OPI Alice In Wonderland Collection Swatches & Review
After last winter’s TV show themed 90210 collection, OPI has entered the entertainment realm again with the launch of an Alice in Wonderland collection inspired by the upcoming Disney flick, directed by the brilliant Tim Burton. OPI’s knack for clever polish names makes this collaboration a perfect fit for such a whimsical story.
The collection includes limited edition polishes Absolutely Alice, Mad as a Hatter, Off With Her Red! and Thanks So Muchness! in shades of red, blue and a multi-colored glitter that made me say “WOW!” Check them out after the jump! |
Ever since images started popping up on the internet, I’ve been curious which makeup brands would launch collections based on the movie. I mean, Anne Hathaway could sell boatloads of red lipstick with this promo image alone. And have you seen Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen? Her fiery red locks would make Magenta from Rocky Horror jealous. When is an accompanying at-home color coming out?
So I have to say I was a bit surprised that OPI created two red polishes rather than a white for this collection. Wouldn’t a white with red glitter (maybe even tiny heart shaped glitter) look amazing? Yes that’s a bit childish but you must admit it would be fun and Alice In Wonderland deserves some fun. Though to OPI’s credit, there is plenty of fun in the two glitters they did include. You may have picked up on my love/hate relationship with glitters in the past. If they’re truly unique I’m in love but I HATE removing them. Like it’s worse than the tingles I get from the thought of wet wool mittens. BLECH! Unfortunately there are no short cuts where glitter removal is concerned. It’s all about patience and soaking the polish with acetone remover BUT the glitters in this collection are totally worth the pain. |
Absolutely Alice did absolutely nothing for me in the collection promo pics but on the nail, WATCH OUT!! Mingling amongst the eye catching royal blue glitter are pops of gold, the color of Alice’s blonde locks. It adds a whole new dimension to what would otherwise be just another blue glitter. It’s truly dazzling although because this is just a whole mess of glitter suspended in a clear base, you need three coats to achieve opacity and at least one thick layer of Seche Vite to avoid a grainy finish.
I tried very hard to show you the actual color but these images are still a little off. I went looking for a similar base shade in another polish for reference and the closest I can find is Color Club Sexy Siren glitter though Absolutely Alice is a touch deeper and more blue.
Mad As A Hatter is one big confetti party encapsulated in polish. Think Lippmann’s Happy Birthday but with smaller, round micro-glitter. As I roll my nails in the light, I see a rainbow of colors that come together to make me think of New Year’s Eve. In fact as I was staring, mesmerized by the effect, all I could think was how I HAVE to wear this on NYE next week. What impressed me is the density of the glitter. With three coats I had no bald spots.
I took this photo under artificial light hoping to capture even a hint of its sparkle factor but this is definitely one color that benefits from being seen in person.
Thanks So Muchness! is a berry red metallic shimmer. As you apply it, you can see those telltale lines that indicate the shimmer is pearlized. Though flecks of red micro-glitter that are randomly dispersed throughout the polish, hide that from the casual observer. The formula is smooth and well pigmented requiring a standard two coat application.
Off With Her Red! is a tomato red creme. It applies well and is completely opaque, achieving bottle color in two coats, but it doesn’t stand out. I get that red is an integral part of the Alice in Wonderland color story but I personally feel this one is a throwaway. It’s a fine color and all but I would rather see something based on the Cheshire Cat or Caterpillar.
OPI’s Alice In Wonderland collection launches in January. The polishes retail for $8.50/ea and can be purchased at professional salons nationwide including Ulta, Regis, Trade Secret, JC Penny, Beauty Brand, Beauty First and of course certain e-tailers will have the line as well.
Is anyone else geeked up for the release of Alice In Wonderland in March?? With Tim Burton putting his twist on the classic tale, I know it will be a hit. Which of these AIW polishes will you be rushing out to buy?

