Coming Soon – OPI Matte Collection

Get ready glossy nail lovers, for it looks like matte is the emerging trend for fall. When OPI is on board, you know it’s gonna blow up. I bought my matte top coat (Orly) back when I saw CND buffing a matte finish on nails at NYFW and now more and more companies are catching on to the trend. Set to launch in July, the OPI Matte collection takes six popular existing shades and mattifies them for a unique look.

OPI unveils a new look in nail color – an edgy new matte finish that is daring, trend-setting, head-turning! New OPI Matte features six of OPI’s most in-demand shades in this must-have new look.

“OPI Matte is cutting edge for nails in terms of sophistication and style,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director. “An all-matte nail is fresh, confident, and very fashion runway, and OPI Matte is meant for those moments when you want to make a major fashion statement. OPI Matte does not wear as long as original OPI Nail Lacquer – but its impact is long remembered!”

Suzi also suggests wearing OPI Matte together with the traditional gloss formula of the same OPI color. “You can do a matte nail with a matching gloss tip, or a gloss nail with a matte edge. It’s like mixing different textures of the same color in an outfit.” To maintain the OPI Matte finish, do not use any base coat, top coat, drying drops, or hand lotion when wearing these lacquers.

OPI Matte is available in six iconic OPI shades:

Alpine Snow – A fresh crisp white.

Russian Navy – Wait until you see this deep-sea indigo!

La Paz-itively Hot – A hot pink perfect for when you’re Bo-livia la vida loca.

You Don’t Know Jacques! – If you don’t know how trendy this taupe is!

Lincoln Park After Dark – Where midnight meets purple.

Gargantuan Green Grape – Green kissed by the summer sun.

I REALLY love Suzi’s tip about mixing the textures. It’s a new twist on the funky french. It reminds me of the black on black nails the CND team created to show Kimora Lee Simmons for her Baby Phat show a few seasons back.

I know the MUA girls have been all over matte polishes but will you buy or just mattify the polishes you already own? Since these can’t be worn with a base, top or treatment product I do wonder how they’ll wear. Thoughts?

I am DEFINITELY getting Gargantuan Green Grape. Just because I can’t find it ANYWHERE and want it so bad. And probably the pink as well :)

Also, my verification word was “redic” which is just awesome.

Oi! I don’t know if I can go without hand lotion! If that’s all it takes to destroy the finish of these polishes, well, you can count me out.

  3. crotchfairy says:

I saw the news earlier on nail juice when I woke up at dawn. 6 hours later I’m still revved up about OPI’s mattes. And in my favorite colors too: LPAD and Russian Navy. July’s going to be so awesome thanks to Zoya and OPI. And… whenever that Lippman Marquee Moon comes out. I don’t own You don’t know Jaques yet so this is perfect.

Hell, I might buy them all. Each week I play the “maybe I should buy it then wimp out” game with KO. Not anymore.

  4. firepail says:

    argh!
    I need all of these!
    and the Zoya collection.
    I need them all!

  5. Faith says:

No hand lotion?! My hands will sprout scales! I might buy Alpine Snow and Gargantuan Green Grape.

  6. Stef says:

I won’t be trying this trend. I love a glossy nail, shiny is my friend! Also, no basecoat? My nails would stain badly! This just isn’t a trend that I can get behind.

  7. melsh says:

    no hand lotion? NEVER!

    i like shiny, shiny.

  8. Lani says:

I wonder why they are saying no base coat? I use base with the Man Glaze I have and see no issues. I will try these with a base coat.

Also, I have used lotion with the mattes I have. It kind of makes them a little less matte, but it isn’t like it ruins them or anything. At least not with what I have now.

  9. girl_decorated says:

I suspect they just say to avoid hand lotion because hand lotion will make your tips look greasy (and therefore not matte). It probably doesn’t destroy the polish itself, although it’s clearly less long-lasting so who knows.

Dunno if I’ll be into these, but I love the original Russian Navy and will be curious to see it as a matte.

I was wondering if OPI was going to hop on the matte trend wagon. Good thing they did, I really like the colors that they chose.

I don’t think I will be sporting any of the matte polishes – I LOVE a super shiny mani/pedi!!

  11. Lori says:

I love shinies as well, but I have no problem trying something new. I’m wondering why they’re releasing a whole collection though, when people can just mattify the top for cheap?

Meh, I guess they saw a way to make some more dough and took the opening. heh.

  12. Taffy says:

I would prefer if they made a matte top coat because I don’t want to spend money in buying the same colours twice. If they made a top coat I would buy that for sure.

  13. Xuan-An says:

A matte You Don’t Know Jacques?! Wow, I cannot wait for this!!

  14. SolSister says:

I love the look of matte polish. I just hate that they’re not as durable due to no topcoat to protect them. Will that stop me from wearing them? Of course not! I am especially looking forward to seeing matte Russian Navy and YDKJ. I bet they’ll be stunning.

Quick question: is the Orly Matte topcoat you mentioned also quick dry?

  15. sage1 says:

I have in my stash a matte topcoat made by Shisheido (spell??) from years ago. Betcha they re-release it.

OPI makes a great Nail Envy in matte finish which is great for guy’s manicures.. but I use it when I hafta cut off my nails; it’s a great treatment.. and does last. But it’s true: the matte wears off if you put any polish over it, OR if you use dry drops or lotion. But it’s a startling top coat on any color.

  16. George says:

    Hi Michelle:

I can see using a matte nail for men, I use OPI Matte Nail Envy myself, it’s clear and has no gloss. But I would have a hard time using these mattes without hand or foot lotions, LOL

BTW-Did you see my post of your web blog on MY G Spot?

    (((((huggs)))))

    Love,

    George :)

  17. TheCandyGirl says:

Shojo Flash, you can definately find Gargantuan Green Grape at http://www.transdesign.com, they have lots of seasonal and discontinued colors.

I’m most definatly gonna try these matte polishes, I have all those colors in the regular fomula and might just get all in matte too. Woo Hoo, I can’t wait!!!

I have the Knockout (KO) black matte polish that came out a few months back. It’s one coat, super thick. The first day you wear it, it’s really matte, then gradually gets glossier as the days go on (never up to full gloss though). I use lotion every day and didn’t notice it affect the polish. These OPI’s will probably be pretty similar. That white will be HOT.

  19. Lani says:

Orly’s Matte top coat is NOT quick dry, which is why I don’t use it that often.

I have hear Nubar’s Matte top coat (V for Men) is good, too.

I think putting a Matte top on a color you like also tends to help it last longer – just like a normal top coat. At least, that has been my experience.

Also, Matte top coats really emphasize any imperfection in your polish…so make sure there are no bubbles or nicks!

  20. moonchaii says:

hmmm, I think I’ll have to see these before getting any, so far I prefer the nail finish to be shiny

But I do like blues a lot, so if any, I’d get Russian Navy

  21. Erin says:

I am getting ALLLLLLLLL of these!!!!!
I have 4 of the KO matte polishes, so I am truly a matte addict!!!

  22. Casey says:

I cannot wait to see the new colors in store!! I have been painting a matte topcoat on my nails forever and I’m glad it’s finally catching on.

  23. Sharon says:

So happy to see Matte. I have been a shimmer girl for years but lately find myself looking for Matte and finding very little.

According to InStyle mag, you can use a basecoat as a topcoat – some extra protection without so much glossiness. Not true matte, but might help…
