Lancôme Pop Petrol Swatches, Review & GIVEAWAY

lancome-pop-petrol-le-vernis-o-my-rose Fanatics, take a second and glare at the bottle of green Lancôme gorgeousness on the left.  That’s right, I said glare! Why?  Because for some inexplicable reason Lancôme has decided to NOT release Pop Petrol from the Spring Ô My Rose collection in the US.

You see, I got all sorts of giddy when I saw promo pics of this collection popping up on beauty blogs left and right.  I raced to get more details from the reps at Lancôme only to find out that Pop Petrol would not grace us with its presence.  Oh the humanity!  So, you lucky, lucky European Fanatics, this time you win!

However, thanks to my friends at Lancôme I not only have the chance to tease share this baby’s beauty with you, I am able to send a bottle of Pop Petrol to live with one lucky Fanatic.  Find out more after the jump!

Pop Petrol (aka Deep Water Green) is a mysterious lass.  A murky, shimmery shade of blue-green, this deep, luscious lacquer has a chameleon-like appearance.  When I first pulled it from the box I was a tad disappointed.  Where was the vivid green from the teaser pics?  It looked like a steely teal blue.  It’s not until applied that you really appreciate the color.  In warmer indirect lighting (a sunny day) you really see the forest green come alive.  Like a greener Lippmann Don’t Tell Mama.

But in cool (shade) lighting the teal takes the stage with a bit of charcoal undertones.  In this light I actually thought it might be a dupe for the discontinued CoverGirl NailSlicks Mystic Peacock but no dice. btw, CoverGirl BRING THAT BACK!

Under artificial light, you see that deep jewel-toned emerald the promo pics promised.

The application of Pop Petrol is perfection. The wide flat brush is a little too rigid for my taste but the formula glides on with ease, covering the nail in two thin coats.

Like I said above, Pop Petrol is only available overseas. So swappers, it’s time to start working your European connections.

Or just enter my giveaway. One lucky winner will receive a bottle of Pop Petrol to call your own. You have from now until Sunday January 17th at 11:55pm EST to enter. One entry per person.

US RESIDENTS ONLY!

Tell me what you think of Pop Petrol in the comments!

I am not sure where you get your info, but none of the L’Oreal companies test on animals any longer. They haven’t since 1989. Just go to their website, click on contact us, product support, and enter the question “Do you test on animals”. My Mimaw has been using Lancome for years and she doesn’t seem to be like the kind to use animal tested products, so it worried me when I read your post. Rest assured, you can indulge in this little bit of Lancome heaven.

      • Janie says:

The L’Oreal page you quote goes on to say that they use ingredients tested on animals. The reason is because “new chemical ingredients must be tested on animals.” What a cop-out. Instead of flooding our bodies and environment with harmful new ingredients that “must” be tested on animals, why not do the right thing and just freaking stop it? Use companies like this and sell your souls.

      • Sideral says:

Janie says it all. They do believe some ingredients must be tested on animals, so no, I won’t buy from them until that stops.

There are plenty of other companies that do not test on animals and are cruelty free, so I’ll stick to them. I just can’t support a company that thinks that animal testing is okay… I just can’t feel pretty, confident or happy by using products that have made suffered innocent creatures!

  13. Katy M says:

Oh my gosh! Is this bad news that it won’t be coming to the US or good news that this color exists??? I guess it’s time to give one to our overseas buddies. They seem to have a hard time finding a lot of the lovelies I covet. :)

  14. Virginia says:

When I saw Pop Petrol months ago, I immediately penciled the release date in my planner (to be fair, that’s really why I bought the planner in the first place). Then came the news that it wouldn’t be released in the US. (Why, oh, why!) So sad. But your swatches make me happy :D

  15. Kara says:

Wow, that is very pretty. The first picture reminded me of Sephora’s Absinthe Makes the Heart, but I don’t think that was very blue at all!

  16. riss says:

Awesome looking color but how sad that it won’t be available here :(

  17. jane says:

    ditto sideral

  18. Isabelle says:

    It’s beautiful!

  19. Nora says:

It’s a beautiful color and I love that it can vary so widely by lighting.
Unfortunately, it’s a bit too dark (too charcoal), and I think the subtle differences would be lost on my skintone (kinda like how MACs Beyond Jealous went black on me). :|

  20. KittytoKaren says:

I’m not the biggest green person around but this colour has me speechless! It’s just *perfect*…dark and moody but still extremely elegant….ooooo….

