NOTD – Essie Breezy Beach
Essie Breezy Beach is the shade I chose as my “dare” polish and I am SO not a fan. It looks craptastic on me and anyone that tells me differently, I won’t believe ‘em. Ha ha
I’d like to say that it’s because I’m not used to seeing my nails this way but it’s not. I feel like my nails look dirty or stained. The slight iridescence in Breezy Beach doesn’t make it any prettier in person.
Well, I tried and I can’t wait to get this stuff off. Sheers are obviously NOT my friend.
I’d love to hear your comments. Maybe it was just this particular shade. If you have a suggestion for something better, I’m all ears. I may even wear it.
Creative Optix Collection
*inserts foot in mouth* Alright, I was wrong, the new Creative collection isn’t a redux of Spring 2006. I know that no company would be stupid enough to do that. Give me a little slack though, the pics I saw online weren’t that great. And, seeing them on a nail display makes a HUGE difference.
I Dare You
Recently on the Makeup Alley Nail Board there was a fun thread where everyone posted their screen names and the other members “dared” us to try colors we don’t normally wear. A couple gals commented that I wear everything so it’s hard to pick. That’s pretty much true with the exception of sheer and white polishes. The colors suggested to me were China Glaze Tie The Knot (pictured), a white creme, neon pink, bright blue (e.g. Essie Aruba Blue) and metallic black.
The first two are definitely something I haven’t worn before so I’m going outside my comfort zone and painting my nails in a sheer tonight and then an opaque white or cream colored polish later this week. Even though my nails are all wrecked from cleaning up my newly redecorated living room, I’m dreading the idea of removing my vampy mani to put on a sheer. I have very detached nails so the length of my whites, even when short, make my nails look fake. Even so, I’m going to give sheers a chance.
So everyone, I now dare you to try something different and new and not very “you.” What color will people think is totally unexpected to see on your nails? Or what color are you afraid to try?
Helen Mirren
My pal, DramaQueenie2, brought this fantastic picture of Helen Mirren to my attention. Commenting that, “the black nail polish trend isn’t just for young starlets.” It’s actually freaky that I was thinking something similar as I watched the great Dame on the red carpet at the SAG Awards last night.
From what I’ve seen, women of a certain age tend to keep their nails very neutral. Sheers, pales or clean and buffed. It’s a tasteful look but I don’t think you should have to give up color as you age. I certainly don’t plan to. I understand giving up glittery makeup, bright in-your-face eyeshadow, mini skirts and belly baring tops at some point but, ladies, you can still have some fun with your look. You don’t have to go from 20 to grandma in one fell swoop. I’m not talking crazy blues and greens like your’s truly, just a nice red creme, a shimmery pink, a gorgeous espresso.
It’s refreshing to see someone like Helen Mirren, with her red lips and vampy nails. I can only hope to look that stunning at her age. She is elegant, regal and beautiful. Here are a few of my favorite nail moments from Ms. Mirren. Isn’t she radiant? I’d love to know her beauty secrets. If anyone has read an article about her skincare regime, please share with the group.
NOTD – Nicole Paparazzi Plum
I love going to see my nail tech. She has this amazing wall of discontinued polish from Nicole, OPI and Creative. It’s a total treasure trove. It’s where I found my bottle of OPI Rainforest. There is this one Creative polish that I lust after. It’s called Amazon and it’s a stunning emerald green. Some day it will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
I went to see her the other night and found this beauty on the wall. Nicole Paparazzi Plum is deep deep plum with subtle shimmer. I compared it to my swatch of OPI Lincoln Park At Midnight and they are very very close. So close that you don’t need to hunt this one down or pay crazy eBay prices for it.
I really enjoy doing my own nails and taking the time to do them well but there’s something so relaxing about getting a manicure. I’m not gonna lie, when I do my nails, it takes me a while. It has taken me quite some time to get over my clumsiness and improve my polish application. So, watching a pro is fun for me. Every time I see her, I pick up some new. Either how much polish she leaves on the brush or exactly where on the nail she starts applying. Every little bit helps make me better.
So kids, what’s on your nails today?
