OPI Spain (aka Coleccion de España) – Primera Parte

By on August 24, 2009
in Berry, Fall 2009, Gray, Green, Nude, OPI, Red, Vampy

Doesn’t “primera parte” sound much more interesting than “part one”? Ah the beauty of the Spanish language. OPI is transporting us to Spain for their fall color story and after reading your numerous pleas and comments, I have swatches of the collection for you.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been chomping at the bit to review OPI Spain. It’s not that the colors aren’t pretty or well made, it’s just that, with a few notable exceptions, they don’t give me a thrill. Normally I pass on a collection if I’m not “in like” with a majority of the shades but I couldn’t ignore the overwhelming number of you wanting to see these colors. Check them out!

With six polishes in the berry family I chose to start with the more diverse and unique shades from the collection. Now while I’ve applauded OPI’s formula over the past year I noticed that the pigmentation with most of these are off. Even a polish as dark as Here Today… Aragon Tomorrow required three coats.

Here Today… Aragon Tomorrow is a blackened forest green. This is the season of dark green and I’m sure this color will be an instant hit. Consider this the green LPAD. I’m sure it will have that same kind of fan base. What I found odd was the grainy texture of the formula. It’s visible in the first and second coats but disappeared by coat three. If I had to compare it, Zoya Envy would be its closest relative though Envy has a brighter, less blackened base.

Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees really surprised me. I was expecting it to look black when dried but it’s actually a stunning bluish charcoal creme. I tried to find something similar in my collection but came up short. If you’re looking for “the new black” try this!

Give Me Moor! is a rich aubergine creme. It looks like there is shimmer in the bottle but it dries creamy on the nail. It’s pretty and vampy but feels recycled. Like Black Cherry Chutney redux.

Can You Tapas This? is best described by OPI as “raisin” and I won’t try to top that. This is another one that surprised me. It looks very understated in the bottle but pretty scrumptious on the nail. This color is so outside of my wheelhouse but I’m diggin it.

Bullish On OPI has a slightly browned appearance in person but it just didn’t translate in pictures. It’s definitely better than your typical cherry red creme. It feels a bit vintage a la Dita Von Teese. If you’re into reds I suggest checking this one out in person.

Barefoot in Barcelona
is deeper than your typical nude. It’s darker and more pink than last fall’s Tickle My France-y? Think of it as the cool toned version of CND Cocoa which is very yellow based. Deep nudes and mushroom hues have been popping up on celebrity toes and this shade would fit right in with the trend.
The OPI Coleccion de España is on shelves now and retails for $8.50/ea. Look for OPI at fine salons nationwide including chains like ULTA, Beauty First, Beauty Brands, Trade Secret and JCPenney.

What are we feeling about OPI Spain so far? Have you picked any of them up yet? Which ones are going on your shopping list? Sound off Fanatics!

I actually bought Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow after seeing the swatches on another blog, but I didn't like it so much on myself. I agree that it is grainy, and in most lights it just looks like a boring black. However, I really love Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees! I am definitely getting this one!

I preordered 6 of the shades off of eBay back in June. I've been wearing Pampalona Purple non stop since I got it in the beginning of the month. It doesn't strike me as a fall shade. However, I love the dark green. I'm waiting until it really is fall before I start wearing that one. :)

  3. Monique R. says:

I honestly think it's the best collection OPI has done in awhile…probably since France last year.

I'm surprised you aren't into this collection the colors are definitely odd-ball for OPI.

I picked up the Here Today… Aragon Tomorrow, Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees, Barefoot in Barcelona, and Pamplona Purple. Can't wait for part two!

  4. Laura Carson Miller says:

I love the Barefoot in Barcelona shade.

  5. Tavia says:

They all look awesome, but I specially the one in aubergine color. I like cause they look so shiny on nails without applying after some shine lacquer.

  6. The Glitterati says:

I'm undecided on Suzy Skies in the Pyrenees… it sounds so cool, but looks either awesome, or too black, depending on whose swatch I'm looking at (yours is in the awesome camp!). But who are we kidding, I'll probably cave soon.

The surprise hit for me was the Manicurist of Seville. Just another boring berry I suppose, but it just looked so rich and fall-ish and yummy. I want it! (your

Suzi Skis the Pyrenees is my favorite of the lot. I know the mostly creme finishes bum people out but it makes me very happy :)

  8. Amy says:

A yawn for me…but then I'm not exactly the biggest OPI fan.

  9. Duffi McDermott says:

I'm with Amy. This is pretty meh for me.

I've been waiting for you to review this!

I first saw swatches of this collection on the Vampy Varnish blog (which has disappeared, because I can't seem to find it), and I thought the entire collection was lovely.
Of the photos on that blog, Give Me Moor! was the one that caught my eye. I liked it so much in person that I actually bought a backup (and that's rare for me when it comes to nail polish).

I wouldn't say that it's EXACTLY like Black Cherry Chutney. To me, it seems like a deep wine color, whereas Black Cherry Chutney seemed more like a deep grape/cherry color.

The only polish that I got from this collection was Here Today Aragon Tomorrow. I am sick of the berry cremes, and the dark colors in this collection were really intriguing to say the least!

    Hi Michelle:

I absolutely love this collection. I have seen it advertised in magazine ads but never paid much attention to it until now. Every polish color looks so dazzling and gorgeous on your nails. Your nails just seem to sparkle and dance of the page with such gloss their just amazing. I Love "Here Today…Aragon Tomorrow, and Barefoot in Barcelona is such a pretty nude color shade. The red "Bullish on OPI looks dazzling and bright red. My favorite is "Can Your Tapas This? Raisin must be my favorite color shade. I love this as well as Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees and Give Me Moor. Fabulous Colors! I can't wait for Part Two!

