French vs. American Manicure

A reader from South Africa emailed me recently about the difference between French and American manicures.

The French manicure is thought to have been invented by Max Factor in the 1930s for the fashionistas of Paris. A french manicure consists of a white tip with a flesh toned sheer over the rest of the nail. Orly trademarked the term “Original French Manicure” when they began selling their at home french manicure kits in 1978.
The origins of the American manicure are much harder to find. Basically, the major difference between the two styles is the color of the tip. American manicures are a softer version of the traditional French, using creamier colors as opposed to a stark white. Most people consider the American manicure a more natural nail look.
Here is an example of each:
French Manicure (Barielle French Tip White & Pinnacle Sorbet Cerise)

American Manicure (Orly Naked Ivory tip, OPI Bubble Bath)

Popular french manicure tip colors: OPI Alpine Snow and Orly White Tips

Popular American manicure tip colors: OPI Swedish Nude, Kyoto Pearl (shimmer) and Desire

In addition to the two most popular styles, alternatives to the french manicure are becoming very popular. Termed a “funky french” or “reverse french” these new versions are fresh and fun.

Sephora showed a reverse french, with black tips on their spring catalog cover.
Use a glittery, metallic or holographic polish on your tips for a blingtastic funky french. Tip color: OPI Paris Couture for Sure.

Finally, my lame attempt at a 4th of July funky french from last summer. Inspired by one of the MUA nail board gals, I decided to go for it with lots of color and glitter. I used China Glaze Hot Lava Love, OPI Paris Couture For Sure and China Glaze Dorothy Who?.

Helpful hints for “tipped” manicures:

Apply the base, nail bed, color first.

Hold the tip color brush steady and roll your fingertip underneath to get a smooth and even line.

Try using the Sally Hansen French Manicure Pen Kit if you can’t get your polish even.

NOTD – China Glaze Yell-O-Neil

It’s a really good thing I work in an environment that allows me wear crazy colors. Let’s here it for working with family. Crazy nail colors are one of the perks. So today I’m wearing Yell-O-Neil from the China Glaze Surf Summer collection. I still can’t believe I’m wearing yellow… on my nails. I’ve gotten puzzled looks and avoiding glances all day. And then there’s my dad who says, “My nails looked like that on Sunday after working in the yard but, I didn’t do it on purpose.”

So ok, I never thought I’d love a yellow. I certainly never thought I’d own two. Yet I am so drawn to them at the moment. Maybe it’s the tease of spring/summer I got this past weekend while doing some wine tasting in Amish country. I know the whole wine in Amish country thing sounds odd but it’s oh so right and intoxicating. Anywho, I saw this crazy glassy yellow from China Glaze and I haven’t been able to stop staring at it. It literally has been sitting on my desk since it arrived. And it’s not just me. The gals on the Makeup Alley nail board are drawn to it as well. So, what’s going on? Are we just so sick of the typical spring colors that we’re fiending for something new? Any theories?

Go Fish – Fish Therapy

So I’m watching Ugly Betty on Sunday on my DVR and what do I see? Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) soaking her feet in flesh eating fish to make them smooth as a baby’s bottom. I was shocked, disgusted and intrigued all at the same time. My first thought was, “yeah right!” But, knowing that some of the craziest stories on television are based in reality I decided to do a little sleuthing.

Lo and behold, this is an actual treatment in Japan. They call the little guys Doctor Fish (actual name garru-rufa) and they feast on dead skin. They don’t have any teeth just a suction cup type mouth that removes the skin, leaving it glowing and smooth. The sensation has been described as tingly or ticklish. Oh and it’s not just for the feet. If you’re brave enough, you can immerse yourself for a whole body exfoliation.

This therapy is not just for the extreme pedicure lover. Imported from Turkey, the fish are used in some Middle Eastern countries as a natural way to treat rheumatism and psoriasis.
For more info and some great video, check out this piece from Orlando’s Local 6 News.
Also, I found this bit on YouTube. It’s in Japanese but the video is great.
