Deborah Lippmann on Martha Stewart

So I was getting my morning Martha Stewart fix and I was so excited to see Deborah Lippmann as a guest, discussing holiday nail trends and winter manicure maintenance. I’ll admit, I wasn’t the biggest Martha fan but I started listening to her daughter’s talk show on Sirius radio and seeing her through Alexis’ eyes intrigued me. Realizing that she’s not always perfect, just a real person with flaws like the rest of us (except with a ton more money), made me a Martha fan. Knowing that she’s also Deborah Lippmann fan makes me like her even more.

Deborah was wearing fall favorite Pump Up The Jam on her tips, which were appropriately short, while she gave her best tips for keeping up your manicure during the cold winter months. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before but certainly something a LOT of women fail to do.

Use a base coat – Why people skip this step, I have no idea. The oils on your nail will destroy your mani right quick!

Use a top coat – I know a lot of polishes dry shiny but think of it like waxing a car, you’re sealing and protecting the color while giving it shine.

Hydrate your cuticles – What’s the point of having an amazing paint job if the frame (your cuticles) are tore up? Put a mini cuticle oil/balm/cream in every purse you own. Your skin will thank you.

Wear gloves when cleaning – All the chemicals in cleansers are damaging, protect your skin and nails so you don’t end up with leathery hands by the age of 40.

In regards to color trends Deborah talked about dark nails like the color she was wearing, Pump Up The Jam, a dark berry shimmer. She also gave a great tip for punching up your holiday manicure. Those of you who have read my post, Frankenpolish and The Art of Layering are already familiar with layering but I really loved her idea of popping a wash of red over a sparkly silver to give your tips a jelly, candy apple red look.

Of course, I had to try the look for myself. I picked out a couple reds, including Holiday from Deborah’s holiday collection, to test. I layered them all over Fingerpaints Easel Come, Easel Go!, a foil like silver shimmer.
As you can see in the lower “After” image, having silver underneath really upped the glitz factor. With the creme I chose, Rescue Beauty Lounge Chinoise, the effect was subtle with little hints of glitter peeking out like stars. I think because RBL’s cremes are so pigmented (think one coat red), a more sheer creme would give more bling.

Did anyone else catch Deborah’s Martha segment today? What are your favorite holiday layering combos?

i’m a fairly new reader so i hadn’t seen your frankenpolish post and i was totally inspired- i used to mix polishes when i was a teen with my friends, but i haven’t thought of doing that in forever. last night i had put on some chanel blue satin just because i was tired of the festive reds i’ve been wearing for a few weeks and i needed to change it up, but reading about frankepolish and this martha stewart segment i decided to see how the blue satin would look under a bright metallic grass green i bought in the summer. the green was just two grass green, it looked like moldy fingers! but with blue satin under it, its the perfect metallicy oxidized green- and i’m back to festive! LOVE IT!

OMG! I love RBL Chinoise when it’s layered like that. Don’t get me wrong, the color by itself is nice, but it’s no E! Live From the Red Carpet, but when you layer it over the silver shimmer it gives it just enough pop to make people take a second look at your tips.

Right now I’m wearing Sally Hansen Shooting Star and I’ve gotten lots of compliments on it. I wonder if it might have a similar effect if layered with a bright, festive red?

Oh my goodness! The layering looks ultra cool. This is definitely something I am going to have to try over the holidays. Thanks for the great report back on the show. No access to Martha Stewart shows in my neck of the woods :-(

Just wondering what you meant when you said Debbie’s nails were “appropriately short”?

I’ve been layering a lot lately.
    1. Base of Finger Paints Maroon Macaroon with China Glaze Ruby Pumps over the top of it.
    2. Base of Finger Paints Easel Come Easel Go with China Glaze Tinsel over the top.
    3. Base of Finger Paints Butterscotch Cookie with China Glaze Emerald Sparkle on top.
    4. Base of Finger Paints Butterscotch Cookie with China Glaze Golden Enchantment on top.
    5. Base of China Glaze Black Diamond with China Glaze Tinsel on top.
    6. Base of Finger Paints Easel Come Easel go with China Glaze Emerald Sparkle on top.
I’m using base coats and top coats with these combos to help my color stay around longer. Right now I think I love Maroon Macaroon+Ruby Pumps the best, and Butterscotch Cookie + Golden Enchantment and Easel Come Eassel go+Tinsel in second.

Slowly but surely you have caused me to have this crazed lust for Lippman Holiday and Givenchy Purple By Night. I love those two shades! I’m also feeling very tempted to try Pump Up The Jam, seems like such a gorgeous shade. I’m just a little hesitant with Lippman polishes because as cute as they look, I hate those bottles. They’re just hard to use with the cap shape and the stem of the brush just feels a little too short to use with that sort of cap shape. It just feels akward. Isn’t RBL Chinois amazing? Such a beautiful red creme and quite possibly the most perfect one I’ve come across. Have you tried out any of the new Sally Hansen Insta-Dri shades? There’s a great green one! I just saw them the other day and picked up the Jumpin Jade and Uptempo Plum shades.

The ‘Easel Come, Easel Go’ looks similiar to INM’s best selling ‘Silver Northern Lights’, the 45 second dry top coat with holographic shimmer. A comparitive ‘polish test’ of the two polishes would be interesting!

i recently bought HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT by lippman and its ok.So i tried doing the FADE TO BLACK w/ HIT ME over it and it gives it more of a blackish blue tint.

I love that your nails are short. I used to think only long nails were beautiful, and spent a few yrs with acrylics…however, the damage to my nails and the cost and a slowly fading desire to conform to “feminine ideals” led me to give up the acrylics and wear my nails shorter. Now my idea of sexy and attractive IS the shorter, chic nails. Also, I am much more experimentive and daring with color than I was when I wore them long.

    Great blog, I’ll be back!