    (((((Love Michelle)))))

  13. Fressine says:

I feel exactly the same as you about this collection.
I'm not really thrilled as most of the colors are so "common" that it seems that OPI picked a selection of their existing colors to put them into a "new" collection.
But if I really "had" to choose one of them, I will probably take Barefoot in Barcelona and Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow….and maybe Suzi skis in the Pyrenees as well ;-)

  14. Regine says:

Well, I've already got HTAT (2 bottles, I couldn't pass, that was the green I was looking for!), Suzi skis in the pyrenees (2 bottles of this one two), Give me moor and Pamplona purple.

I thought of getting Can you tapas, but it didn't look very nice in many swatches. But yours Michelle…I am gonna get it just because of your swatch!

I'll get No Spain no gain too, I think.

  15. skgoh says:

I was very disappointed with Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow. It looked practically black. No one knew it was green except me. Everyone else thought I was wearing black polish. Boo. I want a dark green creme that looks like a dark green creme. I hope I get better luck with the new Orly Enchanted Forest. Picking it up tomorrow!

  16. beautyjudy says:

I really liked the darks in this collection and I ended up getting all of them but two – Bullish on OPI (seemed too much like Orly's Poison Apple to me) and Pink Flamenco.
I think Suzi is my favorite from this collection.

  17. Erin says:

I really want Here Today Aragon Tomorrow. Even though what I really want is a dark green and this looks black. I'm trying to tell myself I'll be disappointed with it, but part of me keeps wanting it anyway.

  18. Stephanie says:

I'm so torn on Barefoot in Barcelona. I love nude shades, but when I saw Scrangie's swatch of in it just didn't pull me in. Yours does though. What's a girl to do? I did pick up Here Today…and Suzi Skis. I couldn't resist those two. I haven't tried them yet, though. Like one of the other commenters I also noticed that Vampy Varnish disappeared. Where'd it go? :(

  19. Solveig says:

I have to agree with Amy and Duffi. None of these colors "speak" to me, but I'm rarely impressed by cremes anyway.

  20. Denette says:

I really like this collection! I LOVE red, pink, and berry creams so this collex is right up my alley. I have Pamplona Purple, Ate Berries and Manicurist of Seville and I love them all. I am still panning to get No Spain and Suzi Skis! Thanks so much for swatching this collection for us! I can't wait to see part 2!

  21. Shojo Flash says:

I'm wearing Here Today… Aragon Tomorrow right now and I put on three thinner coats and you're right, its lovely green almost disappears. Next time I think I'll try two thicker coats. Same with Can You Tapas This.

I also picked up Suzi Skis and Give Me Moor.

  22. L says:

I bough suzi skis, here today aragorn tomorrow and manicurist of seville. i was actually kinda disappointed by suzi skis, in your swatches it has the blueish tinge i want mine to have that somehow doesn't show up. it just looks like a greyed black on my nails, even with two thick coats or with three thin ones.
i found here today aragorn tomorrow to be ever so slightly too dark, but its still a gorgeous shade.

  23. Kate says:

I have to agree on Suzi Skis…I thought it was going to be another almost-black but it's definitely not. I got a pedi in it this weekend, and it's stunning. It also looks awesome with the leopard-print peep toes I've been wearing this week. Love it. Haven't tried any others, but this one's definitely a winner.

I have three words for the Coleccion de Espana:
    No me gusta.
But I'd love to see Suzi Skis on a guy.

  25. Jen says:

Love this collection, but it's not the reason I'm commenting for the first time! I just wanted to say congrats on your GORGEOUS Mismas polish being in the September issue of Allure. Such a beautiful colour! It's absolutely a must-have for me!

  26. Penny Lane says:

Any tips on where to buy this online? 8ty8beauty nor Head2Toe have it at this point.

  27. Tiffanie says:

I purchased Suzi Skis and Here Today a few weeks ago. I'm applying Suzi Skis right now on my toes and it is horribly thin for such a dark color. Also, the wide brush is not so good on my teenie tiny little toe nails. I just ordered another color online and I'm already regretting it due to the application problems. Next time I need a blue/grey/black fix I"m going back to the best one… Laura Mercier Caviar Dreams. It is so fabulous I might even buy a back up bottle if I can find one online.

  28. Anonymous says:

Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees looks an awful lot like Light My Sapphire without the shimmer, and Aragon is really cool. As a guy, I'd wear both, they're really versatile.

  29. Coco says:

Thanks for the great review and pictures. But when is Part 2 coming? I am about to order Manicurist of Seville online but want to read your review first since it looks oddly similar to Miami Beet to me in the few pictures on the web.

  30. Anonymous says:

I specifically went out today and bought Bullish because of your review. I LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT! It's the perfect red nail polish and I'm so happy with it :D

  31. Anonymous says:

I got Suzy, Pamplona Purple, Aragon Tomorrow and Barefoot in Barcelona from discountbeautycenter.com. They're $6.79 a piece there, which isn't the best deal but if you spend $55 you get free shipping (ergh, which I did, only on polish… am I crazy?)

  32. Susan says:

Have to agree with others on Here Today, Aragon Tomorrow. I loved the pics in the post, but after 3 coats, I ended up with what looks like black. I'm either going to try two heavy coats or try to lighten it with something. Rather disappointing.

  33. Anonymous says:

I received Suzi Skis In The Pyrenees as a gift and it just looks black – disappointed. I wanted it to be more of a dark grey.

  34. La Lionne says:

I am in love! Gorgeous colours!