  21. amberski says:

Oooh, so pretty! Too bad it isn’t available here- I love green!! thanks for the giveaway though. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

  22. Rebecca Shelby says:

As someone who is still in love with darks and “just shy of black” shades ranging from light my sapphire to essie’s Wicked, I would LOVE to add this to my arsenal!!!

  23. Niki says:

Stunning. What a shame it won’t be released here. Can you even imagine what it will go for on Evil Bay? ;)

  24. Lissa says:

Oh, this color is perfect! I love it!

  25. moeysullivan says:

‘scuse me while I swoon. How I long to see tiny, deep dream pools of it on my tips…oh, yeah, we don’t win it by writing, do we? Anyway, I have to figure out how to get some.

And, Michelle, how does anyone in North America have nice cuticles after the weather this past week? This is the first day of 2010 that Louisville has seen temps above freezing. No way I would send a picture of mannequin hands right now. Your fingers are a miracle.

  26. Jennifer says:

Such a lovely color. I’m starting my nail polish collect and the more shades of green I see, the more I love.

  27. sarah says:

  34. Kristina says:

    It’s available in Canada too!

  36. Maggie says:

    arg i want.

  37. lacquerholic says:

My inner lemming has awoken. I wonder if this is a dupe to the infamous OPI’s Jasper Jade?

  38. Maggie says:

i totally put in the wrong email address by accident. I have like 20 of them.

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Maggie, email me with the email address you entered and what the correct one should be and I’ll fix your entry.

  39. Phoebe says:

Wowww that is a beautiful color. I’m not a big green person, but I love it.

  40. color riot says:

Lancome! Whaadaya thinkin’? Release this here! Geeze!

    I absolutely love that color!

  44. lwenzelb says:

Wow. A beautiful color. Good thing I’m headed to Europe soon! Adding this to my shopping list right now.

  45. Tamara Young says:

I’ve been stalking this color for months since seeing it in a magazine I was studying for a shoot.

I’ll admit, I am GREEN with envy!

I must have this color, I simply must…..

    :)

  46. shaima says:

    I really love the colour

  47. Debbie says:

My first thought was wow thats just like L’oreal’s resist and shine titanium No 736 from the “blacks” collection – then I read the comment about Lancome being a L’oreal company and I wondered just how different these two were, will be doing some investigative work this weekend if the Lancome polish is out in the UK already. But if you cant get the Lancome in the States the L’oreal 736 would be well worth a look.

    • Debbie says:

Update. Just spotted this on the Lancome counter in Huddersfield and luckily was wearing the L’oreal 736, so peeled off a nail – in the interest of research you understand! – and had a swipe of the Lancome. Literally nothing in it shade wise, exact dupe, guessing brush and application of the Lancome are much better though. Hope this helps!

  48. Tiffany says:

Very pretty. Europe got quite a bit more in that collection that didn’t make it over here…sigh. Oh well.

  49. Valerie says:

I don’t really understand why you complain about Lanc

    • All Lacquered Up says:

Because Valerie, I would like it to be available to everyone. I’m fortunate that Lancome was able to send me a bottle and one to give away but I’d LOVE for everyone who wants a bottle to be able to buy one.

  50. Janet says:

Oh. My. God. that is a beautiful shade!!

  51. TygerKitty says:

Oh gosh, I used to own mystic peacock – that was such a gorgeous color! I don’t know why I ever got rid of it *stupid*! This is sooooooooooooo pretty, I love how many different shades it takes on in the various light, wow!

  52. rmcandlelight says:

It is such a lovely green. It looks like it has the right amount of shimmer. Too bad we can get it in the US :( I would love to have this polish in my collection :D

  53. donna says:

damn! whats wrong with them? i have every green you have reviewed and that one takes the cake! WHY?

  54. AJ says:

I am totally with you on the Nailslicks thing. They had a couple of colors I adored and now lack.

As for Pop Petrol, that is one amazing color. I own a ton of blues and greens and in-betweens and I have nothing close to that deep, dark tealy green. Definitely one to lust over.

  55. Olga says:

It would be intersting to see a comparison with Misa Toxic Seduction

  56. Suzanne says:

Looks good.. it’s so expensive though. Like

  57. kelly says:

It is gorgeous. Greens are my absolute favorite and even if I have a similar color I still feel compelled to get the new one anyway. I am bummed about these exclusives, first the sally hansen project runway collection and now this one:(

  58. Beautiful color! I like how it has a little shimmer in it as well:-)

  59. kemmie3 says:

Wow! such I pretty color, I am starting to like greens more and more, enter me please!

