Jin Soon for MAC Nail Trend FW09

The launch date is upon us Fanatics. The MAC Nail Trend collection created by Jin Soon is launching next week! When I first wrote about the polishes in July, August 27th seemed like forever and a day away. Seriously, where did the summer go? Well, if you’re mourning the end of the season you can rejoice in the coming of Nail Trend. I’ve got the entire collection swatched for you after the jump and in case you missed it, click here for more details on the collection.

We’ve discussed MAC’s formula in the past but here’s a quick recap. MAC polishes are 3 Free and tend to be somewhat thick. Their cremes are generally streaky but the darker shades are workable and the glitters are phenom (Hello Vin Goth I’m talking to you!). I tend to use three coats with the majority of their polishes to avoid streaks and my preferred method is two very thin coats followed by a third thicker coat.

What I noted this time that I’ve meant to mention in the past is my love for the MAC polish brush. There’s something about the density and size of their brush that makes controlling the polish practically goof proof. I rarely can create that perfect rounded line of color at my cuticle but it’s always pretty darn close with MAC’s brush. Now onto the colors.

In my previous Nail Trend post I mentioned our (Jin & I) mutual love of green so seeing Beyond Jealous backstage at Doo.Ri wasn’t a huge surprise, more an utter joy! There are not enough greens for this fanatic and while there may be some close dupes to this blackened teal, I still got giddy applying it. As I told my pal Heather from MAC, Beyond Jealous is Beyond Stunning!
Cool Reserve is a shade the piqued my interest based on description alone. Dirty, grey lavender… you’re talking my language. It’s a lighter more greyed version of my fave from last fall, OPI Parlez Vous OPI?
Rich, Dark, Delicious reminds me of an old Special Dark bar. Random I know but you get what I mean, right? When you find an old candy bar and there’s a layer of dusty whiteness on top. This rich brown has an undertone of charcoal to give a hint of that effect. And even though you can see a bit of silvery shimmer in the bottle, it dries creamy on the nail. You’d have to be looking in some pretty bright light to see it.
I reviewed the next three colors previously but I’m re-posting my thoughts for you here.

Dry Martini is a deep olive that leans towards brown, like a dark army camouflage green. It’s edgy and funky and a nice change from the more emerald/forest shades we’ve seen in seasons past. In case you’re wondering, and I’m sure you are, it’s much darker and more browned than last fall’s RBL No More War.

For Fun is just that, a spunky, bright red-grape. It’s a bit more red based looking in person but I just couldn’t capture it dead on.

Dance All Night’s brick red hue reminds me of one of my all time fave OPI reds, That’s An “EL” Of A Color, minus the golden shimmer. It’s rich, warm and very fall.
The MAC Nail Trend collection by Jin Soon launches in stores on August 27th. It should be online at MACCosmetics.com on Tuesday the 25th as they tend to launch online a couple days early. The polishes retail for $12/ea.

So spill… who’s buying? Which colors? What do you think of MAC polishes? Do you have any LE shades you wish they’d bring back? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm so glad to see these dark, black-greens. It's nice when your mind is being read!

  2. Nora says:

OMG I'm in love with Beyond Jealous! Must have. :)

"That's An "EL" Of A Color, minus the golden shimmer"
There is a reason I'm a faithful reader of your blog and it's comments like this that solidify it. You speak my nail and color language. I know exactly what color that is and I've been searching for something creme that color forever.
    Thank you!

I've already called my MAC store and they said they will be available next Thursday.

  3. The Hollywood Memoirs says:

Beautiful shades! Will you do a comparison between MAC's Beyond Jealous and Zoya's Envy? I just purchased the later and they look very similiar. Thanks so much!

  4. Pinkginger says:

I want every single one! Stunning!

  5. Anonymous says:

I'm relieved to say I don't like any of those.
    My wallet is glad too…

  6. Breezy says:

I am loving these. The purple reminds me of the new one in the OPI Espana collection. The green does too a little, but this one seems to be a slightly lighter, more obvious green green. Would look awesome with some matte top coat too! :)

  7. Delfina says:

    Hi,
first time commenter but regular reader.
These look fantastic but I asked last week at a Mac counter here in Milan and they told me the collection is not coming to Italy. I was wondering whether it's a U.S. exclusive or if I could buy it on the U.K. website. Do you know anything about?

  8. Nat says:

What do I think of Mac polishes? Those I've tried are great. I don't understand the bad fuss against them. To say the truth, I own only one Mac polish but it's really excellent. I'm talking about 'Asiatique', the red from the Dame Edna collection. It's not streaky at all, it litterally applies like butter and it's fully opaque in only one coat. Possibly the polish I wear the most both because it's a true pleasure to apply it and the color might be boringly classic, it remains really beautiful and sexy (I'm a red lover). I also tried 'Vintage Vamp' at my Mac counter and it applied wonderfully, non streaky and was perfect in 2 coats. It stayed 5 days without a chip on my nails before I decided to remove it. Then, I don't know. Maybe did I tried good numbers and all the rest suck? I'd be lucky!

Concerning this collection, I find it very pretty. I'll have to check 'Rich, Dark, Delicious'. I love the cold tone it has on your pic. I don't like too orange brown so it might be perfect to me. The greens are great but green makes my hand's skin look awfully ugly so I'll skip. Same for grape and grey/lilac colors which makes me look like I am dead. :)

  9. Amy says:

Interesting colors! I was literally just reading the September issue of InStyle and they have Beyond Jealous and Dance All Night featured. I must admit I've never had MAC polish (though I love their other stuff). That lavender-y taupe reminds me of another OPI I had years ago, but I can't for the life of me think what it's called…

  10. Nat says:

    @ Delfina

I don't think it's USA exclusive. I'm in France and my MUA told me last week that 'a collection 6 shades of nail polishes would arrive quite soon' so I suppose that the collection will be available in some countries within Europe. Hopefully, you can order in the UK website! :)

  11. Sanna says:

Oh, this looks like an awesome collection from MAC. Loves them!

