes, Lazaro and Jack are so young they probably barely remember the ’90s ;)

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Ha, that’s so true. I remember seeing them on an episode of Behind The Velvet Ropes when they were right out of design school. They looked like babies. Not that they exactly look old now. :)

  23. Misty says:

What a beautiful collection! I think I need of al them – lol

    Your nails look great Michelle!

  24. sandi says:

Bangin reminds me of Essie Lollipop.

  25. stubby says:

    O M G !!!!!

That’s all i have to say!!!!!

  26. Hannah says:

WOW! I love Didy Mow but I’m sure you can’t buy RBL in the UK any more, not online anyway. Such a shame as their colours are fabulous!

  27. DanaCerise says:

Someone said the colors don’t bring to mind surfer girls, but I can imagine vintage surfboards. What I can’t imagine is those models as surfer girls.

  28. Crystie says:

Would you be able to do a side by side comparison of 360 to Sally Hansen’s Gray by Gray?

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I’ll add it to my request list though they aren’t anything alike. Gray by Gray is more of a slate blue whereas 360 leans more teal/aqua in its base color

  29. Ange-Marie says:

craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap! My wallet can’t afford another RBL binge, but I have to have that blue and green. And probably the red too. :( sad wallet, :) happy polish hoarder…

  30. shuzluva says:

Diddy Mow and 360 are lovely. I haven’t worn a reddish creme in I don’t know how long. Probably due to my mom’s 80′s red talons.

I’m totally hooked on the RBL formula. It hasn’t let me down and it wears amazingly well, especially given the punishment my hands go thru on a daily basis.

Question: I know 360 is a creme, but is the color close to China Glaze Custom Kicks? I’m guessing 360 is more blue.

    Thanks Michelle!

  31. Lisa says:

I love 360. I am a blue/green polish addict. I like Diddy Mow for originality, but I would have to see it on. Hopefully RBL will have another 50% percent off sale in the spring.

  32. TL says:

Diddy Mow is what I wished Orbis Non Sufficit would be, I’m excited!

  33. Sian says:

Love all three! They make me consider the ridiculous Cdn shipping :)

  34. Megan says:

I’m such a sucker for dusty teals that I’m willing to shell out almost $30 shipped for 360. Diddy Mow is really pretty, but it wouldn’t work with me. Bangin is meh for $18.

Michelle, could you swatch 360 along side ChG Flyin High (if you have a minute). I have FH, and, to me, it’s the blue version of DSM, so I wonder how 360 compares. I bet 360 is darker, but I’m still curious.

  35. cora says:

yes! I second the comparison request of 360 to ChG Custom Kicks (and $OPI ocean love potion)! They all look great!

  36. Diddy Mow is going to be my favorite out of the bunch! I think it would have been a great color for the Ombre Manicure too:-)

  37. TLM says:

I’m with most people on this one. Like the Diddy Mow and 360, not crazy about the red. I just got rid of pretty much all my reds, especially the metallic ones. They just didn’t feel like “me” anymore. I am generally not doing any metallics anymore, and I like the Rescue Beauty/StrangeBeautiful trend of having mostly cremes.

I agree with a few other posters that “surfer girl” doesn’t really fit the feel of this collection. If going with the beach theme, I would rename them Seaglass (WTH does “Diddy Mow” mean, anyway??), Seafoam, and Buoy (see this for an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buoy).

  38. swedishfishing says:

These are soooo perfect! I can’t wait! One tiny question for you, though: I looked at the swatches and review on Scrangie’s site as well, and she mentioned that Diddy Mow and 360 have a very subtle shimmer– did you have any thoughts about that? I love RBL cremes and these look like cremes in the pictures I’ve seen– do you think that’s accurate? Is the shimmer just kind of a way to highlight or brighten the color, or is it actually a sparkling shimmer polish? In any case, they are gorgeous and I’m eagerly awaiting their release. Thanks for your lovely pictures!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I didn’t comment on the shimmer because it’s really ineffectual. If you hold the bottle in direct light you can see the faintest hint of shimmer but you have to be looking for it and you don’t see it on the nail. I assume it’s their to add depth to the color. I remember when I talked to the CND artists who create the custom blends for fashion week, they told me that a lot of time if they use a polish with a bit of shimmer in a mix, it’s simply to add depth. That the shimmer doesn’t appear on the nail and, that for all intents and purposes, it is a cream finish.

  39. JaimeSTL says:

Diddy Mow will be a MUST in collection this summer! Reminds me of army fatigues but in a sexy way. 360 is a great summer color and I’m interested to see what I will look like when my hands are far less pale. Winter. Ugh. Thanks!!

  40. Khabeer says:

So Diddy Mow & 360 will be MINE! Ugh I’m drifting off in daydreams thinking about them already. So much for my bank account! =(

  41. Nora says:

Just when I thought MAC Blue India was going to be my spring polish obsession, I see Diddy and 360. Wow. :D
I too am curious to see how different 360 is from Orbis. I want it to be the spring/summer version of Orbis; not just lighter, but not quite so heavy.
I really dig Bangin, but I can’t help but think I’ve got that color covered somewhere with Chinoise, ChG Vermillion, or even OPI Monsooner or Later.

  42. Jaimi says:

The Diddy Mow polish takes me back to when i was younger, and my mom would whip out her Avon mud mask, this color matches it perfectly. Kind of a daja vu for me! Nice color but i dont think i could get past that memory of the mud mask.

  43. stubby says:

Just got the e-mail last nite that these three beauts have been shipped and are on their way to me. YAY…can’t wait!!!

  44. Joanna says:

Does anyone know how similar Bangin’ is to NARS Dovima? I own the latter and not sure if it’s worth it to get the new RBL color, especially if the two are carbon copies of one another.

    Thank you!!

  45. Laura says:

I was a little iffy about them, but I just did the second round of pre-orders for 360 and bangin.
I’m not a fan of diddy mow, it reminds me of the Spanish moss that hangs all over our trees in Houston. I just can’t get over how ugly the color is to me. :( I wish I could.

  46. Elusive M says:

Weird how the Diddy Mow that was released seems to be much less green/yellow than the version shows in this post…

  47. Julia says:

I like 360 and Bangin, but $18 is a bit too much for nail polish!