Such a tease this post! I was ready to buy Thanks so Muchness as soon as I got out of work today…only to find that the collection isn’t out yet!
I know this has nothing to do with what is posted, but I am unsure how to find anything out or where to go to look for what I need. Years ago, my mother bought me two french manicure sets. One was pastel blue and the other pastel green. I absolutely looooooooved them. I can’t for the life of me think of where she got them. She has a worse memory than me. Is there anyone that can HELP me. This is driving me crazy, and I would really like to find somemore. I know I can just take different shades and do my own, but I know it won’t come out like the ones I had before.

i typically hate removing these glitters too…but the blue one just came off my nail. in a huge chunk. i now have 10 little blue nail polish pieces that are shaped just like my nails. and i didn’t bite on them or anything, they just lifted off! the blue has a different brush than the mad as a hatter, too. mad is a thicker brush. hmm.
The same bloody thing happened to me yesterday! WTF? Is it my base coat or the polish itself?
Same thing happened to me. Also with the Mad as a Hatter color. Any suggestions to stop this happening.
Same thing happened to me as well. I used Orly Bonder & Seche Vite…Absolutely Alice is a beautiful color, but is worthless to me unless I can figure out how to stop it from chipping within hours of application.

Oh I love this post – thanks for the review of the colours. I absolutely agree with your point about the blandness of Off With Her Red in this collection. I so wish they had come up with something akin to your idea of white glitter with red hearts – I would *definitely* have purchased that!

Okay ladies so first of all I will admit to being a guy lol. There phew done and over with. I started polishing them about two years ago and I kind of felt it’s hard to stop once you start ? but i don’t know why ? Anyway my fingernails I usually just stick to clear polish, or with a slight tinge of white. Obviously it’s awkward to see a guy with painted nails so I stick to colors that are not easily visible. My feet however are a totally different story, I wear dark colors there. I like blues, purples, browns, greens (tend to stay away from red tried it and doesn’t look too good on a guy).
So I have a technical question for you ladies… I came across a piece of information that there is something called “acryllic white content” in clear nail polish. This is done on a percentage basis for the particular polish. Now my question is, what does this mean ? if the percentage is higher does that mean the clear polish is more visible ?

I just came back from the cinema, I went to see Alice in Wonderland wearing Mad as a Hatter, I needed to say it to someone who could understand!
Thanks for sharing. I’m actually planning to wear Absolutely Alice so I’m glad I’m not the only one wearing polishes from the collection just to see the movie. I wore China Glaze Dorothy Who? to the HD screening of the Wizard Of Oz. I’m such a nail geek, ha!
Lol, nail geek, that’s what I’m gonna call myself from now on…
I don’t think we’re alone in this madness though. Just before going to the movies last night I saw a special on tv: there were girls in line to see the film, wearing a colorful Alice in Wonderland makeup. They said it was copied from the internet or something…I didn’t listen carefully, but I think it could have been the urban decay book of shadows. We aren’t alone in the universe
hi all, i just watch Alice in Wonderland today, and i was given a free bottle of ‘Mad as a hatter’
absolutely loves the color!!
and since it was free, im not allowed the choose the color i want, although i initially wanted red. but i think ‘mad as a hatter’ really more stands out than the 2 reds
I was so disappointed to find that Off With Her Red was extremely similar to Bullish, in fact I could have saved myself the 8 bucks that’s how close they are!
Love the Mad Hatter and Absolutely Alice colors but had the same problem as many others with it just peeling off in one big piece. I tried CND Stickey base and a top coat but it still just peeled off. Can’t get more than a day or two out of it.
I saw these fabulous colors in Flare magazine (Canada) and LOVED them!!! i rushed to my local salon to get them and they were pretty much sold out! they had 2 absolutely alices (which i bought!) and the two reds ( which i was mildly disappointed about because i think one red was enough) and no mad as a hatter
i really liked that one! maybe ebay has some

I finally found 2 bottles of Mad as a Hatter in a spa last weekend (it was in the alice in wonderland display box) I was going to buy it along with thanks so very muchness and they wouldn’t sell it to me! They said it wasn’t for sale yet! It wasn’t the only one-it was in the display box. Anyhow after that disappointment I purchased an overpriced mini set from Amazon. That same day I went to Ulta and found they had Mad as a Hatter back in stock after being out of it for weeks. I read somewhere it was best to dab on the first coat as opposed to brushing it. I found it better to brush on the first coat. I actually got really good coverage from just 2 coats. I love it. Afraid of how much time it’s going to take to remove it.
