MAC Fall 2007

I wish I had been able to share these shades with you before they sold out on MAC‘s website. All this moving stuff is slowing me down. I didn’t expect nail lacquers to be the only products from the Smoke Signals and Blue Storm collections to sell out (with the exception of one lipglass). Though considering how gorgeous they are, it’s not overly surprising.

Being the bargain hunter that I am I generally don’t look to MAC for my polish at $10/bottle but, I can’t resist a pretty color. Which is why I covet my bottles of Vin Goth, Blue Sprinkles, Rose Topping and Tiger Tiger. And why I have a drawer filled with blue, green and purple MAC shadows even though I rarely wear makeup other than my everyday neutral look.

I have to thank the lovely and generous Julia from All About The Pretty for offering to send her samples of these four new lacquers to me.

First up, the Blue Storm shades.

Whirlwind is glorious. Even more so in person. There is no way to capture this incredible shade and do it justice. If you can still find this at your local MAC counter, buy it!! Even if you don’t wear blues or greens, BUY IT!! It applies like a dream, has amazing shimmer and fire and is completely swoon-worthy.

Rainy Day is what I’d call a “great concept, poor execution”. A beautiful stormy blue-gray is right up my alley. But making it a metallic chrome instead of a shimmer like Whirlwind was a mistake in my opinion. The application and it’s finish filled with brush strokes disappointed me. This is a case where layering could save this beautious shade. I’ll have to play with some combos.

Now on to Smoke Signals.

When I first read that MAC was coming out with a black with red shimmer I thought here we go, they’re jumping on the Lubu Heels, RBL Revamp bandwagon. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong. Why Wildfire is described as having red shimmer, I’ll never know. It’s actually a plum shimmer that turns this black based polish into a sexy deep purple on the nail.

Nocturnelle is a repromote that originally debuted with the Nocturnelle collection in October 2006, right in the middle of the black polish craze. For a black creme, Nocturnelle represents well. It’s highly pigmented, glossy and smooth. But, I couldn’t in good conscience tell you to go buy Nocturnelle when there are plenty of similar black cremes in your local drugstore that look just as nice. Unless you specifically want MAC’s formula, I say skip it.
Were any of you lucky enough to snag these beauties? Which ones are your favorites?

Whirlwind is super gorgeous! Nocturnelle chipped so quickly. The other two were okay, nothing special.

    Hi,

I got Whirlwind and Wildfire. I wish I had gotten Rainy Day too though! I already have Chanel Black Satin so I didn’t grab Nocturnelle because I have black covered.

I have Wildfire on my toes as I speak and I am going to do a Whirlwind mani soon. I can;t wait to try out that color blue- it reminds me of a peacock feathers blue color.

  3. CincyFan says:

Anon – Peacock feathers is a great way of putting it. Whirlwind and Wildfire sound like a great combo.

Your blog is really informative, thanks for giving us so many swatches :) for MAC, I have Wildfire, Whirlwind and Rainy Day! And I love all their shaded! But I would have to say that wildfire is extremely sheer and the application of Rainy Day is not that great.. But Whirlwind was perfect!a v unique color which flashes green and blue and even purple!

How does Whirlwind compare to OPI Glacier Bay Blues? I have the latter and on me it flashes green, blue and purple. Are the 2 colours different enough to send me a-hunting for Whirlwind?

  6. CincyFan says:

Hi Hanneri! You know, I was really disappointed with Glacier Bay Blues (GBB). I found it to be really sheer, whirlwind is not. And GBB is much deeper in color and not nearly as pretty as Whirlwind. If it comes to South Africa, jump on it.

whirlwind is AMAZING! at first I didn’t think that it would complement my brown skin, but its a really gorgeous combination…it gives off a sexy, middle-eastern vibe…but I haven’t put it on my hands yet. It’s so pretty that I don’t want to do it any injustice with a sloppy application.

btw, i’ve had it on my toes for the past 5 days with no clear polish…and its STILL SHINY!

cincyfan, i have nocturnelle and wildfire.

i loved nocturnelle but my nails looked good for only a day and half. all that hard work for barely 48 hours of nail pleasure, boo!

i ended up giving it to a friend who slammed her finger in her car door a few months ago. her nail turned black and she can’t wear light polishes any more so i figured at least this way the rest of her nails would match her black one.

I’m the proud hoarder of 3 bottles of Whirlwind! It’s the prettiest teal polish I’ve *ever* seen. This color is more or less what I wanted GBB to be (though lighter). I was really impressed with the pigmentation of this polish (I got the color of the bottle using 1 thick coat or two really thin ones). I also found the finish to be shiny enough that you hardly needed a top coat. I also didn’t have any problems with chips or wear when I used it with my regular nail routine (Stickey & Out The Door). Everything about my experience with this polish was perfect.

I wish this shade was permanent! I’d forever be wearing it.

I got some “Whirlwind” when the collection first came out. I LOVE the color, but I have trouble getting MAC polishes to look good on my nails, maybe because I haven’t been doing my nails for very long now. I’ll keep trying; it’s looks so good in YOUR photos on your nails!