  60. HT says:

Ugh, I know… there are actually a few other items that aren’t being released in the US. Noooo!!! Why??? Totally stinks.

  61. Jackie S. says:

This color is so beautiful its SICK…I love it! I really need to find a European nail-pal!

  62. Sarah says:

I need that color! It is so pretty. I remember Mystic Peacock, and the other great fairy tale jewel tones Cover Girl had. And I remember the commercials with Brandy. Sigh.

  63. grace says:

Bummer it won’t be released in the US. It reminds me of Wet n Wild Morbid – might be a pretty close (and super affordable) dupe. I picked it up on a whim, having not purchased a bottle of cheapie drug store polish since middle school, but I was really impressed by the formula and the wear.

  64. I so would have gone right out to buy this if it was released in the US. But I’m not buying anything from Lancome’s O My Rose collection, it’s pretty boring.
I’m going to Ireland next month, so maybe I can find this there *fingers crossed*

  65. Rachel says:

    Gorgeous… I’d love this polish!

  66. mix says:

This is absolutely gorgeous. It does look like the green cousin of Don’t Tell Mama. I’m a huge collector of blues and greens and all in between. I so wish I could add this to my collection. Keeping my fingers crossed for the giveaway.

  67. Andrea says:

:( Shame on them! The colour looks gorgeous, especially as I’m a fan of the darker and jewel tone shades. Here’s to hoping :)

  68. amy says:

Darn it! So this is an European release only? I guess if they aren’t releasing this colour in the US, then it won’t be coming to Canada either.

  69. ImagineGabriela says:

Beautiful color and love that it is dark color with a pop of green for color! I was able to kinda recreate this look with ChinaGlaze Liquid Leather for base and Emerald Sparkle on top but just 1 coat. xoxo

  70. Alyssa Scott says:

OH MY GOSH I have been talking about Teal all month and now I see this!!!! I need this to make my spring fantastic! Thank you for showing me this!

  71. Mich says:

Oh wow that’s such a pretty color!

Would you know by any chance how this one compares to Misa’s Toxic Seduction? It looks kinda like it, maybe more muted.

    Keep up the good work!

    • All Lacquered Up says:

I looked at it vs. Toxic Seduction and there was no comparison to my eye. They are totally different. Especially because T.S. is so much more shimmery

  72. Netzilla says:

It’s so pretty and I’m so sad that it won’t be released in the US:( NO FAIR!!

  73. kelsea says:

I love this color! Wow, it looks like your fingers are encrusted with emeralds! =) I would love the get my hands on this.

    Thanks!

  74. Ashura says:

It remnds me to chanel “vert sacrilege”, but maybe a little more pigmented.

  75. Karin says:

I purchased a few bottles in Europe- it is a gorgeous color, but to me it looked a lot more teal than green- the blue really stands out more. Still love it though! With the weak dollar vs, Euro, it ended up costing twice the price of a bottle in the US, and these were purchased directly from Lancome!!

    • Karin says:

I want to revise my earlier post slightly- once dried, the teal faded and it was a gorgeous shade of dark green. I think I was a little too quick to comment!!!

There is another nail color in the Rose collection I picked up that is called sane appeared opaque light gold in the photographs on the Lancome.de site. It is actually a clear polish with lots of small gold glitter. Beautiful polish, but I am sure there are dozens of dupes for this one.

There was lots of items from the European/Canadian collection that were left out of the US release- 3 chubby pencils and teal/green mascara (Virtuose I think). For some reason, Lancome.de had many items listed as “store only,” so I could not pick that up. Seems so unfair! I live 15 miles from Canada, so maybe worth a trip over…..

  76. CC says:

I wrote Lancome and asked if the Europe division would be willing to ship Pop Petrol to the US. I was told a resounding “No.” Who in the heck do they think they are? Serge Lutens? (That’s another story for another time…)

  77. diann says:

While it is a gorgeous color, I think I will have t make do with my lippmann Don’t Tell Mama..

  78. Betty says:

    Truly fantastic shade.

  79. I am wondering if you have ever written or showed photos of how you store all of your wonderful polish collection. I am trying to organize my very small collection, and am having trouble trying to figure out if I should lay them on their sides so I can see the actual color, or have them sit upright, and then have to go through them all to find the right one…I would appreciate any help or advice you might share. Thank you for your time and trouble. Michaele Thunen
