Wear The Rainbow

“Skittles Nails” is a trend that’s been popping up on the Makeup Alley Nail Board. Partially inspired by our constant multi-colored swatching of new nail polishes and also by the Zoya Candy collection, this look is for the bold and whimsical.

I’ve seen it done on toes and I think it’s totally fun for summer. The look I’m sporting below is using 5 of the 6 Candy shades; (thumb to pinkie) Sweet, Yummy, Creamy, Tangy and Juicy.

So, what do you think? Over the top? Fun and fashion forward? The look of a psych ward patient? Let’s hear what you have to say.

  1. What Do You Think of the Rainbow Nails Trend? « Makeup.com | August 4, 2010
  1. Marina says:

In my opinion (maybe I am too old-fashioned) I don’t like the trend of multi-colored nails. I just don’t find it attractive.

  2. CincyFan says:

You’re not old fashioned, it’s just not your taste. I respect that. There were plenty of people that hated the black trend last winter, it doesn’t mean they’re out of style.

  3. Brent says:

a little like a tween trend to me …

  4. Anonymous says:

I like it as a fun, casual pedi look. In fact I’ve sported the look on my toes this summer once already. However, I’m not a fan of it as a mani.

  5. CincyFan says:

Anon – I agree, I’m more of a fan of it on toes as well. I think you can get away with bolder looks on your feet than hands. I just did a mani as an example of the look.

  6. avroys says:

I also think I like it better for a pedi. With summer coming up in the Southern hemisphere I might just try it out!

  7. Trina says:

I think it’s cute, but waaaaay too Dexter. I don’t want to be bled out and carved up by a serial killer tyvm! LOL! Seriously, though, I probably would do it if I wasn’t so lazy.

  8. Anonymous says:

Definitely a cute pedi — although I’m still not sold on yellow varnish!

  9. CincyFan says:

OMG Trina, how could I forget about Dexter? When you put it in that context, it is a creepy mani. LOL

  10. E says:

I love the colors separately, but I’m not a fan of a different one on every nail. Maybe one fun color on fingers, one fun color on toes.

  11. CarolineSwing says:

Several months ago I was doing some swatching then ran to see a new Dr. She noticed the different colors (and only on one hand) right away. She told me that when she was a girl living in India, it was very popular to paint only one hand. I was slightly less popular to paint all the nails different colors, but it was done. Something I found interesting and thought I’d share. :)

wow bright and summery. i have a yellow like that on my toes and i get compliments all of the time from guys and girls alike =) it has been fun!

  13. Kirstine says:

I frequently do variations on this kind of thing (different colours on every finger) although i tend to mix up the tones as well, and mix jewel colours with pastels and neons and metallics. It’s not something you wear if your style is very classy and clean cut, but if you’re a bit grungy and a fan of jeans it very quickly and easily ‘girlifies’ you. It’s also incredibly effective if (like me) your nails tend to be all different lengths and shapes (because of biting or damage). Single colour nail varnish tends to highlight the mismatch in your nails, whereas rainbow nails tend to camouflage it somewhat.

  14. Kimberley says:

I love the skittles mani and now its getting warmer here in the UK i am going to try it out this weekend.

  15. Sandi says:

I like to do my toes in gradient color all in one family, with the brightest on the big toe and the lightest on the little toe. It’s fun and then I stay mostly conventional (one color) on my tips.

  16. kali says:

I love the skittles look, I’ve painted my nails multi coloured since I was 15, although now I’m 21 I do get some funny looks. Doesn’t stop me from doing it though

  17. Jenn says:

I’m 14 and this seems a little “out there” I LOOOVE bright colours, but doing 5 different colours seems a little crazy. Right now, I have OPI Jade is the New Black on my nails, and OPI In My Back Pocket on my toes. mismatching mani/pedis I think is a fun toned down alternative.

  18. Rachel says:

I did this a while back–I was just trying different bright colors I had gotten and couldn’t choose which to use so was really swatching, one on each nail. It looked so terrific–I showed my 21 year old daughter over a video call and she really cheered up (she had just gotten braces the previous day and was bummed). I went out with my nails like that for 2 days and got some looks and a few comments. (I am not young–I’m 53! lol!) Anyway, it’s not an everyday look but it was so cute and really, really fun. Even this old lady could pull it off!

  19. Rachel says:

One thing I found when I did this–be consistent in your finishes. I had 2 shimmers mixed in with my cremes and I found that all cremes looked much better so went over those 2 shimmers with a coat of a like-color creme. Made all the difference in the world.

  20. SGillespie says:

I have been doing this since my thirties, I am 47 now.. I started it, and got a lot of compliments along the way.

  21. dreaming78 says:

Heck, I’m in my 30s and I love it! Of course, I really don’t care what other people think of my nail polish–I do it to make me happy. (Actually, I have nurses that see my feet every month or so, and I’m happy when they notice whatever I’ve done to my toes, but besides that.) I think that, as long as it isn’t interfering with your work life, you should do what you like and be as colorful and/or mixed as you please. :)

  22. Julia says:

I think it looks cute, but I’d personally wear it on my toes for myself and not as a manicure. But it’s perfect for summer!
