butter LONDON Fall-Winter 09 Swatches & Review

I’ve been champing at the bit to get my hands on butter LONDON‘s British Racing Green ever since I eyed it backstage at Vena Cava during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week last February. A couple months ago we got a peek a the rest of the Fall/Winter collection and now I finally have it in my hot little hands.

A set of five diverse and unique shades, Creative Director Nonie Creme designed this collection to give women colors with personality that punch up the muted tones seen on the runways. Check them out after the jump!

First off, let’s talk about what’s new for Fall 2009; a revamped butter LONDON bottle. Hearing your criticism regarding the hard to remove outer cap, bL has replaced it with an easy glide version. No longer shall we debate whether you’re supposed to polish with the outer cap on or off. The decorative raven printed on the inner cap solves that mystery.

Now on to the polish. The formula with these is on par with a couple noted exceptions. Rosie Lee, being a clear based glitter, required three coats as did Pearly Queen (the frosty white). Unfortunately my travel schedule to NYC limited my time so rather than wait until next week when I return, I did some quick one finger swatches for you.

Of course I had to do a full mani with British Racing Green. How could I resist?? The shade reminds me of a vintage MG convertible only better because of the shimmer. We’re not talking standout sparkle but the shade is so vivid that even in incandescent light I can pick up on it. Hand this polish a prize because it’s a winner!
The name Rosie Lee kind of speaks for itself. A sweet, dazzling rosy pink it becomes foil-like in the sun.
Scoundrel is a medium reddish lilac creme that’s just dark enough for me to avoid “alien hand” syndrome. It’s not bright but it definitely has a kick!
Can you say pumpkin? Minger‘s warm undertones give this nontraditional fall bright a sesonally appropriate feel.
Pearly Queen is my only disappointment in the bunch. It’s plagued with brush stroke issues and the hue just doesn’t work on me. To put up with brush marks I better LOVE the color.
The butter LONDON Fall/Winter 09 collection retails for $14/ea or get the Fashionista’s Favourites Fall 2009 pack and receive all 5 polishes for $45. The collection is on sale now at butterLondon.com and coming soon to Beauty.com.

I like the Scoundrel, looks very very sweet. I usually use only dark nail polish and I have some dark purples (my favorite Cassis from Peggy Sage) but this lila is too sweet not to be tried out.

  2. midwestgrrl says:

Yay! I pre-ordered BRG. Now I wish I'd added Minger and Scoundrel, too!

  3. Gina says:

oh, how I wish greens worked on my brown skin! BRG looks wonderful, and RL is what I was hoping for when I bought NARS arabesque.

  4. Regine says:

Oh Michelle. You've created a lemming. I really NEED BRG. Pity Butter London does not ship to Norway. Argggghhhh!:(

Hey, it looks like they also upped the size of the bottle as well. They're now .4 as opposed to .3 It seems like dark greens are the new trend for nails, much like black was a few years ago. Would you please so some comparison picks of diffrent ones?

I love these and can't wait til mine arrive. I ordered the Spring polishes and was very happy with them. I have a lot of Butter London and don't get the negativity about this brand.

  11. Solveig says:

I think Rosie Lee is really cute. :)

  12. Samantha says:

    I loved them all!

  13. Jaime M. says:

Oh British Racing Green, you speak to the childhood nostalgia in me. My father had a vintage Jaguar in that color and now, I have to buy you… if only for the memories. Clever. Very clever.

  14. Lucy says:

British Racing Green is an amazing looking shade. I really want this one. I also like Minger. I've never used this brand before. I thought it was a litle high priced for such a little bottle. I just may have to order these two.

I was in Sea-Tac yesterday and I picked up BRG, Minger, and one called Henley Regatta (a 2/3 blue, 1/3 green glitter; looks beautiful over BRG also) and I think I am in love. One problem, I now want the other colors I saw (who doesnt want a polish called The Full Monty?) and I live in Canada.Do they ship?

  16. Ashley says:

you swatch for minger doesnt seen right to me. it dries to quite a bright orange, whereas that seems more orange/yellow in the swatch, less vibrant then it is in reality. it is a very solid bright orange which i am in love with none the less.

  17. starlight says:

Some of these polishes don’t look very fall to me. The only one that looks like fall is BRG, however, they are all very pretty!

  18. Diane says:

I was actually fortunate enough to stumble across an old MG while wearing BRG the other day, and I couldn’t resist snapping a photo. I remembered that you’d made the comparison here so I thought you might be interested to see it :)

I’m wearing Scoundrel right now! I love me some BUTTER London. I have to disagree about Pearly Queen though. The color is silvery enough that the brush marks (I’m not saying they aren’t there!) make it look like brushed metal, which adds another dimension to the polish. I don’t know if it’s just my monitor, but the picture makes it look very white when it’s actually more of a light, lustrous grey. It’s one of my favorite colors.

Hi! I am fairly new to your blog but I was recently flipping through your arcives and stumbled upon this post. OMG I am so in love with BRG and Mingle. My heart almost broke when I saw that this is from 2009 and I just knew that these wouldn’t be available anymore. However clicked on the link and they are still for sale on the website! SO happy, even though I just spent almost 40 bucks on 2 nail lacquers. I don’t even care! Thanks so much!

I NEED Butter London’s polishes now!
I know it has the sparkle going on but is racing green a similar shade of deep green as Essie’s going incognito?
It’s impossible to get my hands on Butter London in Singapore and I’m dying just looking at all the swatches!

Jo, it’s possible now. ButterLondon is selling on a Singapore online store http://www.naturelova.com. I saw it at Takashimaya too, at basement one. Seems like Butter London seem to be penetrating into our little island! I’m excited to get Artful Dodger and Dosh colours. The base and quick dry top coat is great too. Good luck!
