Nail Tip Of The Week: Wearing Dark Colors

Welcome to your Nail Tip Of The Week. A new feature I’ll be bringing to you each week. Just a collection of my nail observations, tips and tricks that I hope you all will find useful.

Since dark and vampy polish shades are back in this fall, I thought this was a good place to start.

First of all, before you pull out your fall shades file down your nails. In my opinion, longer lengths look great wearing sheers, neutrals, even brights. They make your hands look elegant. However, with a dark shade like Lippmann Hit Me With Your Best Shot (pictured), anything longer than a few millimeters past your fingertip and you’re entering Elvira territory. Great for Halloween, not so much for everyday wear.

When removing dark colors, it is so easy to end up staining the surrounding skin or ending up with polish stuck under your nails. Which leads to even more staining. My tip:

  • Let your remover soaked pad sit on the polish for a few seconds.
  • Gently rock the pad side to side to completely saturate the polish.
  • Pull the pad in one smooth motion toward your nail edge and DON’T push back.
  • Use a clean piece of cotton or cloth to remove any remains.

those are great tips…i always have a hard time removing dark polish! I also agree that dark nails are best short, otherwise, they can look trashy.

Unfortunately, I think most of the people who need these tips the most — especially the “don’t wear dark polish on long fingernails” one — don’t read this blog! But great tips — especially the ones on removing varnish. Grazie!

Great tip! I am addicted to dark polish right now (currrently sporting Bahama Mama from Essie… love the plums for Fall) and just took off a black from Sally Hansen that wrecked my fingers with polish stain. Had to work hard to get it all off. I’ll try this next time!

What a great idea to have a tip of the week! Thanx for the practical suggestions on removing dark polish. I’m going to try removing in 1 direction – towards the nail tip.

Excellent tips. I definitely think that a “tip of the week” sort of thing would be great, especially for those of us who aren’t too good at applying polish.

I do like having my nails a LITTLE bit long when I wear dark colors, as I think darker hues tend to make short nails a little stubby.

When I remove darker polish from my toenails, my one big toe, the nail is discolored. Like a grey color. I have gone to a podiatrist thinking it was fungus but, he said no. Does anyone know why that happens and only to one toe?
