Moon Manicures at Dior

By on March 13, 2009

The moon manicure is really hitting its stride. Worn for years by MAC Viva Glam Spokesperson Dita Von Teese, the moon mani has been popping up on runways for fall. First at NYFW shows like Thakoon and Ruffian and now in Paris for the Christian Dior R-T-W collection. Get ready to hone your detail skills kids because moon manicures are back in a big way!

Learn how to recreate the look, after the jump!

The technique: Using a thin art brush paint two straight lines from the bottom corners of your nail towards the center. You’re painting the top half of a triangle with your cuticle as the base. In one smooth stroke, round the top of the triangle to create the moon shape. Fill in the upper half of the nail with color and voila! Tip: adjust the size of the moon on smaller nails for a more natural look.

Get the look: Dior Poison Blue

Dior Poison Blue ($20) is currently available only at the Las Vegas Dior Beauty freestanding boutiques. However, if you call (702) 734-1102 they will ship it to you. Normally the boutique offers free shipping with purchases over $100 but as a special treat, if you mention All Lacquered Up when you call, you can enjoy free shipping on any size order.

It may be “in” and trendy, but I personally will be passing on this look-I think it’s ugly. Just not my style. Be to each their own!

  2. The Rotund says:

I am really really loving all of the half-moon manicures that are showing up. I’m going to have to give this a try.

  3. Lynn says:

I agree with the above comment. I think the look is a little tacky. I do not understand the concept behind it. If someone else likes it more power to them. I for one will not be sporting the look.

  4. styrch says:

Question – if I understand your directions clearly, then you don’t paint the moon part at all, correct? Not sure if I like it, but if I try it I want to make sure I’m doing it correctly.

If you pay attention to the opening credits of the movie Watchmen, Sally Jupiter has a sort of moon & French manicure going on with crimson red and silver – it's beutiful!

I like the moon manicures. I saw elsewhere where the moon inside, and the tips were painted one color, and there was a band of color on the inside. Gold and black, Silver and Black, etc, will look nice in this style.

Anon – It’s not a look for everyone. I don’t like the look of most french manis and I know lots of people love them. You gotta wear what you love

The Rotund – If you do, let us know how it worked out for you and what color you used.

Lynn – It’s just a different style, like any type of nail art. It’s definitely different and not for everyone.

Styrch – You absolutely can put another shade underneath. You can put a layer of any shade down first. Just make sure it’s really dry before continuing. I’ve seen a lot of different color combos. A white, cream or beige underneath is pretty typical.

itsV-Money! – Thanks for the image link. Very cool!

Phyrra – Yep, that’s the look they went for at Thakoon. And Dior did that a couple years ago with pastel blue, pink and yellow in the center. I believe that is the original moon manicure look from Paris.

I love this manicure! Though it’s abut tricky to do if you want to do them white. I attempted it afew weeks ago with red and white. The double moon manicure.

A good trick is to use hole punch reinforcers (the little round stickers with the hole in the middle). That is much easier for me than drawing the moon.
I have done this with black and silver and I really liked it.
I used OPI’s Baby It’s Coal Outside and the silver from the Designer Series – can’t remember the name.

Did you know that the moon manicure is a very old trend, when I was a kid elegant women never had their nails fully painted, the moon of the nail was always left unpainted. Iremember my aunt wearing that bright red and I always disliked it, but nowadays it looks much better.

  14. Steph says:

Very differnet indeed. I’m totally going to try this soon! Michelle, have you tried the SH nail art pens. They are super easy to create a half moon :)

  15. Faith says:

I just did a moon manicure with Zoya Indigo … I kind of did a bad job, but I like it. :) I want to try it with red next … or a combo of purple/silver.

  16. candita says:

Not sure how I feel about this for an everyday look, but next week when the NCAA tourney starts, I will DEFINITELY be rocking the orange (China Glaze Orange Marmalade) and blue (OPI Russian Navy) moon manicure! It’ll be a fun change from the alternating orange and blue I’ve been wearing for the Big East tournament all week! :) GO SYRACUSE!!!

  17. silverin says:

To heck with the nails, I want to wear that makeup, just once!

My nails are long and squoval. I don’t know if I have the right length/shape to pull this look off. I really want to try it though. I think it’s classy. We are of like mind about French manicures. I can go for a funky french on tips only. I cry a little inside when I see it on toes. :P

Well, it’s a good thing there are so many styles out there to keep us all entertained. I would love to be able to spot a half moon manicure at the grocery store.