  12. Tavia says:

Love them all. They look just awesome, or maybe only on your nails. I even like cause they are not too long and the shape is just perfect.

  13. makeupmag says:

Thank you so much for this post! I might get that blackened green but the one I *really* like is Rich, Dark & Delicious. Thanks for the heads-up on this!

  17. beautyjudy says:

Thanks! I like Rich Dark Delicious and Dry Martini (I think was the name!) I've never tried MAC polishes, I need to get on that!

  18. Anonymous says:

Will I be able to get these in the UK?

  19. Makeup For Life says:

OMG these are stunning! <3 the Beyond Jealous on you Michelle!

  20. Monique R. says:

    Nobody does color like MAC!!!

Are you going to review the OPI Espana collex?

  21. Angel says:

I can't wait…. I been creating the buzz in my little spa. I asked my insider Mac connect to call me as soon as the get to the store. Now I wonder if I can get my hands on a poster or some sort of signage to draw more attention to having the colors.

  22. Bottles of Lacquer says:

They are now on being sold on mac cosmetics.com. I just placed my order for dry martini and beyond jealous!

  23. Michelle. says:

I presaled Beyond Jealous and Dry Martini today — SO EXCITED to get them and see them on my nail :-)

  24. engly says:

Just picked up a bottle of Dry Martini yesterday because of your amazing swatch. But the actual thing is a LOT darker and it's impossible to tell whether or not it's green or brown, so I was kind of disappointed… I really want it to be the swatch color, dark-ish, but olive green. On the plus side, the formula is pretty good!

  25. stubby says:

I got BJ and DM yesterday. I just painted my nails with DM. I love it but must agree with the previous poster, it does not look as olive green as your swatch. I still love the color and I'm actually considering a back up. I have a feeling this is going to be the hottest seller in the collection.

  26. Megan Squires Design says:

I got a bottle of Beyond Jealous the day they came out and went home and put it on right away. I have been wearing it for three days now and the formula, although thick, seems pretty good. However, it dries black. I don't mind black nail polish so I just kept it on, but after 2 coats and letting it dry all the way, there's not one hint of green at all.

  27. Anonymous says:

I just saw these in the store, and some of the colors look MUCH better online! Great in person: Cool Reserve, Rich Dark, Dance All Night, Beyond Jealous. For Fun is Barney-the-dinosaur purple. Dry Martini, which I desperately wanted to like, is — forgive me — the exact color of baby caca. Seriously. The salesgirl agreed and said she hadn't met anyone yet that it looked good on! Really ugly, even though the pictures make it look so good.

  28. Nora says:

Unfortunately, ITA with Megan on Beyond Jealous.
I'm on my second day wearing it and it just looks black on me (inside, outside, sun & shade). I used two medium coats and Seche on top and I've got nothing but darkness; you can't see any teal or green.
I thought it was just me because I'm so pale and have black hair, but alas no. I guess it will just be my "black" for the season.

Not all is lost though, as I love Dance all night. :)

  29. All Lacquered Up says:

I apologize to those of you who feel like my swatch of Dry Martini is off. I do the best I can with my images but I'm not infallible. My images look correct on my monitor in the light I work in but I can't account for different monitor calibrations, lighting and even our own differences in vision. I'm sorry if you bought Dry Martini and are disappointed. Perhaps my sample bottle is slightly different than the one that went to market.

  30. engly says:

o no! We (at least me) don't mean to bash your swatches! I love your swatches and i often (ok almost always) buy polishes according to your swatches and I know it all depends on the lighting, monitor, camera you use, or even how you optimize your images to upload lol. I'm fully aware it's always going to be different, I just wish the actual thing is as beautiful as your swatch, that's all. Plus MAC return is a breeze, that's never a worry. But that being said, Dirty Martini does look like your swatch under direct sunlight, but in door it looks brown/gray. so wear it to a picnic for the fabulous olive green!:D

again i apologize if you feel like we're not happy with your swatches, it's really quite the opposite of how I really feel!

  31. All Lacquered Up says:

Engly – Thank you, I really appreciate that. I didn't feel like anyone was bashing me, it's just that my worst fear is having a reader buy something based on my image and then be disappointed. I never want to cause anyone to waste money based on my swatches.

  32. engly says:

ha, understandable! All-Lacquered-Up is actually my favorite nail polish blog (ok never leaving comments on other blogs w/ actual name), and because of All-Lacquered-Up I grew my nail polish collection from 2 to 62. no joke. Just wanted you to keep up the awesome work and not be discouraged in anyway! (tho sometimes that's inevitable, but one can only try right?)

  33. loungie says:

when I got to the store the day the polishes were released (actually I was there in the morning) 2 of them were already "sold out"! read the story on my blog.

plus: beyond jealous is a dark room dupe ;-)

  34. Euridice says:

I got all 6 polishes, and I am loving them so far.I too am disappointed that the Dry Martini is not exactly the way your picture appears on my monitor, but I tried it on in the store to determine more what it was really like. I didn't buy based on the pic. Perhaps getting a color closer to your pic will become my holy grail!! :-)

  35. Sel says:

I got myself a bottle of For Fun today. My first MAC nail polish! I’m so happy!
